Editorial Reviews:

Amazon.co.uk Review
Just as some actors never made the jump from the silent screen to talkies, so too Sonic the Hedgehog has never really seemed at home in 3-D. Sonic Heroes, though, is the best attempt yet to simulate the fast, uncomplicated thrills of the 2-D Mega Drive days on this generation's shiny new consoles.

Sonic Heroes is basically the action segments from Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 stripped of all the insanely dull pseudo RPG elements but unfortunately still containing far too much storyline and the largest and least interesting host of secondary characters ever seen in gaming. Sonic Heroes also inherits many of the older titles' camera and control problems, although here they are now occasional rather than constant irritations.

All this may seem as if it's painting a rather poor picture of the game, but despite all its problems Sonic Heroes is actually a lot of fun. Its main gimmick is that you actually control three characters at a time, with each one having a special ability of either speed, flight or the ability to smash through blocks. Thankfully this doesn't overcomplicate the controls and instead adds a modicum of depth to the otherwise non-stop running-'n'-jumping action.

You still occasionally get the feeling that the game is trying too hard to fit a round peg in a square hole, but on balance more of it works than doesn't, and it's certainly the best Sonic title since the Mega Drive era. --David Jenkins

1 out of 5 stars Sonic heroes   December 20, 2005

This game has dated graphics, and there isn't much freedom. It may be fast but that isn't a good thing as it is basaically the game controlling itself, you would be better off watching a film. Storyline? There is'nt one! And all levels are as boring and frustrating as hell, don't waste money on this, it is'nt worth it.

5 out of 5 stars not worth it.   July 9, 2004

I haven't actually bought the game, and in some ways I'm glad, it's a half-decent effort but to me it wasn't worth the download (tut tut), which took me 12 hours to do with a broadband connection. This features all the usual characters however you have to switch between one and the other to do various tasks which are needed to complete the frankly labyrinth styled levels. My Xbox doesn't quite look like other Xboxers and this game has given me the pleasure of testing my chipped Xbox to see what results I could got, the game ran but my disappointment at the quality of this game made me unsolder the xbox chip and put the Xbox parts back together and neatly assemble them into the bin.
PS don't download this game, it's not worth it.

3 out of 5 stars half genius half flawed   July 7, 2004

after sonic adventure 1 and 2 on dreamcast and later nintendo gamecube sonic makes his multi-platform debut in a all new 3d adventure. This time round the rules have changed and in order to compleate zones you will need to work in a team of 3.One will be fast one will be powerfull and the other will have flying abilitys(sonic, knuckles and tales)and individual skills must be used to progress in the level for instance there might be a high ledge so you swap your charicter to tales and fly the team up to the ledge.
The level design is quite good, very large bright levels that last for at least 10 mineuts each will keep you accupied and the graphics are great this is defently the best looking sonic game ever and the music(although cheesy)is good.so what is wrong with sonic heros?well...
1.special stages-in order to access the special stages you need to find a hidden key with in the act, usally the key is about half way through the level but after finding the key you cant get hit by a enimy or you loose the key so this leaves at least 5 mineuts of running around a level with out getting hit and this is very very hard to do,why cant they go back to the finnish the act with 50 rings?
2.grinding-grinding rails playes a big part in sonic heros in quite a few sections there will be 4 or 5 rails running side by side and you will need to jump from rail to rail in order to avoid spikes etc, but this is where the problem is in order to jump rail you need to jump and press left or right at the same time when it works its great but you know any mineut now he will jump out of control, the camera will go mental and you will fall to your death and have to start a 10 mineut level all over again all because the game has not been programed properly.
3.dr robotnik aka dr eggman-to say the end of level bosses are a dissapointment in a understatement i atchally think they are discracefull.after some levels you will have to fight dr robotnik's plain all you need to do is keep pressing the jump button and he will die!!NOT ONLY THAT BUT IT ALSO LOOKS CRAP TOO,then in some levels you will be on a platform and have to fight loads of enimys with no clue to how many enimys there are left not only is this lazy it is tedious.where is all the cleverly designed sonic killing machines we saw in the megadrive and gameboy advance games? you know the ones that equired tacktics to win and diddnt rely on luck.
4.the homing attack-in sonic heros there is a homing attack,(with sonic)you press jump then press it again and you should attack the nearest enimy unforchantly a lot of the time is just dosent work, you may be on a platform with the end in sight then press jump twice for the homing attack but then oh..he dose not home in on the enimy...he flys off the edge and falls to his deathmaking you start the level again,at about this time you controll pad takes a dive and breaks at it hits the wall.
these are the main faults with the game and if you can work around these problems you will find a great game but trust me one mineut you will be thinking it is genius then the next you will swear to never play in again.i think this is a worthy purchase for sonic fans or people who over look faults in games(so just about anyone who brought driver 3 then).
if you must buy a sonic game i would recomend the awsome sonic mega collection on gamecube or the wicked sonic advance games on gameboy.
overall moments of genius but many flaws.

Only even consider buying this game if your a child.
Old Sonic fans steer clear. The only thing thing that Sonic has going for it is that it is in 3D.
The gameplay is now boring and predictable instead of fun and addictive.
The way the controls are lead out makes it difficult for a child to play (who are the ONLY market for this game)
All in all this game has rubbish graphics, slow gameplay and
TOO MANY LEVELS!

5 out of 5 stars The Best 3D Sonic Game   April 20, 2004

The 'Blue Blur' is back! But he is not alone this time! All of your favourite Sonic characters are back in one of his most revelutionary title ever!
I am a great Sonic fan and have waited for this title for a long time (after playing Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 who would'nt). Dr. Eggman is up to his old tricks again as he sends a message to the 'Sonic Heroes' (which cnsists of Sonic, Tails and Knuckles) challenging them to save the world once again (will he ever learn!). So ,as usual, Sonic accepts his invitation (whilst in a brilliant CG graphical scene by the way) and speeds off into the distance. This is where the player comes in, you can control all of the three characters to make use of their unique abilities, Sonic=Speed (Line up straight behind Sonic)
Tails=Flight (Tails carries them both in a vertical formation)
Knuckles=Power (Line up side by side with Knuckles in the middle)
This revelutionises the way we play. Using the abilities, you overcome certain obsticals. In addition to this there are 3 other teams to choose from, Team Rose, Dark and Chaotix. Each providing different types of gameplay.
With an amazing soundtrack ,equily amazing graphics and storyline reuniting many a forgotten Sonic character, this is definately the best 3D Sonic game!
