4 out of 5 stars Good space sim. How budget software should be sold.   October 9, 2008
Mr. A. M. HOGG (London, UK)
This is a "final" release that comes with more than the original release. Also included are patches and updates (including stuff originally from the gaming community). The game itself will run well on almost any current system since it predates current cutting edge specs.

Some may take issue with a fairly steep learning curve, and maybe the game is spread too thin trying to cover too many different angles. Story. Space combat. Trading. "Building". Resources. Multiple ships. Controlling "wingmen". And more.

There's a lot to this game, and it won't appeal to everyone. Things have moved on a long way since Elite. May favourite spacers since then are still Privateer 2, Tachyon: Beyond the Fringe, and the Wing Commander series. But this is still a game with much to offer that is extremely good value.

How budget games should be sold.

2 out of 5 stars X2 let down by naff storyline & non-space graphics   August 12, 2008
Mr. J. D. Robinson (England)
I was looking forward to X2, having already enjoyed playing X-Beyond the Frontier, X-Tension / X-Gold.

Unfortunately I felt X2 was a bit of a disappointment, being too focused on a storyline which features banal conversations with characters formed from amateurish graphics (when compared to the stunning graphics of the space scenes). I preferred the previous X games where you were pretty much left to trade, fight, build and discover the x universe on your own.

That said, I am buying X3 in the hope there is some improvement, and because I am still hooked on the X games!

3 out of 5 stars Good game, bad support   April 27, 2007

I own this game and the original X.

The games themselves are good, but with some serious flaws and bugs.
In the first one, they worked on the bugs... then instead released a new version, letting their customers down.

Then I bought this one. Again, some serious bugs. user on their website were told 'we work on it, trust us'.
And guess what? what should have been fixes actually came as the new version, X3.

If you do not mind disposable games, get the 3 by all means, and play them in sequence to get the full storyline. But do not waste time on industrial development.

If, on the other hand, you do not like the feeling of being ripped off by a company who cannot be bothered to really support existing versions, just take a wide berth.

4 out of 5 stars Freedom!!   March 27, 2006

X2 is the only PC space trading game I have ever played, though this will soon be remedied as i order X3. The Game gives Complete freedom to, in the wOrds of the slogan 'TRADE, FIGHT, BUILD, THINK'. While most people can't be bothered to think to much, the trading, fighting and building is a lot of fun.

Fighting is the element that will appeal to most people, and is probably the most fun as well, though you'll never get to fight anything fun, unless your a half decent trader.

X2 gives you freedom to buy and control your own fleet of ships, be they cargo ships, traders, fighters, or monstrous Destroyers. You will have to start the game as a trader, playing through the tutorial like early missions, but as soon as you've built up some cash to buy a decent ship, and possibly some decent weapons, you have al the freedom of the universe.

Though the storyline itself is dissapointingly short, you can always keep yourself ammused by hunting some pirates, smuggling illict goods, or trading with other species.

The egosoft website provides a wealth of updates, downloadedale plugins and modifications to the game that make for greatly enhanced gameplay.

In all a well rounded game, but you'll need to keep an eye on your profit margins before the fun really begins.

Having played both X- Beyond the frontier and X-Tension this is the leap the game needed. It offers refreshing Graphics and better control than ever before. Theres just more of everything that the first two games fell short of. This game had me hooked for weeks. The freedom of movment and improved menues are a welcome, while still in keeping with the original games. I give this a big thumbs up and would recomend to any stratagey or sim fan a like. Cant wait for X3 it should be amazing if there track record, so far, is to go by.
