does the job perfectly August 12, 2008 Anthony P. Hyland (Staffs, UK) Received the item yesterday, plugged it into XP desktop and XP laptop, didn't load software and it works perfectly using the button on the unit.
Works great for me, but usb cable a little short and switch design odd April 29, 2008 Mr. Cb Rodmell (UK Chichester) Had a look through the reviews here before purchasing, so you can imagine my trepidation when trying it out, but it all seems fine to me. My setup is an IBM laptop and a custom PC, both with windows XP. The first problem is that the vga port is on one side of my laptop and the usb ports are on the other, so I needed to use a usb extender. I tried using just the screen output from the laptop, without the usb port being plugged in (so just using the laptop keys and pad, but viewing the laptop on the monitor) and it did the same thing that many other people are reporting here - it switched briefly to the laptop and then almost immediately switched back to the PC. However, this is because the switch relies on the usb port on each device (Laptop **AND** PC) for power. As soon as I plugged in the USB extender, it worked perfectly. XP noticed the switch and the new usb keyboard and usb mouse, installed them fine within a few seconds ("new hardware ready to use") and I can merrily switch between laptop and PC. It takes 1 second to make the switch, by which time the mouse and keyboard are both fully operational. If I want to switch back again, I have to wait 3 seconds before it will allow me to do this, but I can't see this would be a problem in normal use. I'm using the buttons on the switch to flick between laptop and PC (I don't intend to install the keyboard shortcut driver). The only gripe with the actual unit is that it should have had all the cables coming out of one side rather than some from one end and some from the other, which takes up too much space on the desk and looks untidy (I would have preferred the switch on the desk with all the cables hanging down the back). Overall good so far. Fingers crossed it stays working this well. edit: It's now a few weeks later and it's just had a bit of a fit where it wouldn't switch to the laptop for more than a few seconds. Removing usb cables from both PC and Laptop and plugging back in fixed it. It happened after I restarted windows on the laptop (normally I hibernate it). It's now working fine again.
Sometimes chooses a favourite computer to switch to April 29, 2008 infocom (Wales) As per other reviews it keeps switching back to one of the other PCs. It worked fine yesterday when I installed it, but today it switches to one PC for about 2 seconds, then decides to switch back. Tried restarting both PCs but to no avail. I called Belkin support. Apparently it needs some sort of synchronisation during PC boot up. You are supposed to connect 1 PC and boot up, then connect the other PC and boot up. I switched both my PCs on the same time this morning so maybe thats it. I will try one at a time next time. So its an average of 3: 5 for an excellent piece of kit, and 1 for the fact it stopped working after a day, but I got it working again. So 3 average.
Keep needing to unplug it February 20, 2008 Mr. Henry C. H. Lestrange (Lincolnshire, UK) As mentioned in other views it picks a "favourite" and keeps switching back to it, and the only way to stop it is to unplug it from both USB ports. Very annoying. Buy something else!
Utter garbage January 8, 2008 Lance Private Eccles (Shangri-La) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Were it possible I would rate this as MINUS 2 stars, however I will regretably have to settle for one star. I tried to use this piece of rubbish to switch between two PCs (one Linux, one Windows XP) - want to guess which one it won't work with ? (yes, Windows XP) The P.O.S. (no, not 'Point of Sale') won't remain connected to the Windows PC for more than a moment; just long enough to type a single character (assuming you're ready and poised to do so) before reverting to the other connection (Linux). Swapping the cables and/or USB ports results in no change in the outcome - it just won't work with the Windows PC. Swapping the Windows XP PC for another PC (Windows 2000) gives the same result. All three of the PCs use different well known (and reliable) motherboards. Save yourself money - do NOT buy this piece of GARBAGE.
