Amazon.co.uk Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, is a next-gen experience complete with top-of-the-line graphics and surround sound designed for the Sony PlayStation 3. Featuring the most revealing display of Kojima Production's premier title, MSG4 details the world where Snake must under go his final mission. In a world overrun by private military companies (PMCs), wars are no longer fought over nations or ideologies. Instead, the wars of the future are micro-managed by overarching PMCs, right down to the bullet. New gadgets and abilities fuel Snake's journey deep into the enemy domains of the Middle East, South America, and beyond. New gear includes "Metal Gear Mk. II," the ultimate reconnaissance tool, and "Solid Eye," which gives Snake real-time information on enemies and his surroundings.

PMCs have run amok and the world is at war. View larger. |
Octacamo will help Snake blend into surroundings. View larger. | Joined by a familiar cast of characters, Snake must once again return to the battlefield to confront his lifelong rival, Liquid Ocelot, who is manipulating the world's wars from the one world where soldiers will always have a place. But Liquid Ocelot is not the only one who will be able to manipulate the world's wars--Snake can destabilize opposing forces by working behind the scenes, supporting the local militia as they fight PMCs, creating a smokescreen that allows Snake to move freely within the war-zone. MGS4 is a next-generation adventure set in the aftermath of MGS2: Sons of Liberty. The concept behind the latest Metal Gear Solid project is "no place to hide," and this edition in the series will force Snake into unexpected circumstances with an all-new storyline that breaks away in some ways from the previous MGS franchise entries. We don't want to spoil it for you, but, producer Hideo Kojima did reveal some very juicy bits about the game and the storyline when it was first announced at E3 of 2006. "Until now," said Kojima, "we've released two entries of the MSX2 Metal Gear series, and three entries in the Metal Gear Solid series. Add to this Portable Ops, and you get a total of six titles. All mysteries will be cleared up in Metal Gear Solid 4." Kojima was very clear about the finality of MSG4, leaving gamers to wonder, "Will Snake die?!" When asked if the story will come to this sort of an end, Kojima responded without the slightest bit of vagueness, "It will come to an end." The MGS4 E3 trailer showed a number of characters from the Metal Gear and Metal Gear Solid histories. This final instalment is sure to deliver loads of cameos, in fact, it is rumoured that nearly all the characters from the series will make an appearance. In addition to a return of classic Metal Gear Solid characters, the gameplay systems from part three are also expected to make a comeback. The camouflage system from part three will make it into MGS4, with the addition of "OctoCamo," Snake's most advanced stealth suit to date. The name appears to be formed from the words "Octopus" and "camouflage," and players will be awestruck by the chameleon-like camo that changes with the surroundings. OctoCamo allows Snake to blend in with his environment as it digitally manifests nearby textures in real time. Think if it this way, if Snake is standing next to a wall worn out with holes, he too will appear to be riddled with holes. It has also been revealed that MGS4 will have online play, but no specifics have been released. Although very little information is known about the game's visuals, rumour has it that MGS4 is expected to be the finest representation of console graphics on the PS3, and it is expected that they will just get better and better as the game nears its release date.

Not a Combat Game July 7, 2008 JoyDivision (UK) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
Metal Gear Solid 4 is a brilliantly engineered and very engaging game, but only if played in the right way. Much like Splinter Cell or Hitman the game revolves around stealth and while it is very tempting to go on a rampage after discovery by an enemy if you do so the fun of the game quickly evaporates, while it is possible to bring your large arsenal of weaponry to bear on the enemy the game becomes incredibly unrealistic and faults in the enemy AI begin to show through. That's not to say you can't take the odd sniper shot at an enemy sentry to ease your way through but I strongly discourage playing this game simply as a shoot em up. The cut scenes in the game are, as noted before, verging on the ridiculous. I especially remember the scene in which you encounter your friendly neighborhood arms dealer which in some games might be dealt with without even any break in gameplay lasting 15-20 minutes, while the storyline is engaging I feel that more gameplay could be integrated with very little loss to depth of story. In conclusion I would recommend this game to any fan of the stealth genre and of course to any of the die hard Metal Gear fans to whom no protestation could avail. However if you're expecting the ability to engage in realistic combat, as some other reviewers have suggested, you'll be disappointed.
Not so much a game but more a movie July 7, 2008 B. Kermode (isle of man) 2 out of 5 found this review helpful
I don't get how all these people can call this the best game ever? Yes it has got great graphics and as good as the gameplay is it's nothing amazing. I love the mgs series but the cut scenes on this are far too long, plus you have to install the game after every chapter! You'll find yourself watching this game more than playing it. I know for a fact i will be getting rid of this before i complete it as it is so frustrating just siting there watching a game. COD4 is still the best game around at the moment, no question. This game has badly let me down after looking forward to it for so long
Enjoying it... July 7, 2008 Emsworth Hermit (Hants) 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
I'll keep it brief as there's enough waffle in these reveiws already. I've been playing for a week now (not constantly) and it's proving to be everything i'd expected. A "must" for all MGS fans, not that there can be many left that don't have it now, i was probably one of the last... 2 minor criticisms; the mission briefings being way too long, and the weapon availability in the form of Drebin's store. It's basically an unlimited ammo scenario and detracts from the player having to use a bit more skill and judgement with their choice of firepower. I think i'm currently "carrying" at least 30 different weapons, which call me picky, just seems silly. That said I don't begrudge a penny of what I spent on the game.
A final farewell for the mind blowing series July 5, 2008 K. Vohora 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
First off as a ps3 exclusive you really cant go wrong anyway. Having finished the game Id just like to say that if you are having any doubts about buying this game you should get rid of them right now! Graphics 5 star game play 5 star You really cant fault it. The landscape is breathtaking and the game play is and the gameplay is amazing what with the octocamo for stealth purposes as well as the close quarters combat. I did finish fairly quickly in a week but you can keep replaying as their different routes and hidden objects to find, the items you recover first time around also roll over to the next time. The cut scenes can at times drag on but if you are following the story they tie up all the loose ends. I havent played much of the online but from what i have and the exandability with new maps, weapons etc. I can say it will provide entertainment for a long time. All in all an amazing game that is definetly a must buy to play as snake for the last time!
An awesome acheivement... July 4, 2008 RDL (Staffordshire, UK) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Where do I begin reviewing a game that simply smashes all expectations and rewards you with a truly brilliant experience? I recall playing Metal Gear Solid all those years ago on my Playstation 1. Being a school boy at the time, it became the sole reason to skip on homework and only leave my room for meals. This game sparked my devotion to the MGS series and I have been hooked ever since. Once completing the games I can only describe my emotions as `wow...what a ride.' And I never thought it could possibly get any better than MG3 Snake Eater. Until now... Like other reviewers, it is difficult to go into detail about MGS4 without spoiling some aspect of the game. Firstly, the visuals are simply stunning. You will never see anything so visually beautiful. They refer to Hideo Kojima as `the Steven Spielberg' of games, a reputation that has definitely been exceeded and lived up to. The game is like one big movie, a movie that you, as the gamer are directly involved in shaping as you play through it. Every bit of this game really does ooze quality. The negative reviews are born from people who have played MGS here and there, not really appreciating its full story and ending to this truly epic masterpiece. Hideo, we salute you.
