5 out of 5 stars Cannon 4400F - Excellent product   October 2, 2008
P. J. M. Mackrell (Hampshire, UK)
CanoScan 4400F Scan with Quality & Versatility
In one word, this product is "superb".
I was given a slide / negative converter for my birthday. This item was a lightbox, being a tall box, with a negative / slide holder. The results were awful, with totally burnt out slides and poor quality negatve prints. It was cumbersome to use and not at all user friendly. Luckily, we persuaded the supplier to give a refund.
The Canon 4400F, in contrast, gives amazing results, with accurate exposures and colours. It is easy to use and I can fnd no faults with it. The only downside is a bulky unit, which if you have a scanner already, does take up extra space on your work surface. However, this is a small price to pay, and I unplug and store the unit when not in use. I recommend the 4400F, without reservation, and wonder why anyone would buy a higher specification model. The price is a bargain and delivery from Amazon came within a couple of days. The transfer to digital is fairly fast and the software supplied very straightforward. I now have the pleasant task of unearthing all my old negatives and slides and sorting out the ones I wish to trasfer to digital, before creating photobooks to display those old memories.

5 out of 5 stars Does what it says on the tin   September 26, 2008

This device does what it's designed to do - no fuss, no complications, just slick operation straight out of the box. I use it with my Mac Book for scanning old 126 slides and it makes a tiresome (but worthwhile) task fairly pain-free if tackled in bite-sized chunks. The supplied software is intuitive and the build quality is high - in short it's very good value and highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Nowhere near the other reviews depict   August 19, 2008

This is definitely a good scanner, no question, its got alright quality and is quite cheap for a scanner. But it had some drawbacks.
- difficult to keep clean
- too long, not wide enough
- unnecessary buttons
- short cables
- can glitch (making a non-stop irritating, high pitch scream)

But of course, if you can overlook these small problems its fine, quick scanning, light weight and has a decent adjuster for the lid (to scan books and larger items) A general scanner, not for anyone in fine art.

5 out of 5 stars Memories preserved   July 31, 2008

Relying on other Amazon reviews, I bought this with the requirement of scanning the 700 odd slides that my father took of my and my three siblings' childhood. I am really pleased with the performance of the scanner in the following ways:
1. It works with Photoshop on my old Mac
2. Speed is OK - about 8 minutes to scan 4 slides at 2400 dpi
3. Quality is excellent - so good that it really points up the inadequacy of the camera my dad used!
4. The Canon scanner interface is really easy to use - and has useful additions like features like an anti-fade button

Some of the slides have some mould on them and some have faded quite badly, so its good to know that they will now be preserved and will now be available for us all.

CanoScan 4400F Scan with Quality & Versatility
I'm delighted with this scanner, I hadn't used one before and it's very easy to use with good software. The buttons on the front of the scanner do quick scans in pdf format (photos, written documents etc)and scanned documents can be linked directly to email or a printer to get a copy.

The software allows you to scan images in as jpeg files (better quality images but a bit slower to do). I've used this to copy dozens of mounted slides of photos taken in the 1960's,and then I've edited them in photoshop, but you can use the provided software. It's all very straightforward. I would recommend this to anyone wanting digital images of photos from prints or negatives, the quality is excellent.

It will take 4 mounted slides or a strip of negatives, it's time-consuming to do a lot of photos but well worth the effort.
