Excellent Flash Drive For The Car July 1, 2008 Mark Roberts I bought 2 of these flash drives for reasons not really mentioned in any of the other reviews. I recently bought and installed a new Sony Radio/CD player for my car, and it has amongst other things a USB port for connecting external devices. I ripped & transfered several hundred music MP3's to my flash drive for use in my car. It does away with having to carry loads of CD's in the car (reduces the chance's of theft), you don't need a bulky CD changer in the boot, the tracks don't skip if you drive over some really bad road surfaces, you are not constantly having to change CD's while driving. I just plug it in, switch on the shuffle mode and it plays all my favourite tracks in random order. It's just like having a jukebox in the car, and when you park up, you just put the flash drive in your pocket - brilliant !!! I nearly forgot to mention that when I get back in my car and plug the flash drive in the CD Player, it starts playback where it left off.
2nd one I have purchased and 2nd one that has died April 20, 2008 David Fletcher (Bristol) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Bought a 2gb one and it was fine for 6 months then died so I just upgraded and bought a 4gb one and now this has died too. Cheers Kingston! Think I'll try another manufacturer next time. :(
A good USB flash thats cheap, good looking and functional - but my new 8Gb version runs 2x faster April 14, 2008 Keith Joseph (West Berkshire, England) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I only buy USB2 flash drives for under 30 and don't need security features. In fact if it's lost I am happy for someone to find my name & work phone number so it can be returned - although I do write all this on the white surface of this USB stick anyway. This one feels very solid, looks great (I prefer the green 2Gb but this purple 4Gb still looks cool). Mine came with a classy clip on string loop that you can attach to stuff [but my latest 8Gb version didn't, which was a disappointment]. However the attachment point is flimsy plastic so I never use it like that - and don't expect this cheap non-metal cased drive to survive long on your key-ring anyway. Safely stored during transport, three of these 4Gb flash drives have worked for me & the kids for over a year, so it's also reliable - but naturally you can't treat it as a safe backup device for crucial files. Compared to system bus speeds, this USB2 flash is also slow, and only suitable for transferring a small number of files (say up to 100Mb per day) to and from work, although expect the 4Gb space to clog up over time. The 4Gb RAM itself should last between 12 and 50 years [about 100,000 cycles], but the mechanical USB connector is prone to failure anytime. For older USB1 equipped PCs install a Belkin 5-port USB2 PCI card (it's 40x faster and large file transfers just don't seem to like USB1) - these Belkin USB2 cards works fine with this flash drive in my two 7 year old PIII & Athlon [1GHz XP] PCs. This 4Gb traveller flash drive sits at the bottom of Kingston's range, and they designate it as `consumer' rather than 'corporate/government' quality, i.e. it's not as well built, secure or as fast as more expensive Kingston flash drives. It still comes with a 5 year warranty though. Being USB2, this flash drive is fast enough for my simple home/work file transfer needs. A single 25Mb file copies in 9 seconds, but if it's 1,000 files totalling 400Mb then expect nearer 7 minutes, and another 5 minutes to delete the folder. My new 8Gb version of this drive [a dull black/white colour] runs at over twice this speed, so check that one out as well. Over 1Gb of data I'd probably write a DVD-R/RW instead, and for regular transfer of data this size or more I'd use my bijou 60Gb external 2.5" laptop hard-drive anyway. I don't need ReadyBoost stuff for Vista - I just add 4Gb PC system RAM running at full bus speed instead [some say this RAM disk works with Vista ReadyBoost for them, some say it doesn't - but at the speed this flash drive runs, who cares]. Plus it's colourful design means its easy to spot lying about. The end cap clips on firmly, so you should only loose it when the drive is plugged into a PC (and then it will be lying somewhere nearby). I keep the drive in its original blister pack (cut off the sealed edge carefully), and jam it all in the outer pocket of my backpack - which gives extra protection from dust and shoves, plus it make the drive easy to find when ferreting about. For around a tenner this is a great product, and an almost iconic design, although the duller looking 8Gb version transfers files at twice the speed of this 4Gb one.
Essential for Teachers/students/Business Men and Women February 22, 2008 R. Mullaney (Leeds, UK) 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
This has become absolutely essential to me so that I can transfer files from my home computer (an Apple Mac) to windows PC's at the school where I teach. It is foolproof to use, just plug it into the USB port and it will appear as a removable storage device. Drag and drop whatever you need onto the massive 4GB of storage space and eject it. Simple. No more messing around burning CD's. I have none of the issues highlighted in other reviews about poor build quality and slow data transfer. It is exactly the same as my 2GB version, only greater in capacity. Kingston also offer a reassuring 5 year warranty on their flash drives. What more could you want for under a tenner?
Low end and painfully slow January 10, 2008 Ferris (Yorkshire) 9 out of 10 found this review helpful
Take my advice and pay a bit more this is entry level memory and very slow.
