Good choice for ADF duplex printer scanner November 4, 2008 John Myatt (Durham, UK) This all in one includes a good colour printer and will both scan and print in duplex. Another review has had problems with Vista, all I can say is it loaded fine with my Vista 64 bit machine. The only problem I have encountered was caused by scanning thin sheets through the ADF which then mis-fed. This should not be unexpected with very light weight paper, but it is easy enough to clear the jam. This machine, like many modern printers from many makers these days, uses "chipped" ink cartridges. This is a device used by the manufacturers to get you to buy their ink, but Canon are not alone with this. These chips are clearly another source of faults, see other reviews. This is a very substantial printer and you will require a large area not just for the immediate footprint but also for the paper feeder and output tray. Their are two feeders on this and you will need a substantial free area in "front" of the machine to access the front paper feeder, which is under the output tray. The view screen can be angled to allow better viewing, however the menu items are also substantial and reading the quick guide will be essential for most, if they are to set up for their optimum performance. This machine has fax facilities, but also a telephone out, to which a wired handset can be attached. The only two additions that could be made to this, is a network card, so that it could be placed directly onto a network and in a business environment used as a small work group printer scanner and a small niggle, the inclusion of a USB2 lead. No USB lead is included so if you do not have one, make sure you purchase one, or you will not be able to set this up until you get one. It does however come with a selection of leads to connect the fax to the telephone socket including a wide selection of continental telephone adapters.
DO NOT BUY THIS PRINTER, SLOW NOT FULLY VISTA COMPATIBLE October 17, 2008 The Sparky (uk) This is probably the worst printer on the market, i would not touch a Canon printer again. This manufacturer should stick to cameras. Following problems: 1. No proper drivers for Vista, when printing a document, i causes the pc to freeze for 5 mins. 2. Takes 5 mins of mechanism rattling back & forth before even printing a page. 3. Uses vast quantities of ink. 4. Stops during printing for no reason. 5. Doen't always print, prints garbled characters regularly. 6. Only fit for the bin!
Constantly needs repair September 22, 2008 Plumbuddle 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Not good. This is clunky, slow, bends edge of paper as it feeds it in, and ultimately blocks its own printer mechanism with tiny shreds of paper. This is a repeated problem with the Pixmas which you can correct by checking chat groups online rather than having to send off for expensive repairs, but home repairing is time consuming and dirty work. the last time I did it the machine broke a tiny spring and I had to junk it after less than one year's use. Grrrr.
Critical Error Issues - Shameful Really April 28, 2008 G. Wood (London) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Oh dear. Looks great - if a bit large - quality is fine, lots of functionality. However i've had two units so far, the first had a broken fax, the second, after 5 months use has developed a U150 error message. Canon seem to know all about the issue - which is really bad for a newish model machine. This is apparently a common problem with Canon not unique to this model. Simply, the printer uses a chip on individual cartridges, these often fail and then your printer has a contunious error message. Re-seating the cartridge may clear the error temporarily, but only temporarily. You need a new cartridge - very irritating if the cartridge is almost full & v expensive. NO OTHER FEATURE on the multifunction machine will work if you have an error message, no scan, no fax, nothing. It's also quite ink hungry and as other reviewers have commented takes a minute or two to warm up. Oh and one very very serious design flaw if you duplex print; it will print one side using a black cartridge, but will print the reverse in greyscale using all the colour cartridges, or to put it another way, in the most expensive ink consuming way possible. Canon Service Helpline is a bit pants really, they don't really know anything. I bought a Canon after having critical errors with my last HP machine, but it seems to be a case of rock and hard place. Incidentially lots of HPs use Canon print transports so it's difficult to get an 'independent' manufactured product. I despair - I just want a reliable machine - this is apparently too much to ask.
Terrible February 11, 2008 C. M. Page (Spain) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I bought this machine just over a year ago and have regretted it ever since. It takes ages to warm up and then when you ask it to do something it spends ages thinking about it. It drinks ink like it's going out of fashion and tells you to replace cartridges when there is still plenty of ink left. If a colour cartridge is "running low" and I want to do a B&W photocopy it reminds me that the colour cartridge needs replacing and asks if I want to continue. I have given up using the ADF as it jams so often. The paper guides on the secondary paper feed don't stay in place so when I use it they move and the printing comes out crooked. It has recently started telling me about paper jams in the back of the machine, but there seems to be no way to clear the jams other than to turn it off and an again. This is the first time that I have ever written a review of anything on the internet but this printer exasperates me so much that I feel compelled to vent some of my frustration by writing this. In short this is a terrible machine and I recommend you don't touch it with a bargepole.
