Amazon.co.uk Review
When it comes to vast, kingdom-spanning ambition, you can't do better than Microsoft's Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings. Microsoft went all out to create this real-time strategy game, and it fairly hums with gorgeous graphics, sophisticated AI and challenging scenarios for the novice and experienced player alike.

The point of the game is to shepherd your fledgling civilisation to world domination, using war, trade and exploration. You start with the bare minimum to get going, and you've got to balance your people's needs with your desire to be a little Napoleon. The Age of Kings gives you a ton of new units and technologies to enrich your strategic options. Each scenario is placed accurately within history, but you're also free to create your own.

The multiplayer format is robust, allowing up to nine players to share a world. When battles commence, you can take control of every aspect of your workers and soldiers, sending them running for shelter in the town centre, ordering them to defend a watchtower, or setting their combat stance to aggressive for free-for-all sword smashing fun. When you're not fighting, find your idle peasants with a mouse click and send them back to work chopping trees, rounding up sheep, fishing or mining gold and stone.

As you acquire more resources, you can improve your soldier's gear and skills, start to trade more efficiently, and make life better for everyone in your empire. You can choose from 13 groups to manage, from the Japanese to the Teutons and Franks. Each group has unique units and special characteristics, making this a game that changes every time you play it.

If all this sounds complicated, it is. New players may be intimidated by the range of choices, but the teaching scenarios are very helpful in conquering the controls. Age of Empires II is a sophisticated, gorgeous successor to the wildly popular original. It's a real feather in Microsoft's cap--a world-building game that will hold you captive. --Therese Littleton

5 out of 5 stars Real Time Strategy just doesn't come any better than this   March 29, 2008

AoE has a sound pedigree & the Conquerors' Expansion is the icing on the cake.
The facility to customise your own camaigns is irresistible & enthralling.
It has excellent graphics & a number of levels on which to play helps prevent early frustration & encourages learning.
This is ideal for both the seasoned game campaigner or the absolute beginner.
Hours of endless escapism - fabulous!

4 out of 5 stars This is better than AOE 3   January 29, 2008

Age of Empires remains the ultimate in RTS games and this is without a doubt the best one. There is something about Age of Empires II that makes you still want to play it even though it was made over 5 years ago. Writing this review after AOE 3 having been around for a while I still think this is better. It's true that the graphics aren't great and the computer AI is poor but the gameplay is excellent. To experience the best from this game you definately have to play against another person but there is enough depth in the game with different maps and civilisations to make this great fun for a long time.

The Gold Edition gives good value including bith AOE 2 and the Conquerors expansion pack which is definately worth having. Get this game and enjoy the hours of fun to be had!!!

5 out of 5 stars In one word... AMAZING!   January 8, 2008

I had both of these games when they first hit the scene years ago, and several years later the thrill of seeing your army razing an enemy town to the ground is still incredible! I have been playing AOE2 since it first came out, and in my opinion it is testament to the quality of this game that I am still playing it now (the online capability significantly prolongs the gameplay, this was and still is one of the game's main selling points). The price seems to have gone up a little but even at this price it is still one of the best (if not, THE BEST) RTS experiences anyone will ever have!

5 out of 5 stars Great Game   October 9, 2007

This is one of the best games ive ever played, thats including all of the Command and Conquer games aswell as the black and white games. Microsoft really out did themselves with this one. I think that the create your own map part is really fun as you can just add more villagers or soilders to make a great mass slaughter.

5 out of 5 stars A pretty historical escape   May 27, 2006
I can laugh about it now but at the time (UK)

I've owned this game for a while now and still find the time to waste an afternoon on a random map or two. The gameplay on this is excellent with definite differences in strategy required for different landscapes and civilization types, and the graphics with its isometric animations, render characters and buildings attractively. My only complaint.. the slightly empty feeling after winning a long battle of attrition against AI.. still one day when I'm confident enough I'll join the online crowd.
