Not Good October 6, 2008 Benny92 (UK) i purchased the 250gb model and for around 5 months it was great, stored everything I wanted with speed and efficacy, then one day it started making a clicking and churning noise then two days later became unreadable and I lost all of my data after asking a computer repair man if he could retrieve anything he said that it was unlikely and would cost 100 more than the product cost to begin with!
Excellent! (...It's not always the drive that's the problem). October 3, 2008 GB (Surrey, U.K.) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I'm just about to purchase my third one of these drives. The other two have given faultless service over the past 18 months. I connect the drives to my PC using a 4 port USB2 hub and have encountered some of the problems from earlier reviews (drive not recognised, failed to power up, etc). However, a little patience and thinking things through revealed things such as: - faulty USB lead - fuse blown in the plug(!) - loose USB socket on PC (probably from over-use...hence the hub I now keep permanently connected - USB lead not connected properly (just remove...leave a few seconds and then try again) I did not re-format my discs when purchased and they worked straight out of the box...no problem. There may be faster external drives out there, but key for me is reliability. And these have been 100% reliable.
Do not buy October 2, 2008 Ian (Wales, UK) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT. Plenty of people have left great reviews for this drive and if I had left one after a month, I would have left a great one too. However, having used it for a year and after having umpteen problems with it, I would heartily discourage anyone from buying it. The drive seems to have an in-built design fault that leaves it susceptible to I/O errors and partition failure. Your computer will fail to recognise it as a hard drive and will think it is just a piece of USB hardware. This prevents it appearing in Drive Management and in My Computer. Western Digital appear useless on this and their Support cannot help. The only positive thing I can say is that it has a two-year warranty. However, isn't it disappointing that the best thing I can say about it is, when it breaks, you can return it and get a refurbished one from another chump instead?
I must be a 'dimwit' September 29, 2008 D. Smith (Doncaster, S. Yorkshirs United Kingdom) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Had I reviewed this drive within a month of purchase I would have given it 5 stars. Unfortunately it has recently become a cold block of metal without a sign of life. Fortunately I was only using the drive for backup so I still have my files and records on my Mac's HD and I can purchase a different backup drive. Apparently I am a dimwit because my drive is now inoperative but having lingered over the fair number of google links, advice sites and the WD home site no one seems to be able to shed any light on this problem. I guess that, not being a professional photographer, I just can't understand all of them really big words wot get used on dis internet thingy. Anyone want to buy a doorstop?
Brilliant 500 GB hard drive for 50 September 27, 2008 jayd47 (Chester, Cheshire, UK) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I received my Western Digital Elements 500GB on the 29 of August 2008 and it just works great with my Mac, I use it to back up my entire computer using the Time Machine. I've had no problems at all using it and I did read other people reviews before I purchased mine but I don't think I spotted any reviews using a Mac. So if you have a Mac this is the perfect partner for you to back you computer using Time Machine, not sure about a PC because I do not have one.
