Editorial Reviews:

Amazon.co.uk Review
When Luigi's Mansion was first announced many assumed it would be a title to follow in the legendary footsteps of Super Mario World and Super Mario 64. It's nowhere near as epic as either of these titles, though, and also unlike them will never be accused of being the "best game ever". Once you get over the shock of the game being on such a small scale, though, its various charms do become obvious. The game involves you, as Mario's brother Luigi, trying to exorcise a haunted mansion of ghosts by sucking them into a vacuum cleaner. If only Bill Murray and the Catholic Church had realised it was so easy. Except it's not really that easy at all: the complications and cleverness of the game come in with the use of light and shadow. Many ghosts cannot be seen unless you reveal their shadow or manipulate the objects in a room to make them appear. These imaginative--but never frustrating--puzzles add to the otherwise simplistic process of catching the smaller ghosts by freezing them with a beam of light and sucking them up the Hoover. It's only a minor classic but Luigi's Mansion does a good job of showing off some off the Gamecube's graphical effects and providing a game which all the family can enjoy. If only it was a bit longer... but then, knowing Nintendo, if it was longer it wouldn't have come out until the space year 3050.--David Jenkins

4 out of 5 stars Great game!   July 4, 2008
Snowy3 (UK)
This is one of the only games i have ever played through to the very end. It's true that for hard core gamers it probably wont take you too long to finish the game but its worth it for the journey!. There are lots of nice touches in this game e.g. the way Luigi whistles the theme tune! and the graphics are great(even when played on a Wii). The gameplay is simple enough once you get the hang of it and becomes a little harder against the 'portrait' ghosts where you have to think a bit more about when to attack. Make sure your controller will stand up to all the yellow C stick action as you suck those ghosts in!.

4 out of 5 stars A Great Little Game - one worthy of your collection if you are old or young!   February 26, 2008
Mr. S. W. Steel (England)
I am reviewing this game a long time after it's release date, so this i almost a retrospective look at the game.
You play Luigi and at the start of the game he has just inherited the mansion - and it isn't too long before we realise that the place is infested with ghosts and ghouls. Whilst doing the initial search through the mansion Luigi meets a mad profesor (are there any other types?), who gives him the equipment to dispatch the ghosts. Basically - it is a vacuum cleaner attached to Luigi's back! But we also discover that Mario came here before and is imprisoned somewhere in one of the rooms in the mansion...........and only Luigi can save him.
What follows is a very good, solid game. You play as Luigi and it is your job to clean out the place with his ghost busting vacuum cleaner. By finding the hearts of the ghosts, Luigi can suck the ghosts into the vacuum cleaner, and usually earn a key to another room in the mansion.
There are different strategies for different ghosts, and a few puzzles to be solved along the way. As you clear areas of the mansion, the lights come back on and Luigi doesn't whistle to himself in the nervous fashion he does when he is all alone in the dark with his torch. One of the keys you can press on the joypad makes Luigi shout out for his brother and depending on what room you are in this can come out as a normal cry, or a long drawn out nervous cry - it is even funnier to do this when Luigi has been shrunk down to miniature size!
Graphically, you can't fault the game. In game movies are not that much different from the game play. There is no major glitching either. The mansion itself feels solid enough, and the developers have dealt with a static camera very nicely.Luigi himself is very well done - green hat and gloves are all done well - and the walking movements and vacuuming actions are smooth.
In terms of gameplay it is very simple - the keys you have to learn are movement, and using the vacuum, and an examine feature in which you use the Gameboy Horror ( a nice touch) - but that is really it. This is a game with no run or jump features so anyone can pick it up and play skillfully within a few minutes.
The background music is very good too - just enough to give a creepy atmosphere, but not too much as to drown out the game action.
And so onto the bad points, and why i don't give this game 5 out of 5. Well, first of all it is pretty short. I completed this in under 8 hours on the first attempt. Secondly, the puzzles are very straightforward i.e. key a opens room a which leads to room b etc.... Secondly, there is no real reason to play it through again on the 'Hidden Mansion' mode. The mansion is basically put in reverse - a mirror reflection of what it was before. There are no real extras to speak of either.
Now, in the year of 2008 that is almost worthy of capital punishment - BUT this is a game that is quite old now. And for these flaws, i don't think they detract too much from the fun and the action. On the contrary, it was really nice to play a game that was 'old school'. I didn't feel a failure for not completing this through on both difficulty levels. In fact, i thought to myself ' That was a good, fun game - what shall i play next?'. Sometimes after giving a lot of hours over to a game you feel disgruntled that you wasted so much time on them. Luigi's Mansion, was short and sweet - packed with fun and nice touches. I really enjoyed it from start to finish. It won't blow your mind, but neither will it drive you mad - it is a good, solid game that is a diversion from the big, extra-laden games we play these days; and i for one appreciated the change!
I can't give this five stars as it isn't the perfect game. BUT - in terms of fun it gets five stars. Who would i recommend this too? Well, anyone over about 6. The controls and premise of the game are really easy to pick up and play. And the ghosts are not horrific at all - they are a cartoony-style that shouldn't frighten younger children. For adults, this is a nice break from hard-core gaming and a trip down memory lane to a time when games were simple and fun. I loved it!

