Comparison of 3 portable speakers September 17, 2008 H. Clargo (UK) iStuff Companion Speakers Good points: very, very small & light & have a neat little case if you like that kind of thing. No batteries or power is needed, which makes them very portable. Bad points: poor quality sound and distortion at high volumes. The maximum volume is just enough to be heard in one room, but not if the room is full of people. Also the headphone jack lead is very short. Portable Folding Speakers for Ipods & mp3 players - white = the same as you find on lots of websites. Good points: maximum volume better than iStuff. Not too big. Bad points: heavier than the others because of need for batteries. This is its greatest limitation, I think. Batteries only last about 6 - 8 hours and because you need to turn the speakers off when not using them, you can't use them with a timed programme (e.g. wake up to music or go to sleep with music). They come with a USB power adapter, but they don't get much louder than my computer's built-in speakers, so what's the point if I need to connect to my computer anyway? Loud enough for one room, but not if the room is full of people. They also distort at high volumes. The headphone jack lead is very short. Sony SRS-P7 Stereo Speaker System for Walkman - Silver Good points: very light and not too big, although bigger than iStuff. Tough - I must have dropped mine hard at least 20 times before one little wire came loose. Has long headphone jack lead. No need for batteries or power, which makes them easily portable. I used them as my only speakers for 4 years, would recommend them & will get them again if I kill them. Bad points: Sound also distorts at high volumes, but maximum volume is louder than the other two.
Does ok considering its powered by the MP3 player March 26, 2006 CrashDive (Surrey, UK) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
Does a fair job considering the only power source is the MP3 player I have. Happy with it and it suits my purposes but if you want a decent volume you will have to pay a bit more for an independently powered system.
Alright February 26, 2006 Mr. C. P. Hammond (Hull, UK) 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
I got these and a case free with my Sony Walkman. They are really light, and they don't need batteries, they just run from whatever they're plugged into, even an MP3 player with ONE AAA battery! They may be light, but they are deceptively big, and when they are attached together by the bottoms they're quite big - ok if you're using a bag, I suppose. The sound quality is a mixed bag, and it depends on what they're plugged into. For things that run on next no no power and are so light, the bass is quite good, just so long as you don't expect huge amounts of it! Also, unless what they're plugged into goes reaally loud, these are quite quiet, so you might not be able to hear them in a looud room or on a train or something. They are clear, however, and voices sound great on them. So overall, they're great - when there's no better alternative or no power supply. And they are very cheap.
