Amazon.co.uk Preview
Purposefully held over to take full advantage of next generation PC graphics cards and the new consoles, this latest sequel in the Unreal Tournament series is looking to set new standards for multiplayer first person shoot `em-ups. Considering developer Epic Games' Unreal graphics technology is used by so many other companies you always know a new Unreal Tournament game is going to look good. There's tons of new features beyond just eye candy here though, including a whole new game mode called Warfare, which works like a combination of the existing Assault and Onslaught modes, with more involved mission goals that make team play absolutely essential to success.

As you'd expect there's a hanger full of new vehicles and weapons including some nifty hoverboards for when you're just on-foot and a number of new robot mechs for you to drive; all with varying numbers of legs including tripods and four-legged walkers. The enormous Leviathan tank is particularly impressive, with four independently manned turrets and a giant energy weapon.

Considerable work has also gone into providing the game with a decent single player mode, never one of the series' highlights, with newly improved artificial intelligence that allows you to simulate a multiplayer game properly even when you're playing on your own. User created modifications (mods) will also continue to play a hugely important part in the game's success with the game shipping with a new version of the Unreal Editor for both PCs and consoles. After a quiet 2006, it seems like 2007 is going to be the best year ever for PC gamers.

5 out of 5 stars Epic games create an Epic masterpeice.   August 18, 2008
Jacob G. North (England)
Having followed the Unreal Tournament series right up until now I have been blown away at the sheer scale of mass destruction and death that trademarks these games.

This latest instalment has been yet another success. Never before have I actually considered the fact that the PC may actually be capable of realistic graphics, having been an extreme Xbox 360 gamer for a good year an a half until a few weeks ago when I made that big push and bought a 2,000 PC to run the latest games. This game came with the PC and I can say it was worth every penny just to play this game.

The graphics are beyond what I expected. I made a comparison between this and Call of Duty 4 (the leading game in `realistic graphics'). I got my mate to play CoD 4 (Xbox 360 version) on a TV next to my PC monitor while I played Unreal Tournament III at its highest setting. We both decided that UT III looks better by a long shot, even believing the gameplay to be more engaging than CoD 4.

I can't say a lot more without repeating what the other reviewers have already said, but I thought the graphical capability of this game should be clearly stated. I have a system where I compare graphics to real life and base it on a percentage. This theory works by analysing human faces and texture quality. I rate this game as having a 62% Realism Factor, which is the most I have given a game in a long time. Call of Duty 4 earned a respectable 54%.

4 out of 5 stars Superb   July 5, 2008

This was the first UT game I've played, so I can't really compare it to other games in the series. However, I've been extremely happy with it.

First of all, the graphics are amazing. Not as good as Crysis (obviously), but they are great. Unfortunately, you'll need a good computer to run them at full capacity, and I don't have one. I'm currently on the in-between setting, and it's quality is about the same as Halo 2, which is pretty good. I did however try to run it at 5, and through the slowness of my PC, I noticed it's better than a lot of console games, notably the PS3 version of this game, which is disappointing for the PS3, since it has so much potential. I have yet to see the 360 version though, and I ordered it and am currently waiting.

The multiplayer is one of the best I've ever played. It's frantic, fast-paced action, so if you're an adrenaline junkie (and video game addict, hehe) then this is perfect for you. But of course, this has its problems. You may find you die every 20 seconds. It's kill or be killed. You'll need lightning-fast reactions, because some of these people, are, shall I say, UNREAL?! Sorry. I couldn't resist. Apparently they removed some gametypes, but honestly, I'm happy with the selection.

The story is sort of weird. I know this is bad, but I haven't finished it yet. Sorry. From what I understand, there are aliens and you have to blow stuff up. Yeah. But that's not the weird part; you fight the aliens in a tournament-based war, with capture the flag and deathmatch style objectives... but you're not playing this game for the story, and that's what the developers knew.

This is a great game, I recommend it for FPS fans or people with a lot of energy. But be warned; if you're too slow, you'll die. Again and again.

4 out of 5 stars Speedy, action packed matches, back to the old school.   July 4, 2008

Finally, a shooter that sticks to its roots.

Who needs hardcore, hashed-up, quasi story themed FPS' when you have something as intense and fun-filled and at the same time - glistening with current technology models, lighting and physics.
Yummy.

Ok... so the menu system is terrible... the options a bit limited... but overall, hey, it's a great game.

And for a tenner...?!

2 out of 5 stars Looks pretty, but dumbed down for consoles - buy UT2004 instead   June 20, 2008
D'log
UT3 looks pretty, but we need more than that. It's been dumbed-down, presumably for console players. Millions of $s and years are spent on making a new game - but the developers can't be bothered to make two interfaces, one for consoles and on PCs? Amazing. Save your money, and instead buy a copy of Unreal Tournament 2004. The old UT2004 is still, even in 2008, three times the game that UT3 is, and is still about the most fast-paced fun you can get in any game that isn't one of the Pro Pinball titles. The graphics in UT2004 are not as slick as UT3, but play UT2004 on a good 24" LCD at 1920 x 1200px, and tweak your Nvidia control-panel settings a little, and the graphics still hold up well. You'll also find thousands still playing UT2004 in multiplayer, whereas UT3 seems dead online.

2 out of 5 stars Let's hope that Epic has learned their lesson   May 21, 2008
Azzor1911 (Den Haag, Holland)
Positive: graphics. mind-blowing, terrific, brilliant, spectacular. Unlike some people say, I think this game looks way better on the PC than on the PS3.

Negative: a lot of things :-(
As a long-time Unreal fan, I really, really regret to admit that I'm very disappointed with this game. It's amazing how a developer, Epic in this case, can let down so many fans with one major failure of a game that can't be set straight.

It's funny how so many big game sites (and magazines) dared to rate this game 4 out of 5 or higher (Gamespot and IGN, for example). The reviewers must have had a terrible mental disease which caused them not to notice the many ways in which this game sucked (just read the other reviews here if you don't know what I mean). Or Epic/Midway simply paid them to get a high rating, which I think is more plausible.
I also noticed that on their official forums, they actually delete threads in which people list in how many ways this game is inferiour to the prequels! They should call their forums "The Official *Censored* Epic Games Forums"

When I got this game (the day it came out) I immediatly went online and noticed there weren't many (populated) servers out there. I kept saying to myself "of course, it's just out, the player count will rise in a few days/weeks". But here I am, half a year later, a release on Steam and even after a huge price drop, and not a significant boost in online player counts.
People have said "I never have problems finding an UT3 server of any gametype". yeah sure, of any -gametype- but try finding a server that's playing a specific map. The recently released classics Face and Morbias are never being played online.

If you don't have this game yet and are thinking of buying it, go ahead if you're a long-time fan like me, but I wouldn't recommend it if you think you'll be playing any map any time (like in UT1999/2004 back in the day) online. If you just want this for good fun against bots, wait until the price has dropped even more.

2/5 overall, for many issues and
3/5 for gameplay, because if you are in a good mood and are trying to forget that only a handful of people are playing this game and manage to find a good server, it can be fun as hell!