5 out of 5 stars One of the games you must have for a gamecube   August 22, 2007
G. Allison
Luigis mansion is definaltely a must have for the Gamecube.
You Play Marios Brother Luigi who has won a Large Mansion, he rings Mario and they agree to meet their, yet when Luigi arrives Mario is nowhere to be found! He is then attacked by a ghost but is rescued by a small and weird scientist who gives him the Poltergeist 3000 used to suck up ghosts, and then Luigi sets of to find his Brother!

Graphics: 4/5 The graphics in Mario games are usually bright but obviously as this is in a haunted mansion they are more Dark and Gloomy, yet not in a bad way! And each room has a different touch to it.

Music/sound efects: 3/5 The music is good but not great you will hear the same background music many times, the sound effects are good, you hear Luigis footsteps, the rain and thunder from outside and a typical Vacumming sound for the Poltergeist 3000.

Gameplay: 5/5 I love the gameplay in Luigis mansion its all so easy to pickup and use! Almsot every room you enter their will be a specific Ghost and each has to be captured in a different way whether its making a musical melody or making a bath ice cold for that ghost. You also get elemental effects for your Poltergeist 3000 which are water, fire and ice and on some ghosts you'll need a specific elemental effect to defeat it. This game is all about fun their is nothing to get stressed at!. The only downside is that for experienced gamers its just to easy aswell as being kinda short

Replay value: 3/5 First time round this is a great game and you'll always be finding something new, but once you've completed the game theirs nothing much to come back for. Sure you can start again re-capturing but their are no more secrets to find and as you know what your doing you could probably finish it in 3 hours.

Overall: 5/5 Like I said this is definately a must have for the Gamecube with Luigi being the star instead of Mario, and with many different and funny ghosts to hunt down this should keep you going for a good 4 hours.

4 out of 5 stars Luigi!! The Lean Mean Green Machine To The Rescue!!!!   May 7, 2006

This was my first Gamecube game since I bought it alongside with the console itself back in May 2002!

Despite the games minor setbacks with the size and the strategy of the game! I felt that Luigi's Mansion was actually an enjoyable game and it got me on the go for a few hours or so! It is most probably one of a few games I own, in which I keep on erasing the data and keep restarting the game's progress! However, I have actually completed this game on Halloween night (31st October). The perfect night for a perfect game!

