5 out of 5 stars First Impression Good   November 17, 2008

I have just taken my Freecom 320GB XXS out of its packaging and am amazed that so much power can be packed into such a tiny, well-designed unit. It really is an impressive little gadget. Very tactile in its protective sleeve and virtually silent in operation. With Mac OS X there's no set-up to do, you just plug it in, transfer the manuals into your documents folder, delete them from the Freecom (hope that was the right thing to do) and you're ready to go. There's one folder left on it called 'System Volume Information'. I'm not quite sure what that is so have left it on the HD just in case. On the packaging it says this tiny thing can store 215,000 Jpegs -amazing.

4 out of 5 stars Quite good   October 25, 2008

Just got the Freecom. Although it says 320gb you really get about 300gb of storage. But thats true for all drives. Its quiet in operation and is recognised quickly by Windows when you plug it in. I have to say that the supplied usb cable is really short approx 9cm. And i was surprised about the rubber case. It is basically a rubber casing covering a bare drive. I.e. if you take it out of the rubber casing you see the actual hard drive! Read/write performance seems good..not sure how it compares to other drives though.

5 out of 5 stars brilliant!   October 19, 2008

After months of research, I recommend this product to everyone who wants big storage capacity in a small size at a great price. It's nearly as small as an iPod Classic. The Rubbery outer case seems odd at first but feels really good (Please ignore the other moaners who reviewed this product). Its much better than the WD Passports which scratch and which you cannot use on Apple laptops. The lead is slightly short, but has never been a problem for me. I use it on an Apple Mac... the only thing is you have to stick it in directly in the computer rather than a USB extension port. The price is brilliant too - which seems to go down every week... so grab yourselves a bargain. I'm extremely happy with it. Its my new best friend!

4 out of 5 stars Small, plain but beautiful!   October 16, 2008

OK, the worst bit about this drive I'll get out of the way straight away... the USB cable, great if you have a Laptop, but for someone who is using this as a "take your files with you drive", this cable is just plain ridiculous. And although it's harsh to do this, a star is lopped off straight away for this, these cables are cheap to produce, and providing such a small cable is such a bad decision for what is otherwise a wonderful little drive!

From the Mac perspective this a must buy! For around 66 you get a bootable drive... which means you can install the OS + some utilities + use the drive for backup files or for files you wish to work with on the road!

It's not a speed demon, but it certainly isn't slow either writing a folder of around 1.57GB in under 2 minutes.

I have used various different drives from different manufacturers and this drive is one of the best portables I have ever used!

There isn't much more to say about this drive, it's simply very, very good, just budget for a longer cable or a decent extender (not all of them will carry the power enough to make the drive function).

This would make an ideal Christmas present for the Mac user in your life!

4 out of 5 stars very good, with some flaws   September 25, 2008

This is a great product, It works like a charm, no problems at all, connect and ready to go. The capacity is massive, you can store a huge number of songs, photos, and other digital content. It is very silent, which is quite good. I am using it with a laptop running XP SP2, and so far not a problem. It is very small, smaller than WD's Passport Drive. It looks stylish, nice black finish. So the good points are: great capacity, fast connection, easy to use, no installation or separate power supply required.
Things I did not really find good: the USB cable provided is ridiculously short, I mean this is completely useless. My USB ports are close to the laptop fans, so no matter how good the cooling capacity of the drive is, it will still be positioned near the fan, getting all the hot air out of the laptop, and thus increasing its heat. This is not good, and the only solution is to get a longer USB cable.
2nd Point: the build quality seems ok, but not impressive. It does not feel very solid. The build quality in WD's Passports is better.
Anyways, this is a very good hard drive, I am happy with it, and the USB cable issue is not a big one, but would have been nicer to have it all in a perfect package. I would totally recommend this drive, definitely very portable and essential for everyone who likes to keep this files with them wherever they go.
