Buy this game - its brilliant July 24, 2008 K. L. Sanderson 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is my first ever review so hopefully that will show how great I think this game is. Upside - as a veteran WoW player the graphics are great, go back onto WoW and it looks like a comic book - not a bad thing but funny. Combat is different but once you get used to it I prefer it as you have to think not just press the same key repeatedly. Gathering is also better for me as you level at the same time thanks to being attacked at most resources. Quests are good and having to do the starting levels does make sense as it gives you chance to get used to the game. (I've played it with each of the 4 major types of characters and it runs slightly different threads of the same story in each). Guild citys are amazing - watching the walls go up after everyone had donated materials is a thing to behold. Fallen Wild the guild I'm with are on tier 2 and the citys great. Bugs - yes there are some but many are due to player inexperience not the game - my husband spent a whole day swearing at the computer and muttering that the game was bugged when he was trying to gather resources and the game wouldn't let him as he was in combat mode - he only needed to press the toggle combat key and he would have been fine :) I sent in a bug report and gave up on a character as I'd got it stuck down a mountain - found out a couple of days later that the spell "Path of Azura" would have returned me to my home point with no trouble at all. Possible downside - yes I've heard that it needs a good computer so as I was looking for an excuse to buy one anyway I treated myself to a quad core, 8MB RAM, 9800 NVid machine (cost about 700). It runs great on this and I've never had any problems at all. So to sum up - yes this game is developing, but I think its far better to give it a chance and stay for the ride than critise it as its already better than the other games I've tried. Also if its this good now it will be fantastic if its supported.
be very careful July 13, 2008 Mr. J. Tuttle (uk) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
i bought this game after reading many previews in the press and thought id give it a whirl, after playing wow and guild wars, i wish i hadnt bothered, to let you know my system is as follows Q6600 o/c to 2.78ghz 4 gig ram, and two 8800GTX in sli, and well its jerky!!!!! the most frustaing thing is the game seems to crash every 15-20 mins of playtime, meaning a complete reboot and lost playing time. i have downloaded all the huge patches but still seems one of the buggiest games in recent memory, whats also really annoying is that you cannot even play in DX10, untl yet a further patch is released in the autumn, its a jerky buggy stuttering mess of a game that should not have been released in this stateGRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR buy with caution
over all a very good game July 13, 2008 C. W. Evans (on my computer) firs of all I think Funcoms launch went far better then any other online game I have played during launch sure it has its problems but then what online game is perfect on launch first of all the good:- the combat system of this game is far more fun then others I have played to a point you actally feel involved, no longer does your attack just hurt one guy at a time if theres another guy standing next to him and hes in range of the attack he gets damaged the frist 20 lvls like overs have said before me is based on the starting island where you take part in alot of single player quests I myself think this is a great way to easise people in if there new to the whole online game thing I myself remember how shy I was when I first played an online game to a point I was too afraid to ask for help which brings me on to the help system on AoC the help system has its own chat channle that you can only see up to lvl 20 and I found that this newbie help chat channle is a rather good idear and a very helpful thing indeed now another thing I like about this game is how much more mature the players of this game are sure you get the odd one who still thinks there only 13 but overall its a far more mature and layed back place where people insted of being quick to call you noob when posting a question insted respond in a much more mature and helpful manner the quests on AoC I feel have been done rather well there easy to a point that you have no difficulty doing them alone but also still challenging if you don't plan out what your doing the group quests are well done as well sure some are easy enough that you can do them alone if your skillful enough and strong enough and as normal the rewards for doing group quests are of the rare kind. now here are the cons of the game the bad points:- first of all the resource filds I am not sure if its just me or not but I find that for an area thats meant to be for gathering resources seems so deprived of said resources I don't mind that they don't have the whole icon on your map to show you if there is a resources near by like on WoW and other such games what I do mind is the fact that for such large areas as these resoucre filds are there is a total lack of said recources but like I said it could just be me I don't know but I myself feel there should be more resources on hand now secondly if your computer is older then 2 years you won't have a hope in hell of playing this game my computer is only about 2 years old and all I have upgraded is my graphics card but I am able to run the game fine at a frame rate of 30 with 1GB of RAM and P4 but basicly if your computer struggles to play WoW I would say stick to WoW for the time being until your able to upgrade your computer but overall I found this to be a very enjoyable game that I myself have found far more enjoyment playing then any other such online game but as others say if your not sure just wait round for a bit for a 14 day free trail to come out or even if a friend has a copy of the game with a buddy access key ask him if you can use it to try the game so you can see for yourself if you like it all not becuase after all its how you feel yourself about the game if you like it or not you should'ent need anybody else telling you what you should and should'ent like :)
The potential is where it should count July 3, 2008 Mr. B. Troke (The UK) 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
Ok, here is my honest impression of the game. It's fun, it tries something different, it looks beautiful if you have a computer that can run it from medium settings on up, and it has the potential for some of the best PvP conflicts in any game I have ever seen. The downside is that it's not quite there yet, I pre-ordered the collectors edition and I've had over a month of incredibly enjoyable gameplay. But I've also been frustrated by bugs, and the fact that some of the classes don't seem quite right yet, partly due to bugs and partly due to inefficient balancing from Funcom. If you want a perfect game my suggestion is to wait a few months more until the major issues have been ironed out and they start releasing new content packages (There are several new areas being opened up, as well as a consequence based PvP system in the works) If however you are prepared to forgive the game it's shortcomings you will have immense fun lopping heads and limbs off right and centre and immersing yourself in the wonderful world of Hyboria.
Superb game! June 18, 2008 superkrizz (Bergen, Norway) 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
The graphics are among the best I've ever seen, for all game types! The music and sounds make you feel you're really there - in Hyboria, and the gameplay is really fun. I also like the fact that the quests are much more "alive". In WoW, you don't even bother reading the quests texts, but here you are taking part in the conversation with the NPCs. The combat system is innovative, although I expected something even more groundbreaking. It's Wow - but with a cool twist. The downside: I had to buy a new graphics card to be able to play it, but then again, I needed a new one anyway ;) If you're doubting if this is for you - find a friend who has the game, and play 7 days for free. I think you'll opt for getting your own copy after those 7 days! When FUNCOM manages to remove the bugs, and integrate some of the missing features, this will be a total classic!
