Amazon.co.uk Preview
Over the many years since its initial release the Pokemon series has slowly evolved into one of the most expansive and in-depth role-playing games available on any format. Pokemon Emerald is a sort of director's cut of Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire, in much the same way that Pokemon Crystal relates to Pokemon Gold and Silver or Pokemon Yellow to Pokemon Red and Blue.

Although the storyline is similar to Ruby and Sapphire its focus is on the legendary pokemon Rayquaza, rather than Kyogre and Groudon. Not only does this alter the storyline in several important places but it also changes where and how often you can catch certain pokemon. Some of the trainers have moved around as well and there are also new battle animations for all the pokemon when they fight.

The most important new feature is the Battle Frontier and the seven Frontier Brain competitors. This is for real pokemon experts and takes the form of a seven different tournaments against some especially powerful pokemon. The reward is some additional badges that further increase your powers as a trainer.

Unlike Ruby and Sapphire the game is also compatible with the Game Boy Advance wireless adaptor, which makes it easier to battle and trade and also gives you access to the Union chat room, for you to fill with real pokefans. With many other smaller additions and tweaks, such as a National Pokedex that includes listing for every Pokemon in existence, this is just the thing for pokemon obsessives of all ages. -- Harrison Dent

This preview is based on an incomplete version of the game; features or problems mentioned above may not appear in the finished game.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant!   January 24, 2008
Master Eg Mitchell (England)
When this game came out i didn't think it would be any different to the previous version, Ruby and Sapphire, but i soon found that it was a serious improvement on them and that the new features, like a battle tower, complete what was already a great game and this is why i would recommend it to anyone. Buy it now!

I do truly believ that this is the best pokemon game so far.
I dont no why, i have played the others but this is my favourite!!!
None of them give me as much enjoyment and have made me search information on the pokemon in the game before but this has!

I love this game!
Good Buy!

5 out of 5 stars Sounds like R.P. McMurphy bought a fake...   June 20, 2007

Pokemon Emerald ROCKS! It's got pretty much everything that a Pokemon game should have...

I'm not here to write a review though, but to say that if you buy this game and the clock does not work (ie, you set it, wait 5 minutes and check to see if it's keeping time), then it is very probably a fake! I have two fake copies of this game- a grey cartridge fake from Korea, and a greeen cartridge one that came (via ebay)from Manchester today (oddly, with a GENUINE copy of Sapphire), which I'm in the process of trying to return to the seller(they are VERY common on ebay, and some of the ads for used ones on Amazon look like people are trying to sell fakes- there are a LOT about-Pokemon is worth BILLIONS of $!) The cartridge should have its own battery powered clock in, so either the battery needs replacing, or there's no clock on the cartridge because it's stolen code on a flash cart(or similar). If the cartridge isn't transparent dark green then it's a fake- if the cartridge is green but the clock doesn't work, and the Nintendo seal on the label isn't metallic gold, and if the writing on the seal is blurry, not sharp, and the label is not on the cartridge straight, then it's a fake- usually these will be masquerading as the USA version (oval Nintendo Seal, code AGB-BPEE-USA).
If someone advertising a used one mentions the box will be sent flat packed, then it's come straight from the printers. Genuine Nintendo games have card inserts in the box to hold the cartridge, and LOTS of documentation- the Trainers guide should be a thick booklet, not just 6 or 8 pages. People selling used games DO lose instructions, yes, but the box should then at least have an insert...

For anyone playing Pokemon Diamond and/or Pearl on the DS, if you try to use a fake GBA Pokemon cartridge in the GBA slot to migrate pokemon to Diamond or Pearl(assuming you've beaten the Elite Four, have the National Dex and access to the PalPark) then the option to migrate pokemon will not appear on the D/P start menu, and your saved game on the GBA cartridge will become corrupted and be erased the next time you play the GBA game! That's exactly what happened to me after playing for about 70 hours on my fake copy of LeafGreen. I'm looking for genuine copies of all the GBA Pokemon games now... and it can be very hard to find them if you don't want to spend too much money!
Please take care not to get fooled, and if you DO, then demand a refund, and report sellers of fake merchandise to the auction/shop site!!

3 out of 5 stars Good game but with some flaws   June 6, 2007

I've only given this game three stars as although it's good, there are some things that are just not as good as in other Pokemon games.
I don't know if anyone else has had this problem, but the time doesn't pass properly, so I was only able to pick berries once, then plant them, but they never grew. It meant that other parts of the game weren't possible to do either.
I had this problem with my first cartridge, then tried another, but still had the same difficulty.
The animation of the different creatures when you meet them are good and add a bit of interest (as in Crystal), there are some good new Pokemon but it's a shame that there are not many of the Pokemon from previous versions in this one.
The two-on-two battles are good, but the fact that you can battle more of the trainers more than once - I wasn't able to battle any trainers again due to the 'time' fault - I only know this is possible as I own Ruby as well.
The story is alright, but I prefer the 'enemy' rival (Gary) as opposed to one who seems to be your friend!
Lastly, I think the look of 'your character' isn't as good as in Crystal.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant game with lots of pokemon   February 22, 2007

This game is brilliant. You start off choosing weather you want to be a boy or a girl. You then choose a pokemon. You can then choose your pokemon out of Torchic, Mudkip or Treeko. You then start your pokemon adventure. There are well over a hundred and fourty pokemon which makes it the pokemon game with the most pokemon. There are lots of towns and things to do. This best pokemon game yet. I would recommend to any-body 7 or over who has a GBA, SP or DS. It is Brilliant.
