Not too much of a party going on... March 11, 2008 T. Clarke (UK) I was quite fortunate I paid under a Fiver for this game - anything more and I quite certain the money would be wasted. I can only back what the previous reviewer has said, and to say this is a funny little game. Not only is it a different way of playing to the original N64/GC versions, but theirs nothing to keep you hooked. In short, instead of playing around boards with other CPU/ friend players, you have a tedious task of going around 'towns' (merely appearing as the traditional board) and completing challenges to earn.. gadgets? Hmm This being said, you'll note I gave it 4 Stars, because not all is dull. The sound's are nice, the graphics are pretty descent for the GameBoy, and some of the challenges are.. well, a challenge! Perhaps the fact that you could be desperate to complete just one challenge to be able to move on keeps you going, but after it's complete, their is little reward. Even when you first begin the game, the challenges are hardly taxing. To add to this, many of the N.P.C (Non playable characters) can chat forever. This adds to frustration when Bowser goes on about how incredible he is and how he is constantly threatening to beat you in challenges. Then you beat him and he dribbles on about "No! This can't be happening" blah blah... It's a disappointing conversion in my eyes and is perhaps decieving. Like many others, I was expecting a true 'Mario Party' addition. The reality is that it is no more than 'Mario Being Bored In A Party' (Perhaps this game covers his false directions to the Party?)
Not much of a party.. August 24, 2006 Ms. B. M. Young (London, UK) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
After being a big fan of the Mario Party games on the N64 & Gamecube, I thought I would give this game a shot. The commercial for the game looked good, so you know I had to buy it. I was horrified to see that this game had hardly anything on the title screen. Just a story mode, or vs mode. It wasn't very appealing. The whole point of the story mode, is to chose a character. I was a bit disappointed, you could only choose Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach or Yoshi. All the characters are linked to story mode, so you can save your game and carry it on with another character at another part of the board. As for the vs mode, if you want to have a Mario Party, you will absolutely enjoy it on the N64/Gamecube. The GBA vs mode is awful, and very slow. You each take it in turns to play the game, and you can't all play on the board. It's just minigames. No mischevious characters like Bowser are really on vs mode. Okay, back to the story mode. You have to go around the board, talking to people in the different houses and completing quests for them. When you complete a quest, you earn Minigames and Gadgets. The minigames are okay, not great. The gadgets are useless, and don't do ANYTHING. And the another annoying thing is, you start off with 5 mushrooms. Everytime the dice rolls, you loose a mushroom. Also, everytime you leave a house you lose one. When you run out of mushrooms, you have to start over at the starting point, and your quest is over! Is this is very annoying, as some of the quests require you to travel a long way on the board, and 10 is the maximum number of steps you can take. It's really frustrating. Overall, here are my ratings: Fun: 6/10 (Some minigames are enjoyable) Graphics: 7.5/10 (Very nice graphics, 3D) Sound: 4/10 (Annoying background music) Gameplay: 5/10 (The mushroom count is very annoying) BIOS: 4/10 (It takes a while to load, and the same old messages telling you how to play) If you are a true Mario fan, I seriously wouldn't buy it. If you find a cheap second hand one on Amazon, then you should consider. No way should you purchase this game brand new from a shop. It's not worth it. If you want to play an exciting Mario Party, buy a GameCube! Or who knows, maybe they'll make one for the Nintendo DS!
