What were they thinking. Don't buy if over the age of 8 or you like flying games February 1, 2007 T. J. Smith (UK) 0 out of 8 found this review helpful
I read the other reviews on Amazon and decided to buy this game. I like flight sims, but I was not expecting a technically accurate flight simulator just an entertaining game. What was delivered was totally unexpected! The premise of the game is ludicrously silly; it is set in a fictional US of the 1930s or 40s, and the whole story line is infantile and quite frankly embarrassing. The game has as 12 rating which would seem to me to be in excess of the maximum age of anyone who could find the story line anything other than plain stupid. Still, it would not be the first game to have a silly storyline so let's not place too much emphasis on that. The graphics are generally pretty good, the planes are nice, but what variations there are don't seem to be fully exploited. The `zepplins' are hilarious; whoever put them in the game obviously had no concept of what keeps one of them in the air. They are routinely filled with planes and people who must be working in a hydrogen/helium environment. The real classic was the armour plated zeppelin; the quote from the `quirky' game dialog was `that thing must be covered in six inch armour plate'. I crashed my plane because I was laughing so much. What really spoilt it for me is that the second half turns in to Tomb-Raider with planes. What were they thinking? You can forgive the unrealistic aerodynamics of just about everything (gyro-copters that can hover?); you could also try and ignore the frankly juvenile and wholly unbelievable story line, but only if the rest of the game-play is up to it. Sadly, for me the rest of the game-play fell short, it does not compare at all to other flight games such as `Secret Weapons over Normandy'. One thing that still makes me laugh; the final mission you have to destroy yet another super zeppelin, one of the characters says in a very dramatic voice; `That thing is generating wind-tunnels', and your characters response is `No they are force five hurricanes'. Again, I crashed my plane laughing. How can a game about flying be produced by people who obviously know nothing about aircraft and it would seem to me that they didn't what to know which is why they turned the game in to Tomb-Raider half way through.
Plane fun June 27, 2006 jon davis (England) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
First of all, this is a brilliant game and a much needed flying game for the xbox. theres nothing really to compare this too? its just a really refreshing and original game, you play a pirate of sorts, not a nasty one but you have freedom to choose missions at your own pace, or you could just rob people... for fun mainly:) the sky is full of massive zepplins and other planes, and what beautiful skies they are, the only thing better than the graphics in this game is the sounds. everything just comes to life in this game, the planes sound great and the battles are epic. my only problem with this game is the controls, its adopded the same controls that all flying games get these days.. push the stick left and the plane turns left? it just isnt right. thankfully however, it seems to work for this game, probably because the game doesnt take its self too seriously. you cant really go wrong with this game, its brilliant from start to finish also has some imaginative bad guys thrown in for good measure. highly recommended
Wow! April 21, 2006 Tracy Okeeffe 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
This xbox game is absolutoly brilliant! You control a pilot called Nathan Zachary, in his cool fighter aeroplanes. The aim of the game is to complete the levels by helping your comrades by doing what they need you to do. Or, you just do as it tells you to do at the beggining of the level.Plus, you get to control turrets on certain points on a few levels.I rekon this beats heroes of the pacific by a mile!EXCELENT!
The best plane game on the box February 8, 2005 Slinky 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
To start with it is the best flight sim on the god box, period. For many that will be all you needed to hear. But the game claims this title by having many quirks other flight sims don't. To start with the game is fun! theres no worry about watching the horozion, wind speed, flap elevation etc, the controls are simple which means the player can settle right in and start enjoying the dog fights, and take offs and landings are handelled by the computer. So as long as you ain't looking for the right real deal sim, you'll like this. The boost feature is extremly satisfiying in a fast plane as you fly low on the deck dodgeing rock outcropping or buildings etc. As you can tell the story plays over a range off enviroments, which help keep the game from getting repetitive. You accumululate planes as the story progresses each with thier own weapon types and stats, so weather your a speed freak or a destruction junky you'll find one that suits. The missions are exciting with the option to operate gun emplacements which give it a whole new thrilling edge. The game is littered with intresting cut-scenes that keep the action going. The graphics are supurb throughout. Allthough the only downpoint is that despite all the efforts the game does get slightly repetetive towards the end, but is still a solid buy. The multiplayer aspect is great with the choice to fight amoung up to 16 players, no co-op though. But it is one to come back to. Enjoy
The real reason to buy an Xbox January 13, 2005 Touring Mars (London, UK) 7 out of 8 found this review helpful
Not owning an Xbox myself, I am on the verge of buying one after playing this game at a friends house. Playing against a couple of mates is great, but playing ALONG SIDE your mates against another bunch of folk on Xbox Live is absolutely majestic fun. Playing this game on a large wide-screen TV or using a projector redefines the Crimson Skies experience, and the graphics are more than up to challenge. The premise of the game is so pure and simple, that you can just jump straight in, no complicated instructions or weeks of practice (although it might help!), just strap yourself in to your favourite chair and you're off! A thrilling game and great multiplayer fun, either at home or over the web. Superb!
