Amazon.co.uk Preview
With the latest movie almost making up for the quality of the first two films it looks like Star Wars has won back the hearts and minds of fans everywhere and Battlefront II aims to be the perfect celebration of that. Like the original it's a sort of Star Wars version of PC hit Battlefield 1942, where two armies face off against each other, either off or online, jumping in and out of various vehicles as they find them.

Of course in Battlefield 1942 "various vehicles" meant jeeps and tanks, in Battlefront II it means X-wings, TIE Fighters, AT-ATs and, for the first time, Episode III vehicles like the BARC speeder, Jedi Starfighter II and V-wing.

The biggest change to the game, apart from the new vehicles, is space battles with several of the levels taking part aboard giant space cruisers which you can exit in starfighters, have a dogfight in deep space around and then pilot back to for a bit more on foot combat. Levels include the Blockade Runner from the beginning of A New Hope, the space battle above Coruscant and Utapau and Mustafa from Episode III.

Another long awaited addition is playable Jedi, although you can only be one for a short time so as to not unbalance the gameplay. Although the emphasis is on online play the single player mode has been beefed up with better artificial intelligence and a proper story linking all the missions. "Star Wars fans, like this, they will", as Yoda would say (if he was real and wrote game previews instead of being a Jedi Master). -- Harrison Dent

This preview is based on an incomplete version of the game; features or problems mentioned above may not appear in the finished game.

2 out of 5 stars I waited with anticipation and was disappointed   February 13, 2008

I had read so many reviews on this game, and the previous version. So may raved about it, and being the original was the best selling star wars game of all time, so I thought it has got to be worth a crack, as I love the films.

I got a copy recently, and I was under whelmed. OK positives are the star wars elements, the music, the film clips, and playing as stormtroopers, jedi's etc.

Maybe I haven't got into it yet, but the whole think feels to samey. The shooting games are just run around a fire randomly, there seems little skill or cannyness involved, unlike other games such as Medal of Honor, Battlefront, Call of Duty.

The missions all seem the same too, no variety.

The space ships ones are the same. It seems too fast to really involve skill, just frantically tracking and firing, then getting shot from behind.

I tried really hard to like this, but I think I will resell it again after 2 weeks of owning.

Genuinely gutted as I had waited 2 years to buy it.

When i first played this game i was wowed by the quality of the graphics and the overall gameplay.

The controls are all straight forward like most games, have to look at the manual tho' as otherwise you might end up blowing youself up like i did when mucking around with the controls.

Love the fact you can use various vehicles, some your own and can 'steal' vehicles off the opponent. the variety of infantry are very pleasing and the whole gameplay is fantastic.

The diversity of the content of the missions is pleasurable due to the fact you won't be at the same type of mission as before.

The bad points are that the AI units on your team are as thick as two planks and tend to wander into danger and wipe themselves out fairly quickly, so action has to be taken immediately and strategies are fairly limited.

All in all, a superb game to play with great graphic and fairly hard gameplay. A MUST

I absolutely love this game. It has to probably be my favourite PS2 game, out of those I've played - it's the perfect game to play with a friend or two. The maps never seem to get boring, and the gameplay is top notch in terms of graphics, sounds, music, interactivity and enjoyment. To be honest I only ever really play the 'instant action' mode against a friend, so I haven't even begun to release the full games potential - however this is all i seem to need to do as it just entertains me for hours. It's great for non star-wars fans.

The controls take a few tries to get used to however, but this is the same for most PS2 games (in comparison with Nintendo) - some of the maps can be quite confusing and overwhelming at some points, but once you explore the game and get used to it there is nothing to stop you from falling in love with it. I really can't think of anything bad to say about this game, go and buy it if you haven't already! You will never want to play anything else.

5 out of 5 stars Battlefield? Sorry, Battlefront   April 17, 2007

This is awesome. Before I start, I have to say that. It's got great graphics, very fast paced and easy to get into.

I also must say it's very much like Battlefield. Well...this could easily be a Battlefield mod. Whoever wasted their time making that Star Wars battlefield mod should have just waited for this because this is exactly the same, just in Star Wars locales. This also has a nice feature called heroes.

After killing enough enemies and so forth, you can become the Emperor! Or Darth Vader! Or...Each character has different moves, although they are all fairly similar. Except, suprisingly, the Emperor. He sucks.

So, to wrap it up, if you liked Battlefield, go and buy this. If you don't have online or many friends, you may eventually get tired of this. This is worth buying. I must say that. I whole heartedly recommend it to you, along with the original. If you don't have them both then pick them up now. I didn't regret it.
