Amazon.co.uk Review
A malevolent being called the NightCaster has cloaked the world in never-ending night, and monsters are stalking the land in increasing numbers. You play a young boy named Arran who is chosen by a mysterious orb to stop the encroaching evil. Arran spends the next several years learning magic, and when he returns to his home as a young man, he sees that evil has almost taken over everything. Now he must use his hard earned powers to fight back the evil and put an end to the NightCaster.

The name of the game is fighting endless hordes of monsters and gaining new magical spells. There are four schools of magic: water, fire, light and darkness and you can choose to specialise in a particular school. Magic affects the various creatures differently however, so you need to learn by trial and error which attacks are the most effective. Throughout the game, you unlock more powerful magic as you complete quests, and your character actually ages as the game progresses. By the end of the game, you are an old--and very powerful--wizard.

This game is good, but it has some flaws. NightCaster has the ability to switch between first and third-person views, but you automatically switch back to third person when you enter a fight, rendering a first player perspective useless. Also, while the game's talking tutorial is helpful, the voice sounds like TV Psychic Miss Cleo. Lastly, the monster design is lacking... the monsters look like cute little potato bugs and those snap-together plastic toys toddlers love. What's truly scary about NightCaster is how cuddly evil can be. The bottom line: NightCaster is a fun third-person action-RPG romp, perfect for a quick fix for hack 'n' slash cravings. --Bryan Karsh Amazon.com

5 out of 5 stars Nightcaster - fantasy wizardry   February 25, 2003

Night caster is an arcade action adventure game which has a great story line and nice angle. You play a boy who has chosen to leave behind his family and friends in order to save the world. He gradually becomes a great wizard and ages throught the game as he ploughs through monster after monster and solves the quests that his guide gives him. As time marches on he hears and sees his friends grow up never quite reaching them, whilst they wonder what became of him. The game is a bit of an rpg in that you start with very few spells and as you progress and find more items you become stronger and on completing certain tasks receive new spells or powers. The atmosphere of the game is fabulous. I felt for some of the characters around me and wanted to genuinely help them!! the music is haunting and it has a rare celtic charm about it. I was wrapped in this game and couldnt put it down until i finished it. The control system at first can be a bit off putting but when you get used to it which doesn't take long it will come naturally and you wont even think about it. The graphics are cute and the only real niggle about the game i can think off is that you spend most of your time killing monsters. The inbetween bits make up for this though. There are lots of save points about which is handy and you need to use them. There are some massive bosses in this like the ice king and a few dragons i put to rest. Overall not a difficult game but will require some patience. The ending left me feeling very rewarded and i thought it was just fantastic the icing on the cake. Definately worth trying in my opinion, especially if you like fantasy worlds and Celts!

2 out of 5 stars Wow what a shame   November 27, 2002

I bought this game with wild illusions of hope. It sounded really cool on the box cover, and I had read some rave reviews, but this has just not lived up to the hype. The main let down at the controls, being far too difficult to move, aim, find the right spall and fire all at the same time. I'm sure there are some out there who will find this no problem but I found it very difficult to do allt 4 things at once. The story line is cute, if you like that sort of thing, but does tend to get repetitive if you get lost. The creatures tend to be more blobs of one of the 4 different colours (puple, gold, red, and blue)and although there are some destinct creatures like wolfs and beetles, I'm not really sure what I am deafeating or why they should be after me. Most things are malignant and want to kill you, the reason for this is a little tenuous but this gives the game some appeal, you can attempt to destroy everything as the people on your side are indestructable. The game play is simple, and not really that addictive. The learning curve is steep, with multi disapline monsters coming at you fairly early requiring the near impossible actions of moving aiming spell cycling and casting to be done at the same time....... One for the die hard RPGers
