Hitachi - consistently the tops September 10, 2008 Andrew Shaw (UK / Kuwait) 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
This is the 3rd generation of Deskstars (IBM and Hitachi) I've bought - they have all been outstanding, consistently top of the pile. You can see the speed comments below - the best; my 1st 1TB drive is in a near airtight external enclosure, quiet and trouble free (I'm about to buy another); easy to set-up. Over 13 years all others (Seagate, Maxtor and others) have suffered catastrophic failures in normal use. I now only buy Deskstars.
Excellent bit of kit. August 9, 2008 Cookie (Reading, UK) 11 out of 11 found this review helpful
I bought this drive after a lot of research because it was quiet, a good price and was getting good reviews. It's currently the backup drive for my VISTA PC, but will get moved into a RAID array as soon as I find an array that works out of the box! It took 5 mins to install and start using, including fitting it into the external drive enclosure I bought at the same time. The easy way to get this running is to go to the Windows disk manager, select the drive, click on initialise (as MBR), and when that's done select 'create a simple volume' and tick 'quick format'. If you don't select quick format, you'll be waiting hours for the format to finish! The drive is quiet, fast, added a huge bucket of storage to my system and I'm really pleased with it. I can't comment on reliability as I've only had it running for a few hours.
An all round winner! June 11, 2008 M. Lupton (Leeds) 23 out of 23 found this review helpful
As I needed four drives to put in NAS box and it was quite a big investment I did a fair amount of research before committing to the Hitachi drive. I came across a review website "storage review" the review on the main part was comparing three WD drives and two Seagate drives but also documented were the Hitachi results. The Hitachi wiped the floor with the others. A number of the tests looked at how each drive handled the latest games at the time World of Warcraft. ...FarCry....Sims 2... again the Hitachi came out on top. Lastly the Hitachi also came out on top for least power consumption. This review and a number of other glowing reviews I found on the Hitachi drive made it clear that this drive complete with a 3-year warranty was the one for me. What's more at this price with free freight, Amazon was the cheapest I could find on the Hitachi drive!
Good value and reliability June 10, 2008 Mr. S. Jeyes (The west side) 18 out of 18 found this review helpful
I bought this Hard Drive as my old 250GB was getting a little full. I am a bit of a novice but this was very easy to replace my second drive. Four screws and two cables later and it was swapped over in no time. The format took a while but that was to be expected with a Hard Drive of this size. Excellent choice, tons of space and ample fast enough for my movie files. I've had three hard drives now, all Hitachi and never had any problems
