A great external Hard Disk October 6, 2008 John Nunn (Coventry, U.K.) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
A superb external HDD, the array of conections means this drive can be used on virtually any computer straight out of the box, it is a real shame that an eSATA cable is not included where as both USB and Firewire cable are in the box. The device is very much plug and play with no drivers needed. I have got one of these of these attached to my development PC and use it for storing Virtual PC images and as a scratch disk for animation work as well as video editing. The included eSATA interface means the performance is good enough to run applications or virtual machines from.
eSata problem solved September 24, 2008 Pete (England) For a long time I could not get my computer to recognise this disk on the eSata connector. I finally solved it by trimming down the outer collar of the eSata lead with a scalpel. It seems the MyBook case would not allow my eSata lead to enter fully to make contact. I trimmed of about 2.5mm all around and voila. I hope this helps someone. Otherwise a nice quiet drive. Let me reinforce what others have said - any manufacturers drive can fail so BACK UP IMPORTANT DATA TO A DIFFERENT DEVICE and if it is really important keep a copy in another building.
Problematic Firewire September 18, 2008 Tsonix (Sheffield, United Kingdom) 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
I got the 'Home' edition to take advantage of a (faster than usb2) firewire connection. In a nutshell, this drive cannot connect to a Mac via Firewire. You can google to find several people with the same problem on WD drives. The drive connects ok with usb2, not with firewire. The drive itself is not 'defective', I have managed to connect it via firewire by daisy-pairing it to a lacie firewire drive. It all points to a firewire power issue... Firmware upgrade did nothing, unplugging the mac & all devices for 20 minutes did nothing. I have yet to try other suggestions like PRAM reseting. But seriously... is WD asking users to be reseting PRAMs and unplugging devices etc.. just to connect the drive?? My lacie drive works fine out of the box, take notice WD... Again, this drive will not connect 'out of the box' to a mac via firewire. I recommend going for the usb2 only version, or another brand if you do want firewire on a mac.
Not the easiest thing to set up! August 22, 2008 Sparky Matthews (Lancashire, England) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
First things first, I am not a technophobe. Nor am I a computer whizz kid. I place myself in the middle, Mr Average when it comes to all things that require input from the National Grid to get them whirring. I bought this drive so that my main computer would not get bogged down with the storage demands of thousands of high quality music tracks (the high quality bit refers to the file size, not the quality of this author's musical tastes). On connecting the drive to the computer via USB, the PC would not boot into Windows (I have good ole XP). Disconnecting the drive solved the problem. Bit of a small problem that, having to manually plug in the drive every time you wanted to use it, I thought. After trawling through the Western Digital website I came across a fix. Apparently with many PCs, the USB Legacy has to be disabled in order for ones PC to boot into Windows when the drive has been attached. Quite a technical thing to do when these drives are supposed to be Plug and Play. The good news is that I managed to circumvent this problem, so 99.9% of the Amazon buying population should be able to do the same. Since connecting the drive, I've had no problems whatsoever - it really is a massive amount of disk space 1TB! Recommended!
Great Hard Drive August 15, 2008 Mr. L. Lewis (Scotland) This My Book 2 Home Edition is a great hard drive with good quality at a nice price. I connect it to my Imac G5 using firewire and the transfer and streaming speeds are fine. It runs really quiet and if you leave it on all the time then it will spin down after being idle for a while as well as turning on and off with your computer. The light on the front is only really annoying in the evening as its in my bedroom but you just have to push the power on the back for it to completely turn off. Very happy with this product!
