2 out of 5 stars Nothing special   April 18, 2003

I bought this game mainly due to it's low price and the reviews here, which generally say that it is a good game...however, after playing the game for less than a week, it had already started to gather dust.
The problem with this game is, it's boring. Nearly every missin involves collecting something and taking it somewhere. The levels are huge, and the graphics are decent, but there's too little going on in them. For instance, one missin briefing says avoid the traffic. What traffic are they referring to though? The odd truck here and there, great!
To describe this game as Grand Theft Auto in the countryside, could be justifiable, as the game is similar, as you drive round at top speeds hitting the occasional sheep and other things, but there just isn't enough to do, and I got bored very quickly.
There are a couple of different game modes - the aforemented missins are not particularly interesting.
Joyriding will interest you for about 10 minutes at most, and the checkpoint races are basic to say the least.
Multiplayer modes could provide some fun, but again, the game is very limited.
To sum up : An average game with little long lasting appeal.

4 out of 5 stars Very good, for the money!   March 15, 2003

To start with, the cars have good graphic detail and there is quite a variety, from heavy 'grenadiers' to small 'atv' quad bikes, yet these are limited as there are only around 12 to choose from. The weapons are quite good, yet each car only has 2 weapons that have limited amount (around 5), so joy ridin' is pretty boring. The terrain detail is decent yet very boring after a while, since it is practically just repeated all the way to the end of the map.
So, overall, a good graphically detailed game, with really fun cars and weapons, and lots of modes (yet some are rubbish, including joy ridin') that will keep you occupied for a long time!

At this price; for the gamecube you really cannot go wrong.

A superb unbeatable price for a good game. The game has a huge map for you to explore in various different modes of games. Up to 4 players can play in a selction of 5 or 6 multiplayer games! The detail in the game is great and there is a huge amount of landscape on the horizon; with virtually no pop-up.

The car models are detailed and the damage is fun to see - watching your doors and armour being ripped off when you get attacked or go too fast over a jump. The game is intense; fast fun and there are many extras for you to enjoy and unlock. The selction of vehicles is nice - choosing your favourite car with it's countermeasures - it really is fun and will make you come back to complete it. Countermeasures are similar to weapons - where you have bomb; cloaks; smoke screen etc. I am sure you or your child will enjoy it.

The game is compulsive and you'll probably want to unlock the North America map...

The first thing that hits you about this game is the presentation - the intro and menus are all great and give a nice atmosphere before you've even hit start. The game itself (especially in the free-roaming Joyride mode) is good looking - the distance you can see is spectacular, and you can actually drive to any point you can see which is real nice. The levels aren't infinite though, and eventually you'll come to a cliff or glacier to stop progress. But the levels are impressively big, anyway. They are also a bit brown...or boring, at a push. Maybe I've been playing super-colourful Mario too long.
Some of the cars feel a bit slow to use, but there is a good selection of light and heavy vehicles and the physics of them as you bounce around the off-road environments is top notch.
The problems start when you start the Smuggler (or story) mode. This is the main single player game and it eases you in nicely with some training missions. When completed you unlock a new car. All good so far. But when you come up against some computer controlled opponents you realise that they are that most heinous of computer game enemies - The Flawless Baddie. They are so unbelievably rock hard it just feels unfair. And then you realise that the difficulty has been put through the roof to cover the fact that all the missions from the word go are very similar - to the point of being the same. There are only so many times you can collect package A and take it to point B via enemies C. The programmers have made an attempt to spice things up with the inclusion of Countermeasures - or "weapons" to you and me - but these generally are fairly useless...blow yourself up with a bomb, sir?
So - A nicely produced game, if a bit of a one-trick pony. If driving fast and collecting stuff while avoiding other stuff in nice, large (if slightly boring)environments floats your boat, you'll love it.
