Since I switched to Mac from PC six months ago, I've been through three Mighty Mice. The only area of concern is the scroll ball. It works brilliantly for a while, but the internal gubbins soon gets dirty and the ball becomes unreliable.
I love the Idea of the Mighty Mouse - clean and simplistic to look at, uncluttered but capable of much more than you'd think, and that scroll ball is a work of genius. It is precise and customisable and it looks flippin' cool. But it soon goes wrong. The scroll ball, one of the Mighty Mouse's biggest plus points, is also its biggest problem.
Who remembers the mice of yore, the ones with the rubber coated ball-bearings used to track movement? After a while, the crud that was picked up by the ball and got deposited on the mouse's sensor wheels built up and stopped the thing from working properly. The good thing was that you could take the ball out and remove the crud to get the thing working properly again (an unfolded paperclip was my tool of choice :-) The Mighty Mouse's scroll ball works on the same principle as the old fashioned ball-bearing mice, and it gathers crud in exactly the same way. But the Mighty Mouse is a sealed unit, so you can't take it apart to clean it. The only cleaning method that provides a short term fix is to hold the mouse up-side-down on a piece of paper, apply pressure, and roll the ball back and forth and side to side rapidly. This sometimes improves things, but soon becomes ineffective.
I'll never go back to Windows PCs, but the Apple Mighty Mouse is being ditched as soon as my current one starts to play up. The only bad apple (ahem!!) in an otherwise excellent package.

I'm amazed there are so many positive reviews, it drives me completely nutty.
The pointer is forever disappearing and I have to keep lifting it up and moving it around to find where it has gone off to. When I bought my imac the ones in the store did this and I hoped it was just the display models.
I have replaced it with my old logitech nano and this never happens anymore so it is definitely the mouse and not me or the computer settings that is causing this trait.
I will agree with everyone that the scroll ball is a very good feature but doesn't make up for the disappearing pointer.
 Need to get use to it......but you will love the overall design. August 14, 2008

I use this mouse on a PC and find it excellent for working with Photoshop and other Adobe creative packages.
IT WILL TAKE A FEW WEEKS TO ADAPT TO USING IT.
The `Scroll ball' takes a bit of getting use to and YES....this does have a reputation for malfunctioning after a year or so.....if Apple's site is anything to go by. And....I'm on my second mouse for this reason alone.
But having gotten so use to using this mouse I found it impossible to revert back to an ordinary mouse, however expensive.
Most people tend to be a little critical of the left/right click/selection. This is another feature that will take some getting use to.
But looks aside, this is a great mouse.
I must not forget to also point out that those with large hands or if you have been use to a larger Microsoft style mouse....you might find this chap a little too small.
One final word of advise.....if you are going to use this mouse with a PC (certainly does work without installation of any driver) please note that the design of the mouse in terms of USB length is designed (obviously) for a MAC, with the USB being situated on the keyboard. So you will almost definitely require a USB extension lead.

The Apple Mighty mouse (in both USB and wireless formats) is a worthy contender for the best mouse ever made. In particular, its tiny hyper-sensitive vertical & horizontal scroll button genuinely speeds up on-screen "productivity" to a level that, once you've got used to it, nothing else will do. Brilliant, that is until the scroll button stops working which in my case is about every 9 to 12 months. Bad news then... well yes, no piece of kit should do this, but right or wrong that's the way it is and when it happens I happily shell-out for a new one because it's that good to use. Look on it as the world's best disposable mouse and you won't be disappointed...

I've had Apples for nearly 20 years now and have always found then well engineered and of high quality. The Mighty Mouse, however, I have a love hate relationship with. The scroll ball idea is FANTASTIC, and I've not seen it on other mice, but the problem is it's not really robust enough and after 9-12 months fills up with dirt and stops working. If they'd made the internal workings less fragile it would get five stars. Despite other comments you can take it apart and clean it, but I wouldn't exactly call it user serviceable. You can find the instructions on how to do it on the net. This operation is not for the faint hearted as there's some very small pieces, but I've cleaned mine twice now and got it back together and it works again.
In summary concept : 5 stars, Robustness for everyday use: 2 stars.
