3 out of 5 stars The Best...almost....   August 14, 2008

Well what can I say....its one of the best units I have ever used. I was never an apple fan so never bought one but when I saw this I had to have it, with the software upgrade it is great. You can find your position on google maps (providing your in wifi range!), you can check the stockmarket (again only in wifi range), you can write notes, play games, look at photos (but not take them), listen to music, watch youtube, browse the internet. I mean this really is a spectacularly versatile unit. 16 GB was enough for me as my music range is limited but for someone who has a wide selection of music this may not be enough especially if you have alot of other files on there. I wouldnt recommend this unit for someone who loves music and just needs an mp3 player, but then I wouldnt recommend this unit to anyone!! As good as it is, all it really is is an iPhone without a camera or a phone, text capability!! Seriously, the only advantage I can honestly see is that it is slimmer, admittedly it is probably about half the depth of an iPhone, but apart from that it is simply an underdeveloped iPhone!! As the touch isn't particularly cheap anyway I would recommend everyone throws their old contract phones away, go to o2 and get an iPhone!! That way you dont have to carry a touch and another phone, you dont have to worry about not hearing your phone when your listening to your music, you wont have to pay the 200 plus starting price of the touch and yet...it is just as good as a touch!

4 out of 5 stars Great gadget, but old Ipod accessories not compatible   August 11, 2008

I bought the 16GB Ipod Touch to replace my old style 4GB Nano. The Ipod Touch is a beautiful gadget, and is very nice to use. It is a shame that my old Ipod accessories, such as my radio and my charger, do not work with the Ipod Touch. Despite having the same dock fitting, these accessories aren't compatible and I will be forced to pay out to replace these too - expensive and not very "green". Apart from this, the Ipod Touch is great and you can have hours of fun on the wifi - browsing online, checking whats on at the cinema, reading the newspaper, checking the sports scores etc. Music and video play very well and the "cover flow" feature for browsing through your albums is fab.

2 out of 5 stars Hugely over-rated   July 1, 2008

I was bought an iPod 16gb for christmas, my first MP3 player. It was a generous gift but my wife only bought it because she liked the gimmicky photo rotation trick. Even that does not work properly sometimes - angling the photo at right angles to how I want to see it. As a music player i don't think it is anything special - maximum volume can come across as quite quiet on some recordings. It's a pain to adjust the volume while playing music: first press the menu button, then slide finger across screen to activate controls then adjust volume setting. Not exactly as simple as rotating a wheel on an iPod classic!
Video picture quality is good, but fast forwarding and rewinding is tricky to control since the scroll bar is so small you can only slide it to within an approximation of where you want to jump to. You will need extra software to get DVDs/movies onto the iPod which can be fiddly.
I'm not the kind of person interested in e-mail or internet browsing on the go, so most of the apple software is redundant. And i-tunes as a controlling piece of software is not great.

5 out of 5 stars Great for email, youTube and web browsing.   June 29, 2008

Well I've had the iTouch for several months now and I have to admit it is much better than I first thought. I'm not an Apple devotee so it took me quite a while before I decided to buy one. What swung it for me was watching the keynote address about the iPhone SDK and the potential for future applications and gaming.

To be truthful I wasn't looking for a music player, more a replacement for my aging Palm PDA. So the news that you'd be able to run applications and even write your own was enough for me to pick one up.

I can't say much about the device as a music player. To be honest my Sony mp3 player is probably a better device for this as it has excellent noise canceling headphones and can be used in the pocket without needing to look at the display. I can't say much about video playback or photos as I haven't got around to putting any on the device.

However, I can talk about the email client, youTube, the web browser and iTunes integration, oh and google maps. They are all excellent.

I find myself frequently using the web browser on my iTouch rather than booting up the PC. Similarly I can check my email quickly without the need for a PC too.