Here is how the story goes. In a competition he didn't even enter, Luigi wins a mansion, which is rumoured that it's haunted! Further more to this, Luigi and Mario decide to go and investigate. Mario obviously goes on ahead and leaves Luigi behind! Unfortunately Luigi gets caught up in a dark, ugly and frightening forest, which required his Flashlight in order to get through the passageway! In the end, Luigi passes through and discovers the Mansion! He then heads along and opens the main door! Entering the Mansion, he discovers the Living Room's Key and uses it to get inside the Living Room's door! Suddenly, without notice, a ghost appeared from nowhere and tries to attack Luigi, but then this scientist named Professor E. Gadd uses a Vacuum Cleaner to try and snatch the ghost. The ghost fled and Luigi and E. Gadd make a runner back to E. Gadd's Lab! Luigi was then given a briefing about the Mansion and E. Gadd said that he saw somebody whom looked just like Luigi, with a red cap and blue clothing whom just went into the Mansion and then got kidnapped by the ghosts! Luigi knew it was Mario on the spot, so they decide to team up and rescue Mario before the Mansion Vanishes!!

With the help of Professor E. Gadd, you will be supplied with a Poltergust 3000 Vacuum Cleaner from Gadd Scientist Incorporation, a Game Boy Horror, and a Flashlight, and with these fancy gadgets, you must journey through this horrifying, hilarious Mansion with Luigi and find out the mysteries of the Mansion, alongside rescuing Mario! Nobody knows what lies behind the doors of this Mansion and it is going to be one dark spooky adventure, so be prepared, and best of luck!!

Many people believe that Luigi's Mansion can be quite a spooky and scary game, but in reality, it is actually quite funny and enjoyable for all ages! Luigi's Mansion is known to be a short and graphical game, as if you were an occasional gamer, you could finish it within roughly 4 hours of playing!

My Personal Gaming Score: 8/10: Enjoyable, Fair-Play, Thumbs Up

My Wish: I find it extremely difficult in retrieving all the treasures and getting a Rank A when you've finished the game! But I'd admit that if the money, and treasures were in easy positions and places, this wouldn't be such a large issue!

Final Comment: Even though, Luigi's Mansion has it's downs, it has it's up's! Technically saying so, I've enjoyed this game far more than Super Mario Sunshine, since you will see Luigi sliding along the floor with the vacuum cleaner, rather than grabbing a paintbrush and re-painting that Mansion for good!!

5 out of 5 stars short and sweet   November 4, 2005

What lugi's won a mansion! there some kind of catch...well luigi has been set up by king boo the mansion is haunted and mario has been captured and banished in to a painting, it seems king boo is quite happy with his new peice of art work and he plans on adding a luigi painting to his collection also.

So luigi turns up to his new mansion and bumps in to a ghost catcher who informs him on the going on's and supplys you with your wepon for catching the ghosts responsible for trapping mario in a painting, the poltergeist 3000(a hover to a normal person). After quick training on how to catch a ghost luigi is on his way to explore the mansion and clear it of ghosts.

basicly the objective of the game is to clear each room of there ghosts when you catch all the ghosts in a room a chest will appear and reward you with a key alowing you to proceide further in to the mansion.Ghost catching is quite simple, most ghosts need to be startled before you can vacume them up you do this by shining you flash light on them this revels there heart and you power up you hover, to suck the ghost in to the hover you have to hold the c-stick in the same position to where luigi is standing to the ghost. Some ghosts require different tecniqes though and these ghosts will be killed by startling them with water, fire or ice. There are also quite a few ghosts that you need to collect so you can turn them in to paintings and put them in your gallery these ghosts will take alot more thinking in order to catch them but when you do figure it out you feel great, one of these ghosts is a very fat one stuffing his face with rice in order to catch him you suck up his rice and when the ghost waiter comes to replenish his plate suck him up, by now the fat ghost is getting hungury and then he blows his lid and its time for you to suck him up.

The boss battles are also well designed and fun they start off really easy but end up quite tricky, the ghost made up of 50 boo's owned me like 10 times, damm those boo's.

the graphic's are sweet, especially for a first generation gamecube game but the cartoony look is perfect for luigi's mansion, the sound also fits in perfectly giving you a slightly creepy feeling utill you clear a area.

luigi's mansion is a great game to kick off the gamecube era it is extremly fun and will keep you playing to the end.The game can be compleated in a few days for the hardcore but you average gamer will probably take a week or two (5-9 hours gameplay.

Overall i recomend this game for anyone looking for fun because this game is fun and will give you loads of enjoyment.
