Amazon.co.uk Review Larger in scope than its predecessor and better in almost every way, Breath of Fire II is a perfect port of the original SNES game and will leave role-playing fans begging for more. The game starts out, dreamlike, in a small border village 500 years after the events of the first game. You play a small boy named Ryu (ring a bell?) who is looking for his lost sister. After finding his sister and reuniting her with pops, Ryu wanders around a bit and returns home--and that's when things really start to get interesting. To go further than that would risk spoiling the story, but we can say that the plot is really top notch this time around and has three alternative endings. Graphically, the game is a huge jump from the original. The towns are larger, the character sprites are more detailed, and the field map is gorgeous. You see weather effects such as rain and drifting clouds, wandering animals and jumping fish, and plants blowing in the breeze. If you have any experience with the best 16-bit RPGs for the SNES, like Final Fantasy VI or Chrono Trigger, you get the idea. The characters are completely new in the series, and have brand-new skills. The only exception is Ryu (who isn't the original Ryu, but basically has the same skills). Like the original Breath of Fire, certain areas of the game are only accessible by using the skills of your party members. For example, one of your members can turn into a frog, and can ferry you across rivers and streams. Among the changes to Breath of Fire II is that fishing and hunting have bigger roles; they're now mini-games that require technique and reward with items that can advance the story. An animated monster image shows up on the field menu to give you an idea how often you'll encounter the baddies--nice for avoiding all those random battles. There's also the new Guts stat, which will sometimes allow a character to fight even when he should be knocked out. The two coolest additions are town creation (where you get to build and populate your own town), and the new fusion system, which allows your characters to "fuse" with shamans that you encounter, thus joining and augmenting their powers. In a nutshell, this game improves upon the best parts of the original.--Bryan Karsh

BoF2! whoo! November 28, 2004 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
BoF2 is one of the greatest games i have ever played! Appart from the slightly off graphics, this games story line, characters and battle systems are very imaginative. You use a turn-based battle system and the characters all use their own unique abilities which differ from BoF1 (except the main char's ability).Armed with an array of weapons and magic, including dragon transformation, this game has ALOT of bonuses, and, with 3 endings, this game will keep you entertained for hours on end!I highly recommend this game! I've played it 12 times now! :) Trust me,i'm a gamer!
Best RPG for GBA? July 19, 2004 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I have been debating whether BoF2 is the best RPG for the Gameboy Advance. Its up there with fantastic RPGs such as Golden Sun, and the Pokemon games. I would have to rate BoF2 the best of these games. Even though the graphics may not be as stunning as Golden Sun's and it may not have the hundreds of character combinations that Pokemon sapphire and ruby have, this game is great. The battles are fun and easy to master, the world is huge with cities and other places to visit. You can even create your own city towards the end of the game, this little factor gives it the edge over other RPGs.If your a fan of RPGs i would definatly recommend buying this.

I noticed some good reviews about this game, and I bough it. It was kind of a gamble, since i never had seen it before. It was worth it! I was so glad to see, that Breath of Fire II, lived up to my expectations, and other peoples reviews.I have not tried so many GBA games but I really think u should give it a try, if u are looking for a good RPG (role playing game). I will try to rate it: Gameplay/Story: 4 /6 Sound: 4,9/6 Grafics: 5,2/6 Overall: 5/6 stars. If u like RPG games, and u just finished ur last one, buy Breath of Fire II!
Fantastic RPG July 19, 2002 Mr. J. R. Davidson (UK) 10 out of 10 found this review helpful
I have to say i'm not really in to Role Playing Games (i've played Baldur's Gate on the PC and thoroughly enjoyed it), but I saw this and had heard good things about the original Breath of Fire so I bought it to see what all the fuss is about. There is a strong story line running through the game which does its job of bringing you into the game world. The quests are varied and there appears to be absolutely loads of them, i've had the game for about a week and there feels like there is a lot more to go, I haven't even begun to build my own village yet! You'll encounter a wide range of people who will join your party although you can only have a total of 4 people in your party at any one time. Their skills differ greatly, with a huge number of spells, abilites and skill to find. Coupled with a large number of different items, weapons, armour, shields to equip them with means there is no lack of variety. There are two things that let the game down.....not always knowing where you are to go (but talking to people will always hint at what you need to do) and the random encounters which get annoying in some areas but are critical to levelling your character (and you could always run away!). This game is bursting at the seams with playability and I havn't even talked about the fishing and hunting sub games!!! It will last you ages.
absolutely amazing July 13, 2002 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
Breath Of Fire II is the most amazing rpg game i have played on the game boy advance. It has crisp clear graphics and brilliant gamplay. The game is full of fun, action and is very addictive. The game will keep you playing for hours and will get you through the longest car journey. Not much different from the first but still a must-have game for all GBA owners.
