The perfect mouse. November 22, 2008 White Horses (House on the Hill, UK) For me - the perfect mouse - this thing is fantastic! Briefly: The laser means that the mouse works on ANY surface - table, carpet, my hand, even my cat (just testing). The high DPI means that it's super-accurate for office work. I imagine for gaming too. The special thin cord means it moves as easily as a wireless, without the bulk and weight of wireless devices. It's light and medium sized which for me is ideal for a mouse. Perfect ergonomics and less RSI. Maybe not everyone agrees. The side buttons are small, so they don't get clicked accidentally. Cons: is slightly plastic and cheap feeling. Doesn't bother me. I'm pondering getting another as a spare, as there don't seem to be many of them about. Maybe the person who designed this reads these reviews. If so, congratulations and thanks for making something that works so well and improves my working day.
One of the few mice that just does what you want September 7, 2008 Carpii (Leeds, UK) I spent a long time looking at various mice, including reading lots of tech reviews, before settling on this one. Ill try to share what Ive learnt, so you dont have to wade through the same painful process as I did. Although I ended up buying a gaming mouse, I dont use it for gaming very often. Im a software and web developer and so often spend a lot of time at the PC. It was important the mouse was comfortable, light, and accurate. I also wanted to avoid too many buttons which often just detract from the overall usability. Wireless vs Wired ------------------ Initially I wanted a wireless mouse, but the general concensus seems to be that wireless mice are heavier and a bit tiring to use after a while. This Laser mouse 6000 does come in a wireless version, however, it is pretty much a different physical design (theres also a 6000 which isnt the gaming version, again a different design. Its all a bit confusing on Microsofts part). This mouse is wired, but the wire is very thin and flexible. Theres virtually no resistance from the wire when moving the mouse, and since I have a long USB extension cable, I dont lose anything by it not being wireless. Laser ----- The laser aspect of this mouse is apparently a step up from optical, the difference supposedly being increased resolution, plus none of the red light leakage that is common on optical mice. Being a laser/optical based mouse obviously means theres no mouse wheel to get clogged up with grime, and Id say the laser is very accurate on my desks and mousepad. I cant say Ive noticed it being any more or less accurate than an optical mouse personally, maybe in fast action games it would make a slight difference. Mouse wheel ----------- Virtually all of the other Microsoft series seem to have design issues with the mousewheel. The 5000 has a 4-way mouse wheel. Personally I would avoid these as I rarely need to scroll sideways, and If I do, I can always click the middle button. Additionally, many people have commented that the 4 way mousewheel actually makes it more difficult when you just want to click the mousewheel, introducing either a slight delay, not registering the click, or thinking you clicked the wheel sideways when you actually just wanted to click it down. Other Microsoft mice also have a 2-way mouse wheel, but most models freewheel rather than scrolling in graduations (or 'detents' as theyre apparently called). This is true of the NON-gaming 6000 Laser Mouse, and also true of the 6000 wireless and the 5000 model, so be aware of that if you think it would irritate you. Why they didnt just give the 6000 Gaming mouse a different model number, is beyond me. Buttons --------- This mouse has the standard 2 buttons and mousewheel, but also has two very small buttons on the side of the mouse. As other reviewers have noted, the mouse is designed for both left and right handed people, so the end result is that these buttons are usable by all, but ideally placed for neither. By default, the left side button acts like your browsers back button, and the right side button brings up a magnification tool. Another Microsoft example of style over substance I think. Personally I ended up clicking them a lot by accident. This isnt a big issue because I have no real use for them anyway, and have now disabled them. The main left and right buttons are the right sensitivity, and can be clicked very easily, but rarely by accident. Appearance ---------- The mouse looks good, and the body and buttons are a single piece of smooth metallic black plastic. Build quality is good, and theres no groove joints on the buttons to collect dirt. The mouse wheel is good too, with a slightly notched surface for easier scrolling. If anything Id say its a tiny bit too stiff to turn, but maybe that will loosen up over time. Software -------- The mouse uses Microsoft Intellipoint software, which by default, replaces the middle click with an application chooser, showing you a preview of all windows open. This is vaguely useful, but I use the middle button a lot for browsing in Firefox, and so Id rather it went back to default. Fortunately you can customise all buttons. Overall ------- If you are looking for a good quality mouse, which is nice and easy to use, I can recommend this mouse. It doesnt have the myriad of extra buttons or 4 way mousewheel, which in my view is a bonus (and becoming increasingly rare in new mice). I would definitely buy this mouse again, regardless of price. Its a bonus that it is so cheap on Amazon, when some of the more flawed models are fetching prices of up to 50. So there you have it. Not the most exciting thing in the world to review, but if you use a PC lots (as I do), you may aswell have a nice mouse. Finally, if you're looking for a perfect keyboard to go with it, I can recommend the Enermax Aurora (do a Google, Im not sure its on Amazon).
