Died within 2 months December 2, 2008 Steve (Derbyshire, UK) Do not buy. True, the features people are raving about are there -it's quite quick and it is quiet but this unit completely packed up within 2 months. Customer service terrible. Return to Seagate at your own cost (plus insurance) is standard as is replacement with a factory re-conditioned drive. No thanks, I'll buy another one and I'll get something better than this.
Mac users beware November 23, 2008 T. Kalkhoven I bought one of these hard drives about two months ago. Immediately I found a problem which seems to be common on the tech support forums for mac users: the drive goes to sleep every 30 seconds, making it totally useless if you want to edit any video or large files on the drive or listen to music off it. I reported this to seagate tech support and they referred me to a support chat, who then told me that it was a defective drive. I sent the drive back and have since got a new drive with exactly the same problem. All the steps listed on their support for fixing this problem have failed and I am left feeling cheated that this drive could ever be labelled as mac compatible. Do not buy this drive.
Steer well clear! November 22, 2008 Mark Riley Totally died after only a couple of months and still under guarantee. Seagate are of no help what so ever. The ask a crazy amount of money to retrieve lost data and only after several very expensive phone calls did they agree to replace it. That was two months ago and they haven't done this yet after sending several follow up e-mails. I'm now looking at alternative brands and strongly recommend to anyone thinking of buying one of these to save their money and look for an alternative. I lost a lot of valuable data from this unit but simply couldn't afford the 350 they wanted to ATTEMPT to get it back. They want this amount just to look at the drive with no guarantee of finding it. My unit was sent via courtier with signed for delivery to the base in Holland but they still deny having it. Not only am I out pocket but I don't even have the broken drive anymore. My advice... don't buy this!
Invaluable November 17, 2008 R. A. Smith (Wales) I've now owned this drive for almost a year - mainly for media storage and to occasionally back up my own documents. The drive is elegant and sits neatly on the end of a desk, and looks rather sleek. It is quiet at all times, even when being scanned or during transfers. Transfers themselves are quick and reliable. It is also easy to set up - I was up and running with it within minutes.
WARNING - UNRELIABLE November 13, 2008 B C W (Lancashire, England, UK) I suppose you get what you pay for. I've been using one of these for just over ten month (Nov 08). It fell over onto it's side, no great fall or particularly hard landing, now it does not work. Having searched the 'net for a clue as to why it should stop working I am amazed at the number of people out there who have had similar experiences. ANyhow, I've lost my lifetime collection of photographs of my family, places, holidays etc - which were on that drive for storage - and my backed up programme files. Seagate warranty will replace the hard drive, but quote 750 US dollars as an average for data recovery. Do yourself a favour - give this one a miss. I would have given this zero stars but it's not possible with the Amazon rating system.
