Seems excellent October 21, 2008 Petercats (Manchester, England) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
I bought the Maxtor OneTouch 4 Plus from Argos about six weeks ago. It came with a robust British plug, unlike some of the units reviewed earlier. The setting up instructions are rather confusing... the natural inclination is to try using the supplied CD, but that is for recovering your PC when the PC's hard-disc has failed. The actual set-up program is on the Maxtor disc, and is "launch.exe" which would not be obvious to someone not PC literate. As suggested, I copied all the initial software, (instruction manuals etc), on the Maxtor onto my PC. I later realised that the manuals are repeated in 101 languages, so I later deleted all those except the English ones, so saving a lot of space on my PC hard drive. The software driving the Maxtor is very easy to use. I copied all my PC's hard-disc onto the Maxtor to create a master back-up, 80GB took what seemed like several hours. I then set it up to back-up anything changed, at 11pm each evening. This happens in the background each evening... I just see the Maxtor light flashing for a minute or so. I've copied a whole lot of music files, big .wav files, to and from the Maxtor with no problems. All seems to work very well. I've never had to reinstall everything onto a PC, so I cannot say if the Maxtor back-up will work then. I find its presence comforting, as my PC's hard drive is about eight years old, and might fail.
Seagate/Maxtor onetouch4 plus 500gB external HDD September 6, 2008 Branley (Billericay, UK) 20 out of 20 found this review helpful
I have deferred purchasing an external HDD for many years because of 1/ costs 2/doubts about relability 3/ doubts about software. So I have purchased the Computer Which, Computer active and scoured the internet over a period hoping for advice/guidance test results and reviews. I have always understood the need for organised backups for important data - especially my family history collected over 22 years - but for the forementioned reasons the motivation was diluted. However, recent news about Seagate acquiring Maxtor, the offerings from Western Digital and current tests reviews has heightened my interest. Coupled with family PC/notebook problems I have been spurred into action. I decided that the Maxtor onetouch4 plus ticked all of my boxes and it was delivered within 24 hours of ordering it from Amazon. The enclosed hardcopy documentation was initially disappointing, 22 lines of small text. However, following the modest instructions to the letter (vital) and x-referencing the Seagate website, one step at a time ensured relatively user friendly and successful install. The install of the disaster recovery software followed the hardware and initialisation. The drive is unobtrusive altho' it MUST be located on a level platform where it cannot be knocked. It is whisper quiet but the white light can be annoying - just turn the enclosure around if necessary.I copied the whole disk for disaster recovery in half an hour. I now have a robust system, peace of mind and a 5 year warranty to boot.
Worked For Me July 25, 2008 Jonathan Curry (Reading, England) 18 out of 18 found this review helpful
I am not highly technical but found the product easy to set up. Thanks to a very malicious virus which deleted most of my C drive have discovered that the back up worked fine, everything I wanted saved was and getting them back onto my rebuilt PC took only minutes. I am buying another Maxtor for the kids PC today.
Easy setup May 24, 2008 Mgeni (London) 14 out of 22 found this review helpful
Pretty easy to set up. Purpose of buying is for backup purpose in case the computer crashes. Reason for 4 star is, have not had any reason to use it so not sure if will be easy to retrieve the hard drive. I though hope I never have to find out!!
seems to do what it says on the tin! April 10, 2008 Steven Rowan 14 out of 15 found this review helpful
bought to use with imac running time machine fairly straightforward to format for mac, then partition seems to work fine so far, though I've only had it for a few days looks good on the desk, and is stable unlike some I have seen which seem to be at constant risk of being knocked over very quiet indeed doesnt seem to warm up excessively i expect this to give trouble-free backups for years to come - hope I won't be disappointed!
