This game is great! I liked the previous doom games but i was never a huge fanatic, but this game blows you away. The graphics for the xbox are stunning, the sound is spot on, the gore is set on high and if your into your barbie games like the other reviewers that complain its too dark then this game isnt for you!You take control of a marine stranded in a base on mars. Your first job is to investigate a scientist that has hidden away from the rest of the team but when you get there a gateway to hell has just been opened up and everyone bar a few people have turned into zombie mutated freaks hell bent on killing you. Starting with a flashlight and a pistol its your job to blow these monsters away and survive to find out what had happened.
There are weapons aplenty ranging from the chainsaws which you can hear ripping apart bones to the plasma guns which will quickly get rid of those unwanted monsters in a flash. Talking of monsters, there a few familiar faces there from doom 1 and 2 but this time they are even more harder to kill and even more scary.
You also start with a pda and you can find other peoples that will upgrade your security clearance to open doors and such. I like the pda as it gives you a welcome breather from the madness that is doom3 but what i didnt like was the system behind it that meant that the game is very much straight forward and you cant really get lost anywhere.
Overall the game is very slick, the gameplay is frantic and the graphics are lovely. There are a few little touches that makes this game stand out above a lot of other fps' (like when you blow a monster away with a shotgun, you can see the blood splatters on the wall where you killed him). The only disappoinments for me where that there is no splitscreen coop mode apart from on xbox live which i have played and it is really good but having to play over live takes away part of the fun.
The other xbox live options arent really that good but if you were into quake online and such, im sure you'll get more enjoyment out of it than i did.
The interviews and game pieces about doom3 are interesting but they dont last long and you wouldnt really watch them more than once.
Doom1 and Doom2 are also included on the limited edition and they are fantastic, over 30 levels for both of them and with the addition of playing multiplayer coop and deathmatch on them they are well worth the extra tenner alone. Its retro come back to haunt you!
