Amazon.co.uk Review Long recognised as role-playing games par excellence, the Final Fantasy series gets a technological makeover in this instalment. Shedding the two-dimensional graphics and limited sound capabilities of its predecessors, Final Fantasy VII features lush 3-D graphics, beautifully animated "movie" sequences, and soundtrack-quality music. Coupled with the game's intricate storyline, endearing characters, and an immense yet highly imaginative world, these new advancements make for a quite an engrossing experience. The story of Final Fantasy VII centres around a solider named Cloud Strife, who joins forces with Avalanche, a group of resistance fighters, to take down an evil mega-corporation known as Shinra. (The fate of the world hangs in the balance, of course.) Truly epic in scope, this three-disc game requires a considerable amount of time to complete---this reviewer gladly gave up over 80 hours of his life to finish it. But it's definitely a rewarding adventure that every gamer should consider undertaking, especially since it's now one of the low-priced "Greatest Hits" titles. --Joe Hon, Amazon.com Pros: - Intricate and absorbing storyline with endearing characters
- Immense and highly imaginative game world
- Special battle system
- Beautifully animated movie sequences
Cons: - Your friends and family may feel neglected

I don't give five stars for many games, but... July 14, 2008 Dan Morgan-kane (U.K.) If ever there was a game worthy, this is it. If two-hundred and fifty-two reviews (about two-hundred and forty of which give a five-star rating), ten million units sold and countless spin-offs created to fill the hunger isn't reason enough to give this a bash, then you'd probably be better off selling your console. Final Fantasy VII (FF7) is heralded as the best RPG ever and one of the best games ever. I could go on forever about this game, but I'll try and keep it under two thousand. Visually, FF7 is ageing. There is no denying that it looks old by today's standards, but it still remains functional, fluid and (in the case of the FMVs and the battle sequences) quite something to look at. At the time, this game blew everything out of the water, and even when I come back to this game today, the graphics don't come close to getting in the way. The sound presentation was 'done' on the inbuilt sound chip on the PlayStation (which was the 80's sounding MIDI standard), to save space, and unfortunately, it is a hindrance on Nobuo Uematsu's (the composer's) efforts. However, what it does demonstrate, is how good the soundtrack is anyway; and years after it's release, the MIDI soundtrack still sells well. It is quite hard to get across (without listening to it) how brilliant it really is. Memorable, catchy tunes will ring in your ears for years. The battle system is a simple one. Up to three of your allies can fight at a time, commanded by you, and they have to engage in random and plot-developing battles throughout the game. The random sequences can be a bit of a drag at times, but it doesn't really detract from the overall experience. The way your characters fight is quite something; you get to equip a weapon, armour and an accessory. You can add 'materia' (magic) to those items to make you stronger, weaker, give you powers and summon monsters. The way in which you can develop your characters and the materia itself is quite deep and immersive. You could be there for hours tweaking your set-up. The plot and character development is where this game stands strongest though. All of the main characters have a purpose. Despite all the goings on, all of the characters are human. You will love these characters, and care for their hearts. This is a video game; we're supposed to play Pac-Man and Desert-Strike and ride skateboards. We're not supposed to cry for, laugh at and love the main characters. Final Fantasy was instrumental in changing that. The story is so thick, it's a wonder anyone was able to swallow it. Honestly, after nearly ten years of playing the game, I'm still discovering things about it that I didn't know. It starts out with Cloud Strife, the main character, fighting for AVALANCHE, a resistance group fighting against the SHIN-RA Corporation, who are draining the world's resources at an unsustainable, but unswerving rate. But before long, you'll be swept up in the epic tree of plots and sub-plots that can go on forever if you let it; before you know it, you'll be delving deep into the hearts of many characters and discovering so much more than any Street Fighter game and movie-to-video-game port can offer you. FF7 laughs in their faces and says, 'Is that all you've got?'. It is truly something to behold. Many people love this game for many reasons, but just know that when you purchase this game, you're not just getting a piece of entertainment, you're getting a virtual world, waiting for you to explore it; you're getting characters, waiting to grow and heal their hurts; and you're getting the most compelling, deep and purposeful video game in quite possibly the industry's history. Welcome to Final Fantasy VII, enjoy your stay.
A classic that would benefit from an update. July 7, 2008 genejoke (uk) This is a great game, like all japanese rpgs they are not for everyone but those that get them are in for a treat. Sadly playing this over ten years on, and on a large plasma screen tv, it does look dated. The design is still good but the large screen really highlights the difference ten years can make in graphics. Hence my comment about it needing and update, sharpen the visuals a little and voila. Anyway the game, why is it the best final fantasy? is it the characters? maybe, is it the story ? maybe. I think it is the setting it is beautifully designed and varied, the later FF games while very pretty they do not have the variety. The worlds are more limited and seem less fantastic.
