Competent laptop at a superb price September 19, 2007 Glen Vaal (Guildford, Surrey) 24 out of 25 found this review helpful
Earlier this year I was looking for a well made "modern" laptop for basic office usage. It had to be low cost, but well made, not to heavy for lugging around, have a good screen, reasonable power, easy internet access and a big hard-drive. After much research, I bought a Samsung R20. The first impression is of very good quality. Build is good, the screen is clear and keyboard action is fast and confident without any flexing. The shiny piano black casing makes it appear far more expensive than the under 500 price paid. Some tips: Vista takes a lot of screen driving power and the R20 uses an ATI driver that takes some of the memory. I replaced one of the 512 memory sticks with a 1Gb one and the graphic response is excellent (it also helps to disable Vista's transparency feature - right click on the screen, chose properties and find the correct box to tick/untick). Second, Samsung require you to "split" the 120Gb hard drive into 2 partitions when you first start-up the machine - unfortunately they don't give guidance on what sizes you might chose and why. One recommendation could be a 40:80 split, keeping the larger partition for data only, making it more logical for your backups. Sorry if I got little bit techical there. The bottom line is that this is a very good value machine, fit for domestic or business use. It will suit most users, though probably not gamers or graphic designers. I note that the Nov 2007 issue of PC World has recommended the R20 in their "A" list as the "Value Notebook".
