In a nutshell:

Pro Evolution 5's gameplay has been enhanced to provide a more lifelike version of the beautiful game: players utilise their upper bodies more in the challenge, have more tricks at their disposal, and can now curl shots with pinpoint accuracy. I'm not a serious gamer, I don't really have the TIME to be a serious gamer, not enough time to master every single control technique. I like to be able to pick up the controller and have a decent game of football.
PES 5 is a really fun game, but I get the feeling it could have been so much better. Its great fun to play, looks great and flows along at a good pace. Its also great fun with two players but its a different story against the AI.
Long balls don't work, neither do through balls, the opposition has a sixth sense that tells them exaclty where the ball will go. Its impossible to score from free kicks, nearly all my shots seem to be blocked by the defender and why is it that every tackle results in a free kick to the opposition?
The biggest downfall of football games, I find, is that they are either too easy or too difficult. Playing on the easiest setting I can score ten against Arsenal, but by putting it on a higher setting, I am outplayed by teams I've never even heard of, with all the opposition players suddenly transforming into players of Zidane like quality! How many times can a player just waltz through my defence shaking off a dozen tackles before hammering home a shot from 25 yards.
I am also positive that the statistics of players don't actually make a difference. Top class players like Rooney and Gerrard have no first touch, can't pass a ball and lose the ball as soon as the first half hearted tackle comes in.

The most frustrating thing about this game is realising what it could have been. At its best it is fast, tatical, intelligent football. However, this isn't often realised because of some frustrating technical design faults. Some of these include:
- Passing. Dreadful AI. Even being a top class team like Brasil doesn't seem to affect your players passing. 9 times out of 10 your players will pass to anything other than the player you want them to - even when the joypad is pressed in the right direction. Long through balls are also a waste of time - your players will either pass it straight to the defender or too long so it is easily picked up by the keeper.
- Refereeing decisions. Every other play is a foul, and 9 times out of 10 it will be your player penalised. This makes the game a frustrating stop/start affair. And offsides! Every other attack was offside. It just becomes frustrating and boring when long build ups are marred by your player getting offside at almost every opportunity.
- control system. Was this devised by a monkey? How many times have my defenders failed to tackle a forward because the computer was switching control between 3 different players? How many times have my attacks come to nothing because the player I pass to is not the one that the computer has selected? And how many times will I spend cycling through different players to find the one that I want, only for the computer to override this in favour of a player I don't want?
It is a step-up from PE4 - but only marginally. It is as if Konami have taken all the elements away from the series that made it fun - fast passing, tatical build-ups, fantastic but realistic scoring - and made all the irritating aspects more prominent. It is true (as some reviewers have said) that perseverence brings its rewards. But at what price? Is it really worth spending hours trying to master a system that is so flawed? Even when you have begun to play some nice football it is all let-down by the crazy AI and referreeing. Unfortunately, no amount of game-play can make up for some pretty glaring design errors.

Now, I am a fussy man. I do not lie for kicks, I do not speak for anyone else. So believe me when I say this is the best game in the world. Ever.
The football gaming days started for me in 2000, with Fifa 2000. That was amazing beyond words. But I am older and wiser, so I can now speak, but when it's about this beautiful piece of art I am still lost. The sheer scale and accessability of the game may make your jaw drop; it did for me.
Now, look closely and this may look like another Japanese bit of tat. Fair enough, this is Japanese (not that I have anything against Japanese people) and there are only two English licensed teams (Arsenal, Chelsea) but when the gameplay is this good it just doesn't matter.
Within minutes you'll be hooked. Master League mode just has to be translated into being called drugs; it's that good. Instead of looking at the slightly shabbily recreated kits you will be devising your own tactics. Trust me, it's easy and fun.
The presentation is below that of FIFA 06, but you can cope. Actually, you can live on it.
They really should make rehab for this.

Look, the very best football game I have ever played. brilliant sport sim. When you have a group of friends around palying what a hoot.
BUT, play the computer and it's boring. Even on 5 stars and not touching the controls the a.I runbs around like a headless chicken and hardly ever scores.....I switch it off after a few games every time. I want to see Wayne Rooney power through my CD and fire in a 25 yard shot. Or Henry out pace my whole defence and roll it in the bottom corner..but never does this happen.
2 players..BRILLIANT
1 player V the A.I. rubbish.

I have to say i have been a great fan of this series since iss pro come out on the ps1 BUT they seem to be getting worse.I have had this game for some time now and it is just boring.I cannot understand how konami can start with something so good and manage to make it worse with each new addition .The gameplay is boring the goals you score are boring (all seem to be the same) the amount of freekicks you give away is ridiculous and there is no point getting a freekick because it is impossible to score from them. The game play is constantly been broken up by the ball somehow going out of play or a player falling over and winning a freekick.I say bring back the old ones this is not worth the money unless you are a chelsea or arsenal fan(these teams have real kits).Please konami get it right next time as i dont want to get on fifa bandwagon.(although maybe i should!!!!!)
