Amazon.co.uk Review
The Game Boy Advance Console features power that would have been unthinkable back when the original Game Boy was launched. Its 32-bit RISC CPU runs circles around the former machine's 8-bit workhorse, allowing it to process program instructions much faster. What that means to everyday gamers is more intricate visuals, more simultaneous movement on the screen and better sound. In fact, the often-annoying bleeps and bloops of old-school Game Boy titles are being replaced with digitised stereo sound. When you first pick up the system, you'll notice how lightweight it is. It's a little less than 150 grams but a little larger than a deck of playing cards. The GBA's wider shape fits better into a wider range of hands and the screen is fitted with antiglare technology--you need pretty good light to play by but you won't be craning your neck and tilting the unit to see around the reflection of the light bulb in your screen.

You'll also notice the graphics. Essentially sporting redesigned SNES technology, you'll see things on the GBA that the big consoles do, such as scaling (making objects larger or smaller) and rotation effects--technological advances that will affect the look of everything from crossing a finish line to scoring a goal to crawling through a dungeon. The extra processing muscle also means you can network up to four Game Boy Advance units together, via the communication cable, for multiplayer fun from one shared cartridge. Because the Game Boy Advance system is backward-compatible, it will play not only its own line of colourful games--including such launch titles as Super Mario Advance, F-Zero: Maximum Velocity, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 and Kuru Kuru Kurunin--but also nearly all the monochrome and colour games that have already been released for the previous Game Boy systems. It seems that Nintendo have wisely struck a balance between size, price and power consumption. And considering how well the old 8-bit system weathered the decade's technological storms, the Game Boy Advance should be here to stay. --Porter B Hall

5 out of 5 stars A handheld console that you'll treasure   June 23, 2003

This is something that you've got to have. There's absolutely loads of games for it of numerous different genres and age ranges. You can get it in your favourite colour and the graphics have come on in leaps and bounds. If you already own a home console then do get this as well as you can play it anywhere but I would advise that you don't get the same games for both as the graphics and sound would be miles better on your home console. I think everyone should have a GBA it's great value for money and if you get great games you won't be able to put it down.

I've wanted one of these for ages...imagine, having a console in the palm of your hand! However, as amazing as the graphics are, it's just so hard to see them. The screen is dark enough, even in perfect light conditions, but when it comes to playing where there's bad light - forget it. It's impossible to see, and the addition of an add-on light doesn't help - light is reflected back and you end up squinting and fidgiting trying to get the right position. Why didn't Nintendo put a backlight on? I mean, there could be a switch to decide if you wanted it on or off, so that would sort out the battery issues. A great console with great games, shame you can't really see them properly.

4 out of 5 stars Screen Quality   November 19, 2001

The gameboy color is exellent.
The only problem, is the screen brightness.
If u are in an even slightly dark room, it is a strain to see wats is being displayed.
Apart from this, it is a superbly designed piece of kit, with some great functions

4 out of 5 stars Wicked graphics, ok sound, plays yr old games - this rocks   August 14, 2001

I bought my GBA after playing a mates and suffice to say I'm not disappointed. Yeah fair enough, the screen is dark but a light/magnifier sorts that for a measly tenner. the graphics are excellent, the sound is nothing special (but then this is a handheld, and doesn't take CD's) and the game play on the games I've got (GT THQ and Rayman) is fantastic. And you can play all the old GB and GBC games on it too. Oh, and the batteries last ages. The only reason I didn't give it five stars is because some of the colours, especially the red are well nasty. The clear one looks great though, and apart from anything else, the three girls I've let play it have all asked for my phone number. Sorted!

5 out of 5 stars heaven in the palm of your hand   August 5, 2001

Ignore all the reviews dissing this master piece of a console, which say it has bad quality sound and graphics, this just demonstrates there ignorance and that they have absolutely no idea about computer games. To start with the screeen is excellent, people complain that you can only use it in the light and not in the dark, whilst this may be true, the game gear could only be used in the dark and not in the light, which would you rather? Also considering there is no backlight in the screen the battery life has been boosted to a staggering and easy on the pocket 20 hrs on two AA bateries. Now that is genuis. The Graphics are pin sharp and super smooth, plug in some head phones and sound quality is exceptional, playstation quality in some cases, though the in unit speaker does not do this sound justice, but hey, it is a hand held system what do you expect, hifi quality sound? ...this is VERY VERY good value for money. Oh and to finish, look at the size of the games library all ready, it is a month after its release got several top quality games on all ready, and look at the list of upcoming games, street fighter 2 super, mario kart, doom..... i cant wait.
