Top quality drive but you will need to buy additional playback software July 20, 2008 elyoh (UK) 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
**Update** The bundled software, Power DVD 7.3, does not support Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound as this software is the OEM version. 2 channel sound only is supported. This is a major disappointment as upgrading to Power DVD 8 costs about 60 and you will lose the ability to play HD DVD if you do this (unless you install 7.3 and 8 side by side which is supposed to be possible). The supplied software was a major reason I bought this drive and I would now rate it a 4 stars not 5. This is possibly the current best Bluray drive on the market. It writes/reads to Bluray, DVD, CD and reads HD DVD so if you have any movies in this now defunct format you can still watch them. Writing speeds are excellent. The drive has light scribe functionality but I haven't tried using it. The kit comes with a BD-RE disc so you can burn a Bluray data disc straight away. The bundled software is superb. Cyberlink software is provided for burning DVDs, CDs, Bluray Discs. Cyberlink PowerDVD 7.3 is provided for playback. The player and drive is fully compatible with Bluray video Profile 1 and 1.1 (bonus view) as well as HD DVD (an update of about 75mb from the Cyberlink site was needed to get the player working fully - ensure you update the software when prompted and bookmark the link for future reference as it's hard to find later!) The provided software separately would set you back about 40-70 so it's excellent that it's included. Full backward compatability with DVD, CD and HD DVD, high speed burning, bundled software at this low price make this drive stand out from all the rest. Superb.
The future April 4, 2008 The milkman (Down your street) 9 out of 9 found this review helpful
This is a full retail boxed kit and comes complete with playback software. The Cyberlink suite makes it simple to watch bluray disks. It will write to BD-R and BD-RE single layer 25GB disks. The dual layer 50GB (and also 100GB, 200GB disks) will be out later in the year. I've only just started using this as i only got a few days ago but the results are very impressive playing back through my PS3.
Nice item March 17, 2008 prince (England) 16 out of 18 found this review helpful
As the others, yes nice drive, decent software Cyberlink hi-def suite with the retail version too which is lacking with some drives, this drive writes blu ray but the GGCH i think it is only plays blu ray, mission finding that out!! Other thing to mention is it doesn't upscale dvd's like a lot of blu ray players do, other than that it is very nice, looks a lot better than the pioneer one that came with my new pc, blu led too which is a nice touch & matches my new setup, if it upscaled I would give it 5 but as that feature is missing to get better picture from your dvd collection means getting yet another blu ray player so it's only 4 this time.
Its a winner! March 7, 2008 Mr. D. C. Quick (Liverpool) 11 out of 11 found this review helpful
The HD BluRay battle is over but this drive supporting both formats is still a winner. It's clearly the best buy on the market well speced and good compatibility.
The next generation of Blu-Ray / HD Drive January 16, 2008 Mr. S. Jeyes (The west side) 15 out of 16 found this review helpful
This writer not only does Blu-Ray writing and playback but it is also has HD playback. With the war raging between Blu-Ray and HD I'm cover whichever way it goes. This drive is also backwards compatible with DVD and CD. This is the best speced and priced drive on the market, believe me I'm looked!
