black magic October 23, 2008 emma who reads a lot (London) It's light, it's slim, it fits on my desk without taking up loads of space, it was cheap, it looks really, really nice, sleek and black and shiny (which matters to some superficial people such as myself). I brought it in the door ten minutes ago and I just printed my first document. And I have a Mac, and there was no fiddling around at all. A totally pleasant surprise. I will only say that there is a newer model available, but that's why mine was so cheap. As for those moaning about ink costs I bought this one because it was cheaper than replacing the ink on my Epson which I'd never really loved. And black Epson ink costs 16.99, whereas it looks to me as if I can get Canon black for less. For someone just printing word documents like me I think that it will be great. Although it isn't the blackest effect in the entire world I am currently printing onto very porous paper so I might treat myself to some coated paper and see if it looks smarter. Feeling very happy after an afternoon of "am i doing the right thing?"
Don't waste your money September 3, 2008 A. J. CLEMENT (Cheshire, U.K) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I bought this on the strength of the majority of good reviews this product received. I sincerely wish that I hadn't. Once the cartridges provided had run out I found it next to impossible to find compatible cheap replacements and the price of the canon cartridges are far too high. I tried using a refill kit but the printer refuses to acknowledge that it has more ink and on top of that, after only a few months of very light use the nozzles are clogged and are impossible to clean. I replaced my old epson stylus with this lemon because I was tired of nozzle clogging and expensive cartridges ( but at least i could get some cheap ones from the supermarket! ) if I had known what a headache this was going to be I would have just got another Epson - better the devil you know. So save yourself the aggro and look for something else - this is one printer I would not recommend
Cheap Printer? July 3, 2008 Mike Himself (Normandy, France.) Great printer, great price - pity about the cost of cartridges! This has to be the cheapest photo-quality printer on the market and it doesn't take long to find out why. A set of replacement cartridges costs almost as much as the printer! Canon have cunningly incorporated the print heads into the cartridges, making it impossible for "compatible" manufacturers to produce cheap copies. So they make their money from the cartridges and over the years you will pay for the printer many times over. The European Commission is currently investigating printers. Perhaps they will decide that this is an unfair business practise? Maybe they will get around to doing something about it in my lifetime? In the meantime I am refilling my cartridges. Not so simple, as the software somehow decides when a cartridge is finished and won't let the printer measure the ink levels. But there is a software tool that can be downloaded from the Internet (not from Canon!) that makes it possible to work round this. Somehow you get the feeling that every obstacle has been put in the way. Oh, and eventually you are going to get a message saying "Used ink tank is full" and Canon don't give you any help with sorting that one out either! I think this is going to be my LAST Canon printer.
Bulky and temperamental May 19, 2008 Mrs. D. N. Rooney (Chester, UK) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
Maybe I just got a 'lemon', but after less than a year it bluntly refuses to load paper and so is useless. Original ink cartridges cost the earth and it gets all-sniffy about compatibles, maintaining that the cartridges are empty when they plainly aren't. Also, more often than not, copies came out at a bit of an angle because the paper didn't sit straight in the paper feed.
Great for the price. February 5, 2008 R. Byrne (North London) 17 out of 17 found this review helpful
After going through two Epson printers in the space of eighteen months, I decided I had enough of that brand and looked around both online and in stores for a replacement. As I only really need a printer for invoices etc I settled on this machine and after operating it now for a few weeks I can safely say that it is well worth the money. It was relatively easy to install, needed no extra calibrations, prints quickly and quietly. Yes, it goes through ink but no more than my epsons did and the cartridges are a couple of quid cheaper to replace, though I will refill mine. A couple of people have marked it down because it doesn't come with the usb cable, luckily I had one already. A few years ago it was standard to have to purchase a plug separately from any electrical appliance one brought and you had to put it on yourself when you got home. Fortunately, we've moved on from there, but printer manufacturers should take note that the same principle should go with their printers ... include the usb cable and you'll have much happier customers!
