Editorial Reviews:

Amazon.co.uk Review

In a nutshell:
Known for its intense cinematic atmosphere and highly sophisticated artificial intelligence, the original PC version of F.E.A.R. also became infamous for the hugely powerful PC need to run the game’s graphics on their top settings. Which makes the closeness of this Xbox conversion all the more impressiveâ

The lowdown:
F.E.A.R. (First Encounter Assault Recon) isn’t your run of the mill first person shooter, with ghostly encounters and hellish visions straight from the likes of The Ring and Silent Hill. When you’re not being scared to death by spooks though you’re being shoot at by some of the most advanced artificial intelligence ever, which actually tracks you across the game world and ambushes you when you least expect it. As well as new Xbox Live options the 360 version of the game includes a new instant action single player mode where you can battle opponents in specially modified arenas taken from the story mode.

Most exciting moment:
Considering everything you’re up against it’s a good job you’ve got a few psychic powers of you own, primarily the ability to slow down time for a few seconds and quickly gain the initiative – and look cool while you’re doing it.

Since you ask:
Developer Monolith has already confirmed that work on a sequel to the PC original is underway, but the first new PC title will be an expansion pack subtitled Extraction Point.

The bottom line:
A near perfect conversion of one of the most technically advanced PC games ever made.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome, awesome game!   April 27, 2008
Dick Grayson (Gotham, USA)
I don't normally write 'gush' reviews, but having only recently gotten to play this incredible game that's been around for some time already, I'm going to do just that. FEAR is very probably the best FPS on 360(Alongside Bioshock of course).

Playing as an FEAR agent, you're tasked with hunting down a rogue nutter unleashing his army of soldiers against your organisation while simultaneously dealing with various ghost encounters which seem to have some bearing on your mission. It's hard to get too far into the excellent plot without spoiling things, so I won't, but be assured, it is a fine journey filled with suspense, horror and sci fi overtures.

The gameplay is very well put together, with a well rounded control system incorporating some tried and trusted ideas(Slowing down time for example) to spectacular and giving you some excellent weaponry that can be downright hilarious at times(Using a bog standard shotgun to blow a bad guy clean in half never seems to get boring in this game). You'll pick up how to play the game in no time, it's very easy to get into and unlike some FPS titles, never proves daunting to learn to play, it's simple run and gun action but in the best way imaginable.

Graphics, sound and atmosphere are all top notch, there isn't anything else to say on the matter, just 'top notch' stuff throughout.

It's been a while and it's likely all been said before, but FEAR really is an essential purchase if you have even the most remote interest in FPS games. You're almost certain to find something you like here.

I only regret that it's taken me so long to give it a go.

Like FPS's? - you need this. the 3 stars are for the campaign really- it is good and there are a few jumps in there- there are also 'Instant Action' Maps to do too, which is nice; but its 5 stars all the way for the multiplayer. I have Halo and COD4, both are good but I always return to FEAR. Basically, if you mixed Halo3 with FEAR's gameplay, then you'd have the perfect FPS.

(3 stars might be seen as a bit harsh.. I've had the game for about a year and played through it three times)

4 out of 5 stars Parts of it will make you jump !!!!!!!   April 6, 2008

I am not an expert on the 360 and this is one of the first games I have played, although I have played Halo 3 beforehand. I think the game is excellent, although I must admit at the start I struggled to get into it. Thankfully, I persevered and really enjoyed it the more the game went on.

I thought that the short out takes were a little confusing a times, but I suppose it is all part of the game. The weapons are good and the slow motion shows some good graphics. For me Halo 3 would just have the edge, but I am glad I played it

4 out of 5 stars For those who like guns but not plots ...   December 23, 2007

I wrote a review on this game whilst still halfway through it, and although I have changed my mind about how good the game actually was (now I've finished it), I still think there are some major problems for those looking for an action shooter AND an engaging storyline.

Without giving too much away, much of the plot is delivered in-game via radio transmissions, phone messages and laptop downloads. Pretty good idea - it's just that the implementation is horrible. In the options you can set the sound levels for FX, voice and music, but the 'transmitted' parts of the plot seem to have been lumped in with the FX channel instead of the voice; the result being that there is WAY to much background noise for you to be able to make out what people are saying. Hence most of the plot just disappears into the ether. This is a great shame, as it looks like the storyline was a real supernatural edge-of-your-seat job ...

Having said that, the game play is great - find your favourite weapon and obliterate the enemy (some very satisfying gore in this game ... try unloading a shotgun in someone's face at point blank range!). Some nice little surprises in terms of abilities too, which makes things MUCH more interesting than your average shooter.

Some of the earlier missions are a bit samey in terms of environment, but on the whole there's more than enough to keep you peeking round the next corner, and playing into the wee small hours.

4 out of 5 stars Intense, thrilling and over too soon   October 26, 2007

While it lasts, this is as immersive, exciting, spooky a shooter as you will find. The action is measured and the game works to create a great level of suspense between firefights; this is not simply 'run and gun'. The sense of being under fire is excellent: the sound effects are perfect and visually, the dust created by your enemies bullets, obscuring your view, adds to the realism. It won't take long to finish though and the ending is a little anti-climactic, with no real final boss pay-off (although it does have the mandatory twist at the end of the credits). An excellent FPS.
