2 out of 5 stars Feels cheap   January 22, 2008

I bought a Sony 8GB Micro Vault, as it looks quite solid in the pictures and I have always found Sony products to be well constructed. However, when I received the product (and no complaints for the service from Moreflash - ordered late Friday evening and arrived early the next Tuesday) I found that it feels very cheap and fragile. In fact it feels more like a cheap plastic toy from a fairground than something that I will be entrusting to carry my documents around on. I guess that if it lasts for a couple of years (which I doubt) then I should not really complain, as this is what I bought it to do, but these days I expect my hardware items to be well made and aesthetically pleasing and not cheap and tacky (Apple versus Chad Valley). So it's 5 stars for the 8GB, but no star's for the build quality = 2 stars. If you were my friend and you were buying a USB flash stick, I would tell you not to buy the Sony Micro Vault and look elsewhere.

4 out of 5 stars Recommended for everyone except the fingerprint-phobic   January 10, 2008

Admittedly, this is the only USB flash drive I've used, so I don't have anything with which to compare it, but I'm pleased with the drive so far. From my point of view it scores highly both in terms of looks and performance.

One point worth noting for anyone with an older operating system, is that although the drive itself is compatible with Windows 98 onwards, the pre-installed 'Virtual Expander' software, which can triple the capacity of the drive by compressing files, only works with Windows XP and Vista.

Also, the dimensions stated in Amazon's product description are a bit misleading; the drive actually measures approximately 66 x 17 x 7 mm.

5 out of 5 stars It's actually very good.   October 13, 2007

Contrary to the previous review, I've actually been carrying one of these around in my jacket pocket for over a year and find it very good. The hard shiny plastic case stands up to wear much better than the SanDisk stick I had before that, and (unlike that one, which had a soft plastic cover) nor does the case become discoloured and loose after a few months.

With previous devices I've had which had removeable connector covers some part of the cover has broken after a while - with this device the connector is on a slider so there is no cover to break. True, I've worried about bits of grit etc getting into the open end, but so far that has never been a problem - if you notice anything in there you just give it a shake to get rid of it.

And, the capacity is pretty good too.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing...   June 23, 2007

I got one of these for the Sony name and good looks.

Unfortunately it looks and feels very cheap and nasty.

The device is made of very light, very shiny black plastic, and the chrome part is also a very light and shiny plastic - so it becomes smothered in finger prints and marks very quickly. Because this is so light and frail looking, it looks as though it could be damaged very easily.

The USB connector moves inside the device, but this still leaves the connector open which could easily be damaged if kept anywhere with other items (anything could get inside the connector and cause damage). Other USB drives have a protective cover for the USB connector, but this doesn't.

There are no grip areas on the sides of this, which means that if it's plugged into a tight USB port, your fingers tend to slip on the shiny plastic making it difficult to get a good grip.

Also, the slider on the side used to retract the USB connector rattles and moves, again giving a cheap feel to the device.

There's 1.87GB free space straight from the packet - which requires a sharp and strong pair of scissors to open.

So 3 major issues with this: cheap plastic meaning that it's not robust and easily damaged; plastic is very shiny showing marks, finger prints, and any scratches that may appear; no protection for the USB connector leaving it open to damage.

I don't recommend this product at all, and would urge others to look for something better first.