first rpg is final fantasy VII July 4, 2008 F. MORANGE (bradford uk) well i wasn t always a fan of final fantasy , and i got the game by accident ...it was a bargain 6,99 same for ff8 at colchester in 1999 maybe 2001 cant remember now but at the time i was more resident evil, silent hill ,or duke nukem on pc... so it was a bit of a surprise when i start this game with grotesque hexagonal 3 d i pest against it for a while ,but soon i got hold of the control and began to see the adventure rolling before my eyes and it was great first the use of the first eon (ff8) and it was ifrit and i though it was attacking me and then that was it i was hooked i try other rpg ,some very good ,but nothing compare to the final fantasy serie , and final fantasy 7 ,8 ,9 ,10 and 6 are the best of the serie and i can play many time again which i seldom do with the other rpg exept maybe parasite eve which is a square production by the way =)
Final Fantastic!!! June 30, 2008 Mr. J. Gorton (England) Ive had this game for over 10 years now, its my most cherished possession it is that good. No scratches on it or nothing, its pure brilliness!! This is the most epic of Final fantasies in the whole collection (and i have the whole collection). I just completed Crisis core recently so i can make more sense of the story line on this game but its not that hard to realise what happens, just tiwts in that particular story can be confusing for some. I would advise anyone who like RPG to get this game and it has been rated 3rd best game by Game.
Comparison with FF7 June 19, 2008 Tsu Y. Nieh (UK) First, to be clear, I started to play final fantasy series with FF7 after I played other RPG games such as Diablo and wizardry etc... I have enjoyed all those great games but the experiences with FF7 were phenomenal. I got the game when it was just released in the U.K and FF7's graph design was the greatest among all of the RPG games at the time. However, this review is not about how good this game is, if you want to know how wonderful this game is, read other 200+ positive reviews in Amazon. I would like to point out some fact that some reviewers think FF is not a true RPG games and not enough controls and game play e.g. D&D or Diablo. That is your own opinions and I am not holding that against you. In my personal opinion, all of them are great games and normally you cannot try to mix them up and try to cover every feature from all those games like Star Ocean 3 or FF12 are trying to do. (In fact, with all the bad reviews to FF12, I actually think that game has achieved a big step towards the goal.) Every game has their advantages and we players should keep it open minded because if you are not, you just cannot appreciate the fun part those games are trying to provide to us. For example, FF7 is actually combing pretty good storyline, good characteristics with each role in the game and the game play is fine but with almost no replay value and some of the scene is tedious if you watch it the second time, (especially the part with half hour wasted to state the relationship with Cloud and Sephiroth, that you have to play through it.) My point is that you need to know what the games are trying to bring to you. If you are seeking to have more game play with little role playing, Diablo type game is your game (it also have amazing replay value). If you are seeking skill and character development, you can try Might and Magic, Ultima or Wizardry series. For final fantasy series, they are usually providing a good story, good role playing and game system is normally pretty good. In fact, they are so popular that Square Enix is treating the game is their main force for every new one coming out and they spent so much time and money for them and each of them will have their merit and I think somewhere in the future they will produce a game that contains many good point from other games under their arsenal e.g. great replay value in the future (like star ocean 3), even better game playing and character development (FF11) and again, less frustrating puzzle solving and crazy bosses that require constant repetition to defeat (D**n the Penance). FF7 is arguably the best in the series, in my opinion. The reasons are: 1. Huge graphic improvement from the other previous RPG games. How many PS1 games you can say "it still looks amazing" after you play so many other PS2 level games? FF7 is the innovation of the FF series in terms of graphic design. 2. Greatest character of all time. I think Cloud is pretty cool for our hero type that struggle with his light and evil part of personality and trying to figure out what he is trying to do in...well, his fantasy life (seems pointless at time, just to kill the big bad). However, the big bad in FF7 is the greatest of FF series if not all the RPG games, the great Sephiroth. There are no words to describe the greatest evil of all, please play the game to find out how fallen angel should look like. 3. All the commands, magic and summon are very interesting and able to play with part in the game. A lot of other games making some of the skills or magic very pointless that you will never use in any part of the game. FF7 used all the commands to improve its game play and actually I think it has the best game play value in all the FF series. 4. Like all the FF series, FF7 provide some good secret items for you to find out and the mini games are not too tedious to play and they actually give you enough hints to know what to pursuit, unlike some stupid quest in some later series (how the "$% $ do you know NOT to open certain chests to get the Zodiac spear). 5. Storyline is the best in the series. Might not be as touching as Yuna and Tidus' forbidden love but comet hitting Earth has much more urgency than big Monster wondering around in the Sea every 10 years. I understand Square Enix has developed so many other games based on the successes of FF7 but they are mostly profit driven. I hope they can produce a game in the future truly capture the greatness from this great game and improve its replay value (maybe second play through can have more difficult monsters and inherent previous experiences point and more skill development in second play through). More skill development during the game and assign better jobs for each character that actually I think FF4 and FF9 did the best, which is one of a few plus points in the game. Game play can be better, I thought Gambit system was great, but not the character you are controlling. It makes players sleepy. Higher evasion or blocking rate for the super bosses rather than 10000000000 HP point taking 10 hours to hit it over and over again and see the same move every 2 minutes. 3 vs 200x20 is always more fun than 3 vs 1x40000. Final opinion, ff you can, not only get FF7, which is the greatest, get all 13 of them and understand why FF series is so popular for so long. You should have more fun with each one of them after the 1500 hours of playing. (Apologies to wives or mothers if your children or husband stick to the games for too long because of my opinion.)
