Why all the bad reviews? March 15, 2008 M. King What i really do not understand, is why people are slagging off this game! This is probably the best fps on the ps2(i havn't played them all!) While some people complain about the length of the levels, this IS VERY ANNOYING mainly because there is only 2 checkpoints in a 50 minuet long level. But that's a minor flaw compared with the brilliant standard of the game. Even little things like how solid the guns feel, and the immense satisfacion you get in shooting someone with horlds of bullets. Don't belive what the other revewers have said, Black is AMAZING! This isn't a sub-standard fps, there are some amazing set pices in every level! The one in the second level deseves a mention. You are walking down a road in the forest when you come to a bridge with trucks and barrakades everywhere. Oh what to do? So, instead of charging staight at them, sidetrack up the hill to your left. You will fing an RPG!!!! Then from your vantag point you can rain down hell on the people on the bridge. This brings me to another point, the explotions in this game are BRILLIANT. They are defantly the best i have ever seen in a ps2 game! What you didn't get to see with me telling you about the bidge, was the immense explotions when all those trucks exploded. So, reasons to buy this game: 1) you love fps and you want one with grafics to rival the 360(well almost) 2) you love massive EXPLOTIONS! 3) you want to pump hords of bad guys with ak-47 bullets
Got plenty time on your hands? February 2, 2008 Duncan McDonald (Dundee) Black was released to a fanfare of publicity when it was first came out. Destructable environments they said. And they were right. However, underneath the shrapnel is a bog standard shooter just like Killzone and medal of honour, sorry 'honor' but a pretty good one none the less. The graphics are excellent, so is the sound and the music works well. Each mission involves shooting everyone and everything in sight. You can't turn a corner without something to blast. You play the usual saviour of your country given the sole responsibility of taking on hundereds of baddies for some obscure reason about black ops, retribution and stuff. Occassionally you get a computer buddy. As you've probably read the baddies take a few hits to go down and at times the level is swarming with them. Ammo in plentiful if you walk over the corpes but watch the health as you can only backtrack so far. Top up health and reload ammo every opportunity. There may be few levels but they are huge. They can cover more than one terrain and take at least an hour to work through, contantly blasting as we go. This is also the single biggest flaw with the game. Whilst the game has a few checkpoints per level if you die you go back to the last checkpoint. You then have to work back to where you were stuck. Not unusual. But. There are some nippy sections that require intense activity and repeated play to get through. After spending an hour or so getting there and another hour trying to get through the section, you are faced with a dilema. Do you continue for another couple of hours doggedly trying to complete the section - or - do you switch off and try tomorrow having to repeat the whole level again for an hour or so to get to where you left off. Why can't we just save at each checkpoint? After all they are the size of a level in some other games. The problem with Black is that you need a good bit of time on your side to play it and don't mind repeating bits. If you like FPS's you will like this. If you are a casual gamer where time is at a premium then this is best avoided. The frustrating structure discourages repeat play. But by the end you will have played each level several times over anyway!
Don't believe the hype! August 16, 2007 DonkeyDong (UK) 2 out of 15 found this review helpful
I was desperate for something new to play as the PS2 seemed to be having a games drought like never before so I was dumb enough to buy this game. The frame rate gets pretty bad when too much action erupts on the screen, there's an annoying blur effect when you go to reload your weapons. Like in real life in the middle of combat as a highly trained one man army you'd stop to concentrate your vision entirely on reloading your gun... LIKE F*** WOULD YOU!!! That was another lame idea like "Trails" in GTA:Vice City. EEEWWW TURN IT OFF! Well at least in GTA:VC you can! In this game it's compulsory that the world goes blurry, and I HATE IT! Another thing I totally agree with another reviewer about is how indestructible the enemy is, even with the best body Armour currently available getting a whole machine gun clip fired at you should stop you from breathing. Let alone walking and firing back, FOR GOD SAKE! You also can't configure controls to your liking or change the sensitivity of the look button, which means you'll be shot in the back several times and be practically dead by the time you've got aim at your enemy. While the graphics are good for a PS2 the enemy models from the couple of levels I did play were constantly repeated. There's the practically indestructible grunt and the crazy shotgun wielding grunt with extra thick body Armour, who is also practically indestructible. The overall colour theme of the levels is slightly grey/green in the same way Quake was bashed for being too overall brown. I like I bit more plot in any game than just shooting things and blowing stuff up. If you want the same sort of thing as I do in a game, you'll either be waiting for Deus Ex 3 with baited breath or jump in a time machine and go back to the awesomeness that is the original Deus Ex. Which by the way gives a player a choice as to whether you even want to be violent or not as well as having setup options that this heap of poop of a game is sorely lacking. [pompus enough?]
What can i say! August 4, 2007 A. J. Holmstock 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This has got to be the most fantastic shooting game ever made on the PS2! Made by Hollywood graphics designers every bit of scenery can be destroyed whether its hotel signs or phone booths! The gameplay and graphics are sublime and you can see the reflection of buildings being blown up on the car roofs. Aiming is quite easy on the game and you can destroy all vehicles. Some enemies are hard to kill and take 7 shots while others need 1 shot. The missions obviously get harder and harder but the final few missions are almost impossible. Be prepared to spend hours on end playing this awesome game!
Black, PS2s best fps June 14, 2007 Ed Maverick (England) 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
This game is undoubtedly one of the best games you can buy for the PS2. It has impressive graphics and gameplay unrivalled by many other first person shooters. Some magazine reviews branded the game as 'lacking in storyline' but I dispute this, i felt absorbed and involved with the main character. The only negative points for me were the lack of variation in the enemy soldiers, and the fact that there was no two player option. These are tiny disappointments when compared to the brilliance of the game.
