Good mid-range laptop May 15, 2008 R. J. Salusbury (Winchester) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
For its more than agreeable price, this is good mid-range laptop. Having 2GB of RAM it manages to cope well with Vista. It comes pre-installed with a free 90 day trial version of Norton Anti-virus, although this can be uninstalled and replaced with a free anti-virus package (Avast, AVG etc). It also has `Acer Arcade' installed which is more or less a carbon copy of Windows XP Media Centre which is also installed... The screen display is very good. It comes with a built in webcam and microphone. It is a little bulky in size, but given the built in features, price and sizable HD (160GB) this is expected. It does not come with any back-up discs so I strongly recommend that 30 minutes is set aside to make a full system and driver `factory settings' backup, using the installed Acer Empowering Technology, before doing anything. Three DVD-R are required and from past experience this could prove to be time well spent. On the whole, for its price this is a good quality laptop. Edit: Having had this laptop for a few weeks now, I can confirm that the real let down with it is the sound card. Despite being Dolby Home Theater enabled (wow), the sound quality (even when hooked up to a Denon amplifier) is absolutely AWFUL, DREADFUL, APPALLING etc, etc. It really is quite shocking that Acer decided to completely ignore installing a quality sound card in an era where most people use their PCs for playing a whole host of multimedia applications. If you'd have bought a PC with a soundcard of this quality 15 years ago you'd have been satisfied. But in the year 2007/08 it really is unacceptable. If you use your Laptop for listening to music, IGNORE THIS LAPTOP and buy something with a decent soundcard. 2 stars deleted (Amazon does not give the option to amend 'star' ratings when editing reviews).
WiFi problematic May 9, 2008 Mr. J. G. Barkley 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
A lovely looking laptop with loads of extras. BUT I miserably failed to connect up to my wifi network and also failed to connect to other networks. On doing a search of the internet I found that this wasn't an isolated problem with this model and there seemed to be no advice anywhere on what to do. After 4 solid days of trying to sort out this problem I gave up and sent it back for a refund. I have another Acer laptop - different model - which I've had no problem with at all and even took on a 2 month holiday with me to the USA . But that runs on Windows XP. I think Vista is part of the problem here.
Where's the cd?? May 9, 2008 H. Ferreira (uk) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
I bought this notebook a few days ago and i must say it is quite good for it's price! I'm happy with the performance and the looks and althouh it's processor is not the fastest, it does the job. All in all it's a very nice machine. The only this that i'm not happy about is that it did not come with a windows vista installation cd or a recovery cd!! is it normal?? i don't think so! anyone else had this problem? if so please let me know, i would like to know if it's actually missing! Thanks For that it gets 4 stars

Buyer beware April 28, 2008 Hillabaloo 12 out of 15 found this review helpful
I have been very unhappy with my Acer laptop. It has had 4 motherboards due to overheating. Customer service is attrocious. I chose the laptop because it seemed to offer value for money, so beware.
