Cold Shower April 25, 2006 Finlay Meldrum (Kirriemuir) 4 out of 6 found this review helpful
I'll have to admit when i first saw this in magazines it did look impressive and alot of the features sounded pretty creative and it did look genuinely different which is a good thing considering FPS's are getting a little stale. Now, a year on and things are a little different when i actually got a chance to play the game. First thing is the graphics seem to have aged alot from when it came out, especially with games like Black and Doom 3 on the market this looks like a ps2 launch title, with bland indoor textures and identical enemies. The other thing that stands out is it feels really slow in terms of movement, especially when you zoom in to get a more accurate shot on an enemy you seem to take a lot of bullets before you've made your shot, the other thing id like to add here is that you'r basically invincible as you have a medipack that never runs out and completely fills your health everytime you use it,it feels completely one sided and making the game almost pointless, why play if theres no real threat? The physics engine is pretty poor too when you compare it to games such as half life 2,the game as a hole reminds me of soldier of fortune,in the sence limbs can be blown off,but thats where the similarity ends,as this is slow and quite a chore to play the voiceovers are also iffy, and the use of swearing is comical. To look at cold winter it seems like Sierra rushed this out to compete with the amount of FPS's that came out last year and what we have here is a shell of what could have been a genuinely good game. Before i write this off as a complete disaster there are some nice touches, the combine system is quite good and offers a change to the bland see enemy, kill enemy formula that goes on,also the chance to "cook" grenades so they detonate more or less on impact is a nice touch. A plus point to the game is that the price in most shops is very cheap but even @ 7 it feels too expensive. If you really must, rent rather than buy
Does what it says on the box........ February 18, 2006 Dino Amore' (Hadleigh, Essex) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Cold Winter, at the price it is now, is an absolute steal. While it is, in many ways, a conventional First Person Shooter, it is superior in that there is a genuinely excellent storyline, with some beautifully rendered cut scenes. The graphics are very good, without being spectacular, and the AI is reasonable, although sometimes I found that you could stand level with opponent soldiers, and they would not see you. Range of weapons was good, and you could tinker with a variety of ways to bump off your opponents. A little gory, but in a cartoony way. Bad points? Over a little too quickly, but you do get a good range of locales, so its a minor point. Solid game, highly recommended at this price. Enjoy!!
VIOLENCE! December 28, 2005 Mr (Glasgow, United Kingdom) 5 out of 7 found this review helpful
An excellent First Person Shooter game that is engrossing, violent and very realistic (so I've been told) and to top things off several main (good) characters are British, with genuine British accents. When the enemy are shot in the leg or arm, it's blown off. Similar to Soldier of Fortune for the Dreamcast. Worth a look, especially as it's relatively cheap now. The 18 certificate is justified for a lot of realistic violence/gore and profanities.
A Superb Story and an even better FPS September 1, 2005 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
Being a big fan of FPS I thought i'd give this a try after reading pretty good reviews online. I must say that the story is one of the best around for a video game, well written and even more fun to play. The graphics are superb and the variety of weapons and gadgets make it fun to play. A must for anyone who loves great FPS games and great storylines in videogames.
Absorbing fun August 6, 2005 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
Not being of the kind to be glued to the PS2, this has taken a couple of months to play. And it must be said, it is good fun, although I found it pretty easy. There are arrows to tell you where to go next; renewable health at no penalty, and body armour that takes a lot of punishment before putting you in trouble. It's certainly easier than Castle Wolfenstein, and far less complex than Deus Ex to play. There is no interaction with characters required as it is linear (other than killing most of them, of course), no bonus points to collect so no incentive to do extra tasks, and even the end is routine. The point is though, that the game is what it claims. A story spread over several missions, and your job is to do various tasks while finding ways to delete the enemy. If you are looking for no more than that, it is perfect. And, for those who enjoy Tom Baker's acting, he is featured throughout. All in all, this will keep you absorbed, but you may feel it could have been more challenging.
