Amazon.co.uk Review What's creepier than a sinister clown? Nothing, as it turns out, which is probably why the makers of Dark Chronicle--the sequel to Dark Cloud--made their evil villain a member of the circus family. After all, a clown who lifts the town's friendly mayor off his feet with a strangle hold is not to be messed with. Welcome to the world of Dark Chronicle. Stylistically, it resembles a 1980s child's playset. All the characters are of childlike proportions and the village's Tudor buildings seem pried from a Yorkshire hamlet. While Maximillian, the pre-teen hero, wanders around his hometown, Parisian accordion MIDI music serenades him. Though this is not a kids' game, gamers who are put off by kitschy/cute nuances should beware--this game is loaded with them. At its heart, Dark Chronicle is a wonderfully solid RPG. Its story has three main elements: Max's lost mother, the secret of what's going on outside the village, and why the evil clown wants Max's red stone pendant. Fighting takes place in real time, unlike the turn-based fighting in the similar Final Fantasy series. This was a good decision on behalf of the designers, as was the attention to weapon customising. And if you love to manage inventory (there aren't many RPG fans that don't), this is your game. Not only can Max's weapons be upgraded, but by taking pictures and tinkering, he can create tools from scratch, in seemingly endless variations. There's so much more to this game than can be described in any review. Along the way, for example, Max meets up with Monica, a princess from the future. He may build a village using the Georama system, or he may just want to do a little fishing--to say more would be to spoil the fun, but you get the idea. You'll just have to discover it all--and there is a tremendously rich world here--on your own. --Jennifer Buckendorff

Absolutely AMAZING March 29, 2008 The reviewer I absolutely and entirely love this game. It has now been about 4 years since I played this game and yet I still remember the storyline as if I was playin it now. This game is massive in the very sense of the word, the entire world is involved in the plot, the storyline is... EPIC and the characters are your friends for the duration of the game. The story also has many plot twists and yes.. moments where you will cry. Beautiful soundtrack (Anyone remember Garden of Memories). Absolute must buy for PS2 owners.

Dark Chronicle is one of those gems that slips under the radar as in the next few years has a huuuge following and its easy to see why. The semi-cell shaded characters are lovable and enjoyable and easy to like, the graphics are simply stunning - All the towns/characters and items fantastic. As usual its one of those games that has sounds/music that echos its brilliance. This isnt even the best thing about it. Thats its gameplay... A hack and slash - rank up that is engrossing and brilliant. You generally have your character you build, but also the weapons that max + monica ( the main characters) use - and this option leaves you with a massive amount of diversity. I completed the main game in abt 75hrs (I believe 45 + is a good average) but that opens another secret dungeon which I reckon will be another 20+ hrs.. this is in everyway a very serious a 100hr+ game easy. Why??? There is simply a huge amount to do. You invent different items by taking photos of certain objects, then you invent - this could be weapons /tools/ potions etc..and on the georama's the fun you can have by painting and creating . its great... it really is a fab game - Its one game i can honestly say I would never part with. I have sold other copies to other gamers - but I still have mine own. You want a game that'll suck your life dry and ask for more this is it in every sense. Far better than its original Dark Cloud ( that its self is still a very good game). Buy this game - thats it
(original+improvements)-all that was bad=MASTERPIECE July 25, 2005 Neoico 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
This is a visually stunning game, the graphics are charming the game play is great and the building sections offer far more freedom. This game is everything dark cloud should have been. This provided me with long game play, enjoyable storyline, charming graphics and a good selection of minigames. The ability to affect the future by building towns in the past is a great feature. And the bonus dungeon at the end of the game gives even more gameplay. IF you don't have this game buy it, it really is that good, it's a great game for everyone aged six to sixty!
