4 out of 5 stars does what I bought it for   June 30, 2008

The unit arrived on time and well packaged, however two of the pins on the power supply cable were bent but after straitening them they fit into place ok. I had none of the problems described in other reviews of this product, the facia came away smoothly and after removing the IDE power and data cables and replacing them with the provided SATA cables I inserted the drive and closed the facia (make sure the screws are in correctly and don't over tighten as they are poor quality).

Windows found the device with no problem and after a few weeks everything seems to be working fine.

The price doesn't include the delivery charge which was 5 and some instruction for novice user's would be helpful. Also why do manufacturers keep designing these cases with the led light at the same side as the connections? It would look far neater with the light on its own.

Overall I am happy with this purchase as it does what I bought it for.

The picture shows a black HDD enclosure, but mine turned up silver. I'll have to number it with a marker pen or stick a piece of tape on it to distinguish it from the silver one I bought at the same time.

The unit works, but on one of the ones I bought the closing screw doesn't bite, so I'll have to tape the enclosure to keep it closed.

The LED is on the same end of the unit as the data and power wires, so you have to choose between looking at the neat blank end or the messy cabling and also the LED. Many other units have the LED on the other end from the wiring, so you can drape the wires down the back and have a neat front facing outwards.

In one of the units I bought, the HDD fits snugly inside. In the other it rattles when shaken.

These units actually function OK, but I'll buy a different model if I need another.

4 out of 5 stars it does the job but........   January 7, 2008

OK, this is a really cheap piece of kit and it did the job I bought it for so I have no gripes on that front, however I have one or two observations to make.
1. the housing itself is very robust but the screws to secure the fascia giving access to the inside were poor quality turning to mash straight away so it is now a `push fit' operation to close the unit.
2. first time out I could just about get the fascia off to get access to the inside of the unit without breaking it - I suspect that if you go as far as fully inserting a hard disk, it will be for keeps; unless you push the whole lot out from the other end which will probably damage the unit.
To finish, if you are going to install a drive and leave it alone, this is the right piece of kit at a very keen price, if like me you want to use the kit for data recovery etc. involving regularly installing and removing disks - keep looking!