I can use the iTouch to write quite long emails as the keyboard, contrary to many (iPhone/smartphone) reviews is very good. The keyboard is virtual, rather than a physical keyboard with real buttons and as such provides no tactical feedback when you press a key. When you look at the keyboard when composing emails it looks fairly small and typing errors are very frequent. However what many of the negative reviews of the iPhone keyboard neglect to mention, is that the keyboard has both corrective and predictive text... Difficult to explain, but it will try to predict the word you are trying to type e.g. 'hello' even if you've typed 'helko' because you've typed k instead of l due to their close proximity to each other. In practice you can type very quickly even if you're getting say 20% of the letters incorrect. I'm very impressed with this feature.

I would also like to mention the language support of the device. You can select which languages you wish the device to support, for example, English, Spanish and Japanese and then when you're writing email etc. you can easily change between these keyboards. The japanese is particularly impressive as you can type in romanji and it will give you the kanji and hiragana options. Again with predictive completion. Very cool.

The implementation of google maps is brilliant. You can do the zoom in and out thingy with your fingers... it can give you satellite overlays etc. the same as on the PC. It is worth knowing that it seems to cache the maps so that you can store a map for when you're out and about away from a wifi access point.

iTunes integration is very good and the wifi support allows you to browse and purchase music whenever you feel like again without the PC. The same for youTube. You are guaranteed to waste more time on youTube with this device... and if you've set up the email you can send friends links.... (If it sounds like I'm old because I'm going on about email rather than facebook/mySpace etc... it is because I am :-)

I don't have a protective cover for my device, other than keeping it in a soft (minidisk) pouch. It seems to be pretty robust as I don't give it any special treatment. It gets slung in my rucksack with all my other junk. The screen does get smeared, but after the first week or so you stop fanatically polishing it :) Keeping it in the previously mentioned pouch keeps it fairly polished without any effort.

I find the stocks application very useful, it gives you a 20 minutes delayed price and % change for each of your stocks. The weather application gives you a week at glance for each location you setup (In Madrid, that's mostly 'scorchio'). It all works very nicely.

On the 11th of July Apple will be releasing a software update for the iTouch (unfortunately we'll have to pay to upgrade) which will allow access to the application store, which will be to apps what iTunes is to music. I'm particularly looking forward to getting Sega's super monkey ball game :-)

There are a few issues, like no cut, copy and paste when editing text. It also seems to occasionally jump out of youTube or the web browser for no reason... It has locked up once or twice mainly whilst trying to exit a youTube video.

Overall I'd say that the iTouch is a pretty decent portable computer. It has even made me think that the iPhone might not be such a bad idea after all.

Geez. I sound like an Apple fan boy.

Having spent the last lord knows how many month saying that i couldn't justify buying an ipod touch ,and anyway it will probably be a pain to transfer all my stuff to it,i gave in ,,,,and i am sooooooo glad i did!!!!!

It arrived just before my lunch break at work , so i just had to go home to charge it etc so i could spend the evening putting the contents of my ipod mini onto it (plus all the stuff that wouldn't fit on my ipod mini (only 4gb)),,,,,well drove home(just under 10 mins) plugged in into the laptop followed a few prompts and before i knew it i was back at work having completed a 1 hour lunch break (and no i wasn't late back) ipod touch in hand and fully loaded .

The moral of this story ,,,,,i don't care what anyone says its not hard , or time consuming to switch from one ipod to another , so if thats why your not getting one ,,,,,coz of the hastle ,,,,,forget it there is none....

Also for the ladies ........It even frees up space in your handbag ,,,,,no more music player ,diary , address book, book for reading when your bored, notebook , screwed up shopping list that become illegible ,,,oh yeh and the zillion photos of you husbands/kids/grandkids/cats.....you get the picture , it does it all in a super sleek , super shiny package .....and for that added extra ,,,if your in a wi-fi hotspot you can check out your latest ebay bid or maybe just drop an email to auntie Maude in switzerland......

And the battery life is just incredible , i listen to mine all day at work and didn't have to charge it for 3 days ....what more can i say ,the only thing its missing is the phone ,,,such a shame apple chose the provider they did or i may have been reviewing the iphone not the ipod touch!!!!
