Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
Developed exclusively for use with Nikon DX Format digital SLR cameras, this lightweight, compact zoom lens is an excellent match for the new Nikon D2H digital SLR camera. The 17-55mm range exceeds 3x zoom to broaden wide angle to medium telephoto photographic possibilities, and the lens maintains fast f/2.8 aperture throughout to make it practical and easy to use. When mounted on any of the Nikon D2H, D1-series or D100 digital SLR cameras, the picture angle is the equivalent to 25.5 to 82.5mm on a 35mm [135] format camera. The range and image quality makes this the lens professionals and advanced enthusiasts will use most with Nikon DX Format digital SLR cameras for shooting portraits and close-ups, as well as nature studies. It also complements the AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 12-24mm f/4G IF-ED lens in Nikon s expanding DX Nikkor lens lineup. Nikon established yet stricter evaluation standards for the new lens, and it achieves greater picture resolution as a result. The newly developed optical system employed includes three ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass elements that minimize chromatic aberration and three aspherical lenses that minimize distortion. Nikon s exclusive Silent Wave Motor (SWM) ensures fast, quiet autofocus. And the nine-blade rounded diaphragm opening provides a rich, natural look to out-of-focus elements. With its useful wide range and high quality performance, this compact, lightweight lens will help win a warm place for the Nikon DX format in the hearts of Digital SLR users.

5 out of 5 stars Built like a tank   August 16, 2008

Buy this lens for the fantastic build quality. The optics are nice and sharp and it's perfectly balanced on my D200. I've treated this lens badly, it's been up mountains with me and to some seriously cold places (Svalbard). I've even slipped and had it smash down on hard rocks taking out a small chip of metal from the casing, the body suffered no dents (besides the chip) and the focusing and zoom rings are still as smooth as the day I brought it, optics unaffected. This lens is built amazingly well and will probably last longer than me.

5 out of 5 stars If you only buy one lens make sure its this one.   July 7, 2008

Although I would never suggest only having one lens for your camera this one really does do it all and worth every penny of the asking price. Its pin sharp wide open and across all focal lengths.

5 out of 5 stars Tack Sharp and shows mega detail   December 12, 2007

I have had this lens for a few months and have used it for portraits, sports and architectural photography and I am blown away with how good this lens is. As my title says its tack sharp and shows up such detail. The lens seems a bit bulky but it feels great in the hand and on the camera.

The range is superb for portrait work and at its widest its great for architectural work. The focus can be auto or manual and on my D2H and D2Xs focuses fast and accurately.

The lens comes with the 72 mm filter which is great as its corresponds with most ogf the professional zooms I use so no need to get a number of filters.

One disappointment is the lack of vibration reduction (VR) but being a short lens, as yet that has not been a major problem.

If you take your photography seriously then this is the lens for you and it has now become my standard lens.

5 out of 5 stars Just buy it!   May 29, 2007

Title says it all.

Even though this is a zoom lense, I say that for when I was learning the basics of photography, zoom lenses were not considered professional. Well I can assure you that this lense is as sharp as any prime (not a zoom lense) lense that I own. The one advantage tha\t a prime has is usually that they are faster lenses more suited for quicker subject matters or in lower light levels.

In terms of image sharpness I would challenge any prime user who doubt this lenses' abilities, to produce a more in focus image.

BUYER BEWARE - this lense could loose you friends. I your Auntie, you know, the real wrinkley one(!) thinks she's pretty but everyone else see a moose, this lense won't hide her looks. If you want a lense that will soften the looks of someone then buy a cheaper lense or buy software like Photoshop to soften the image afterwards. That's what I do as you can soften a sharp image but find it almost impossible to sharpen an already soft image.

One final thought - attached to my D200 this lense combo weighs a fair amount so be prepared for Popeye forearms - but it'll be worth it.
