Very Good July 10, 2007 Bertie (UK) This is an adventure platforming type game but with so many of this type of game already in the market is it worth looking at? at first this game looks nothing special but soon becomes a delight to play. the main character you play as "sphinx" has stages we all know from typical games of this genre and isn't that special however it's the mummy sections that really elevate this game above the rest. the mummy is able to be half-killed; this could be putting him on fire, splitting him up and a variety of other things to overcome absolutely amazing puzzles. If it was just the mummy but longer this would have been 5 stars but i feel the sphinx sections are a bit boring in comparison to the fantastic mummy bits. this game is quite long and reasonably challenging

This is simply one of the greatest games of all time. In every area - be it gameplay, artwork, music, characters, storyline, sound effects or animation - it shines, thereby constituting a splendid tribute to the grand civilization of Ancient Egypt. Indeed, Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy deserves to be held up as a textbook example of how to create a videogame. As its title indicates, this game has two protagonists, and play switches between one and the other - a refreshing innovation that keeps the player engrossed. The characters of Sphinx - a silent, determined demigod, and Tutankhamen - an unfortunate, careless prince - make an excellent contrast. The other personalities who furnish its rich environments, are also ably developed. Graphically, Sphinx is fabulous. The game is so well-drawn that playing it is no less than a spiritual experience. Temples, palaces, dungeons - even the city sewers - are a pleasure to behold and explore. The characters and creatures in the game are also designed in detail, and Eurocom appears to have put particular attention in ensuring that their motion was realistic. The results speak for themselves. Musically, this game is divine. From the stirring opening theme, to the lofty background tune of Heliopolis, to the pensive, profound piece in the Anubis Tower, Sphinx is an auditory adventure. The music is always suited to the area and situation, thus amplifying an already charged atmosphere. The result is absolutely supernal. Games are about gameplay, and Sphinx does not disappoint. The main character is not only handy with an extraordinary sword, but also a blowpipe (with four types of darts) and shield; furthermore, his tasks involve not only the usual running, jumping and fighting, but also capturing and unleasing monsters in the course of the game. With the Cursed Mummy, the gameplay attains another level altogether; play it and you'll see. The storyline of Sphinx is first-class, (with a somewhat surprising ending) involving the struggle between the Ancient Egyptian Gods Osiris and Set, with the God of Death, Anubis playing a key role. Alongside the main plot, there is a secondary tragedy concerning Prince Tutankhamen, with the two tales becoming intertwined in one of the most memorable episodes of the game. Further schemes and challenges bring added depth of what is already an enthralling experience. A bonus feature on the disc, is a short video on the making of Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy. It reveals that this is the game that the men in Eurocom always wanted to make - a majestic marvel that they put their hearts, minds and souls into. It seems that they enjoyed creating it as much as I enjoyed playing it, a reminder that products of the highest quality can only be generated when their makers take pride and joy in their work. This is how a videogame should be.
As good as Jak? November 26, 2004 C. O'Connor (Birmingham, UK) 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
Now, heres a game thats new and original-another platformer in an already overcrowded market. The question is, does this stand up to the competition? The storyline is basically, you as Sphinx, who is a demi-god, attempting to stop the evil Ra from taking over the universe. At the same time, the ruler of Eygpt has been turned into a mummy, and its your job (and his) to try and resurrect him to his former glory. There are a couple of other twists and turns in the game, but to tell you them would be taking away the surprise and intrigue-putting it bluntly, the story is easily as good as Jak and Daxters and Ratchet and Klanks. The gameplay is highly original. You play as Sphinx, who as the warrior, can use the arsenal he has at his dissposal, to take down the minions of Ra. He has the usual, sword, blow pipe, some magical abilities, so nothing new there. Its the mummy thats different though. At points in the game, the action centres on the mummy, and because he is a mummy, he cant die. So you literally run into fire, acid, and booby trapped rooms just so you can advance. However, theres also an element of stratergy here. Say you need to be thin enough to fit through some pipes, you need to go and enter a room that'll squash you-then you can advance. Graphically, its just as good as Jak, and Ratchet and Klank. The characters are all interesting, with many half human, half animal sort of creations wandering around a vast desert landscape or a thriving city plagued with rodents, or an incredible metropolois surrounded in jewels. Some of these will help you, and others would rather attack you before they even look at you-YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED. The sound is fairly good as well, with some interesting eastern compositional work that reflects sort of nature of Eygptian history and contemporary religion. So what lets this game down. There are so many "established" platformers on the market, and this is just another one of them. Its no better in honest, and no worse than the others. But if you like that sort of game, than this is definitely worth more than a look at. (PS it takes roughly 12 hours to complete)
sphinx and the cursed mummy! June 30, 2004 Ms. A. M. Thompson (UK) 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
when i played this game, at first i wasn't impressed. but after the first level or two i found that the game really picked up and i loved it!! the story is great. an evil egyptian god is trying to wipe out an entire civilisation so its up to sphinx to save the world! there's a mummy that has been cursed and you use both him and sphinx for certain levels in the game. the mummy is hilarious, he can set himself on fire or charge himself with electricity to solve the many riddles and puzzles. with sphinx you have a sword and a blow dart gun, the ability to swim and fight. it's a great 3d adventure that will have you hooked. don't be dismayed by the first part of the game, it's a little dull but when you get going it really is a fantastic game with lots to explore and solve!

Top game. Must be one of the best games i've played ever. Maybe eventopping the classic Banjo-Kazooie games but i doubt that. The graphics are great as they are. no need for life like graphics here. The puzzles are so good, it can take you hours of exciting gameplay toconquer them all. It doesnt get boring i can say though. I dont like games which can take a day to complete, but this is taking meages! it has a unique storyline. And another good thing is that lots ofdifferent tasks are set all around Helopilos and Abydos with lots ofdifferent characters.