Excellent mouse. May 20, 2008 A. M. Shakeshaft (England) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Nice and light, super accurate. The first thing worth mentioning is the lack of the 3d scroll wheel. This is a massive plus point to me. For a good old working mouse this is the best option I have tried. The extra buttons take a little while to find but are placed sensibly. The overall appearance is alright but the feel is a little cheap but you soon forget this with the speed and accuracy If you are after a working mouse buy this and encourage microsoft to leave a few mice without the 3d scroll wheel. Excellent bit of kit but why so expensive ? The cordless is cheaper. I have the cordless at home and the corded at work. Enough said.
Superb mouse, fantastic value. October 11, 2007 Roderick J. Macfarlane (Scotland) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I bought this mouse to replace the crappy one that came with my computer. As all gamers will know, the mouse is possibly the most personal thing about a computer, and so my review is based solely on how I enjoy this mouse. I was somewhat apprehensive about buying a mouse from the internet as I would have no guarantee that this was the right mouse for me, and bought it because i wanted a wired laser mouse by a reputable company (in this case, microsoft). I had used the Razer Copperhead before on a friends PC, and whilst it is undoubtadly a fine mouse with superb tracking and sensitivity, I found it quite uncomfortable to use. Current gaming mice by logitech simply look very uncomfortable (I like my mouse to sit very flat under my hand) and so judging by this picture I decided to buy it. I have not been at all dissapointed- the mouse is superb. It is nicely weighted, its sit comfortably under my hand, with the back of the mose nicely tapered to fit right into my palm. The buttons have a very nice and responsive action and push with a proper "click". The tracking is fantastic- it doesnt jerk at all, and the sensitivity (provided you set it according to your own tastes) is perfect, very smooth and precise, and quite capable of both super responsive head-shot mode and simply browsing the internet. The side buttons are a nice feature, with a cool "zoom in" feature (useless in directx games but great for reading small text or zooming in on a video without ruining the quality)and a handy "back" button for internet browsing. The rest of my family sometimes get annoyed at these buttons when they accidently press them, but they can be disabled and in all honesty its worth buying this mouse just for its basic functions. The software supplied with the mouse is great: it installed quickly with no gremlins and the software is very intuitive and easy to use, with some cool and useful features. As I said before, mouse choice is a matter of preference, but this is a fantastic mouse that for less than 20 quid makes the 50 logitech and razer mice look like a total rip off, and to be honest, this is quite possibly a better mouse anyway. Trust me on this, choose this over any other mouse on amazon (or anywhere else) and you'll be glad you did- money well spent and money well saved.
Best Mouse, Best Price April 8, 2007 Mr. M. W. J. Godden (Dorset) 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
I have, for many years spent time trying to adjust to many different types of mice. i found that very cheap mice re uncomfortable and not accurate with a DPI of 10 or below! I also found that the very expensive are good but still not worth the staggering price. This mouse is not cheap, yet not expensive, so the price is good and the feel of the mouse is good. Its says 'Gaming mouse' and as a 'gamer' i finds it very useful with buttons on the side, for example you could reload your gun with the button on the left hand side. If you are looking for a new up-to-date mouse this is the one. 5/5!
