A pocket wonder September 24, 2008 Tom Douglas (Oxford, United Kingdom) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
This hard disk drive is not much bigger than a mobile phone - 12.6cm x 7.9cm x 1.5cm - and holds a whopping 250Gb. This makes is the perfect back-up drive that you can take with you. I carry mine in my laptop bag, so that should my laptop hard disk fail I have all my data with me and can still work. Assuming I can borrow a PC or laptop that is. At home it can sit in a drawer and, if you want to pop round a friends house and share some tunes, it will sit in your pocket without causing an embarrassing bulge. I have been using Western Digital for years and have never had any technical problems - I simply upgrade for capacity. The one negative is the bundled sync software. It's a dog and is best avoided. Search for syncback on Google and you will find a great backup utility that is free for the basic version and very cheap for the full version. The final point about My Passport Essential is the wonderful choice of colours. No more dull grey or matt black technology, these drives are busting with colour. Great technology, very reliable, huge choice of colours and very keenly priced. Five stars.
Little drive but big use. July 17, 2008 F. Cargnin 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
This is such a good little drive. I love the design. It's simple, rounded corners and has a white LED in form of a USB symbol that blinks when transfers are taking place. It came formatted for Windows with some preloaded software that I couldn't test because I use a MacBook Pro. I used OS Xs Disk Utility to partition it as a GPT drive and it's working great. I bought this drive primarily because of Time Machine. I leave the drive connected to a powered USB 7-port HUB and haven't had any problems so far. My Mac is backed up completely and I feel safe because I've heard that Western Digital HDDs are usually reliable. This drive fits in my shirt's pocket if I ever want to take it with me and it's somewhat light compared to others on the market. I think that that's due to the plastic being used for the cover instead of metallic materials but I'm not too sure. I paid 59 pounds for it on July 11th and it seems that it's 64 pounds now (July 17th)! Such a great deal. Have I said that the drive is very silent? Yes, it is indeed. I don't know how long it's going to last, but it gives me a sense of quality at least, and it's not expensive. I've been buying from Amazon since about a year and they've been great! I'd definitely recommend both Amazon and this portable HDD.
Perfect For Time Machine On A MacBook May 15, 2008 Alan (United Kingdom) 17 out of 17 found this review helpful
I just bought a white My Book Passport Essential for use with a white Apple MacBook laptop. Western Digital have clearly been inspired by Apple's design, what with the drive's heavily rounded corners, white USB cable and white power light. It seriously looks as if it was created as a companion product for the MacBook, by Apple themselves, which is great. The drive is very very tiny, at just 12.5 cm in width, and 1.5 cm in depth. Very portable, manageable, and easy to pick up. The drive also runs whisper quiet, which is very unusual for an external hard drive. Western Digital's other products, such as the My Book Essential and Studio, have an annoying habit of "spinning down" and "spinning up" again, throughout the day. But this My Book Passport drive is sublimely silent. Ahhh, silence! Annoyingly, the product packaging comes loaded with references to Windows and very little mention of Mac OS X. There's mention of the "Windows only WD Sync software". Labels stating "Works with Windows Vista" and "Designed for Microsoft Windows XP and 2000". All Mac users get is an out-of-date Finder logo. Thanks Western Digital. The drive works flawlessly with Mac OS X Leopard's Time Machine software. Who needs "WD Sync" anyway when you have Time Machine. Just set it and forget it. Time Machine automatically makes a copy of EVERYTHING on your MacBook's internal hard drive and stores it on the My Book Passport. Time Machine automatically updates the copy EVERY hour, provided the My Book Passport is connected. It's a very cool system. Not only does Time Machine keep everything CURRENTLY on your MacBook, it keeps changed and deleted files, going back in time. Overall, this is a very satisfying product and perfect for use with Time Machine. I just wish Western Digital's packaging was updated to reflect CURRENT Apple technology, not Apple from 10 years ago!
