Stunning January 26, 2007 Mr. Jason Taylor 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I played Phantasy Online Ver 2 on the Dreamcast and ever since owning a Playstation 2 could only dream of actually playing a Phantasy Star game online again. Im so greatful to the Official Playstation2 Mag otherwise i wouldnt have known about the release of this game and would never have connected my PS2 to the internet. Well since buying this game from Amazon upon its release ive lost interest in all other ps2 games in favour of playing this gem in the online mode. Im not going to discuss the offline mode. This game needs to be experienced with other players and experience it you must. The only downside is theres a monthly fee to pay which in all honesty is worth every penny. This is a game that draws you in. Phantasy Star Universe is big. There are 3 planets to explore each offering several team missions and also solo missions. Theres weapon shops, clothes shops, parts shops, item shops, armour shops, plus you can create your own shop and sell your old weapons or make new weapons, armour etc and sell them to other online players who do like to haggle now and then. Sega update this game every week adding extra missions, parts, armour, weapons, clothes, room decorations (yes you can customise your room). I think if you like Star Wars and Final Fantasy your going to love this. Choose one of four different characters and come join Phantasy Star Universe. You will also need a keyboard if your playing on the ps2. The ps2 and pc versions share the same servers. This is one of the most involving games ive ever played and already clocked up nearly 600 hours without an end in sight.
Another great game from the Phantasy Star series! December 2, 2006 Jenny (England) 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
(This review is on the view of someone who has played/loved PSO before buying this) I have been a huge fan of Phantasy Star Online for the Dreamcast and Gamecube. So i was eagerly awaiting the release of Phantasy Star Universe! This game is very different from the others, it has an actual storyline! I havent got that far in the game yet, but so far i am really loving it. You are drawn into the life of Ethan Waber, a 17yr old guy who makes a decision to join a group called 'The Guardians' who help protect the people of the 3 planets. In offline/story mode each chapter is started by a little preview of whats ahead, which is very much like a tv series! This is a great way to exite you about what you are going to do next, and i like playing the game a chapter-per time so far as they are quite lengthy. The game still has the look of Phantasy Star Online, but is so much more. The characters have more detail and the outfits are still very cool. The new 'base' ship is HUGE. Which is great fun to explore, and get lost in ^^ You jump straight into the storyline as soon as you start, including fighting monsters! The monsters may be slightly easier to kill, i find, in this game. But i think that is only because there are double the amount of those in PSO. Battles can become very hectic and you have to watch you (and your party's) HP carefully or you find they die on you quickly! And the locations where you fight are in very good detail, they are large and complex, and very enjoyable (much like PSOver2). The new save points in PSU certainly are different, but they somehow help the game feel more like a RPG (in a good way). In conclusion to my short review, Phantasy Star Universe is a game those who may or may not have played PSO will enjoy. The real-time battles are very exiting and the new storyline mode adds much more to the game. I am sure there are more things about this game to write about, but i hope this has helped some people to go for it and buy this great game! ^_^
all in all a good gaming experience November 30, 2006 Mr. P. G. Shorley-Smith 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
apart from a few down points i have found phantasy star universe to be very enjoyable, my most favourite part is the real time battles with no random encounters and the side missions when you feel like taking a break from the main storyline. it plays like a tv series with diffrent chapters that have an opening and closing fmv and at the end of each chapter theres a "next time..." clip just like a tv series, this is unique but can proove to be quite annoying when you just want to get on with playing the game. some other down points is the network mode which you have to pay monthly to play, the only other bad point that i can find with this game is that you can't pause it. apart form that it's a thoroughly enjoyable game with an immersive storyline and a good selection of weapons and skills aswell as the ability to customize your character, there are some truely excellent characters and allies that make it a worth while addition to the series.
