Product Description The Linksys Instant Broadband EtherFast Cable/DSL Router is the perfect option to connect a small group of PCs to a high-speed Broadband Internet connection or to an Ethernet back-bone. Configurable as a DHCP server, the EtherFast Cable/DSL Router acts as the only externally recognized Internet device on your local area network (LAN). The router can also be configured to block internal users access to the Internet.Unlike a typical router which can only share 100Mbps over all its connections, the Linksys EtherFast Cable/DSL Router is equipped with a blazing 4-port EtherFast Switch, dedicating a breakneck 100Mbps to each and every connected PC. If four PCs are simultaneously accessing a standard shared-band-width router, they will only run at one-quarter the speed of any number of PCs accessing the Instant Broadband Cable/DSL Router. Not only will all of your PCs now be able to enjoy your lightning-quick Broadband Internet connection, they will also be able to share internal network data at ten times the Broadband Internet speed. Add it all together and your small network will move along faster than you ever thought possible.
Amazon.co.uk Review Linksys is fast making a name for itself in the networking world and the EtherFast Cable/DSL Instant Broadband Router is one of the reasons why. This router lets you connect a group of PCs (up to 253) to a high-speed broadband Internet connection but instead of requiring you to buy a separate hub to connect them all, Linksys made the extra effort and built the hub in. A WAN (Wide Area Network) port on the back of the router connects the Cable/DSL router, four Ethernet ports and a separate uplink port for expanding the network with an additional hub or switch. The router actually contains a four-port auto-sensing 10/100 switch. This means each port automatically detects both 10 MB and 100 MB Ethernet connections and the router allows them to coexist on the same network while it switches speeds automatically. Currently, no broadband connection even comes close to saturating a 10 MB Ethernet connection, let alone a 100 MB connection. But this router was built to accommodate a growing networking infrastructure that not only services traffic externally via the Internet but internally as well. So when one machine needs to copy over large files or play high-resolution multimedia clips across the network, the router uses the latest Ethernet technologies, which include 100 MB-per-second speeds, support for full duplex and switching technologies. It's nice to see quality and features built into a device made with future growth in mind and it's this kind of attention to detail that makes this router the perfect solution for both the home and small-office environments. Installing the EtherFast router was simple. A machine was connected to the router via Ethernet cable (make sure your machine has a network card first), plugged the router into the wall and we were up and running. During configuration a Help button is available that does an excellent job of explaining each of the settings. It also describes the kind of information it's looking for to help ease the installation nightmares of beginners. The router supports filtering to block specific internal users' Internet access. The EtherFast also has a DMZ host option that allows one PC on your LAN to be exposed to the Internet, providing unrestricted two-way communication between a machine and an Internet service. Also available on this router is support for port forwarding, which forwards requests from the Internet to specific computers equipped to handle the requests. The only problem with port forwarding is you have a limitation of 10 ports you can configure. Advanced features, such as dynamic routing and static routing, allow you to configure the routing functions to help streamline the flow of information after it passes through the router. We found the EtherFast Cable/DSL router to be simple to operate yet powerful. Everything you need to connect up to four machines to a broadband Internet connection based on cable or DSL technology is included. (Note: The router requires an external cable or DSL modem with an Ethernet interface.) --Sean Cleveland

Good, but not perfect September 19, 2008 Duke of Rouen (Surrey, UK) I have had this a week or so an I am a little frustrated with it. For the record I'm using this on NTL/Virgin with a Vista box. It's small, light and stylish. None of these are important to me. Set up was virtually unneccessary, just plugged it in and it ran first time. The only thing I did was to change the password (always recommended). All was great. Then I inserted to the CD that came with it to see what else I could do. The wizard ran and after about the fifth screen internet connection was dropped. Couldn't get it back. Tried the hardware reset on back. Didn't seem to work. Tried the software reset and that did work. Happy, or so I thought. Now every time I power up, connection is made very quickly, and is there for sufficient time to get the latest notification of updates.... Then it drops the connection. You can ping the outside address, but nothing beyond it. This happens everytime. I though it might have something to do with MAC address but apparently not. The way I overcome this is to open the web interface, choose a page at random, then without making any changes, click the 'Save Settings' button. It bursts back into life and continues to work uninterrupted for the duration. I do not want to leave the thing switched on when not in use (which might be a solution, but one I won't use). I don't seem to have any other issues with it (speed is fine, reliable so far) and so may continue using it and will do more searching to see if there is a resolution to problem (I actually want to use my computer for doing interesting things rather than hunting for solutions everytime I add a new device). Bought from Amazon, ordered Monday evening, arrived by first class post with another item Wednesday morning, so Amazon gets 5 stars again.
Poor.... September 4, 2008 Rafas-Red-Army (UK) Everything is fine untill pc/modem is rebooted, when it would not pick up internet connection, only local network. Linksys tried to blame my ISP, my PC, my Firewall.... everything except their product. 3 X 1 hours phone calls later and the technicians finally decided it was faulty and "allowed" a return back to Amazon. Don't waste your time, go for Netgear.
Need Linksys support April 24, 2008 Graham A (Thatcham, UK) I have been running this with a Linksys ADSL2MUE modem for some time with 3 PC's attached. I have encountered problems of slow network connection & locking up of the modem. To resolve the problems I have contacted the support people at Linksys either by phone or via live chat & they have provided firmware updates to cure the problems. The network & modem are currently both working fine & quick but be prepared to spend time sorting out problems!
fine for just browsing April 9, 2008 djein I bought one of these a few months ago and immediately had problems with it while it is easy to use and setup it has issues with port forwarding that cause it to drop the internal side of the network every few minutes it also drops the internal network connections when you try to use bittorrent or you are running a number of downloads at high speed this caused me no end of problems so i ended up replacing it with a dlink di-804 hv which does not have any of these issues
Failed dramtically March 11, 2008 A. D. Wilcock (UK) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Bought this less than 6 months ago, used it at home with two computers sharing the 20MB VirginMedia broadband connection and also connect the wii to the internet It worked perfectly straight out the box, then about 2 weeks ago it started dropping connections, and then basically died. Upgraded the firmware to the very latest 'internal' firmware supplied by LinkSys after chatting via their live help Connecting the computer oen by one directly to the modem proved the cables were not at fault and swapped each cable around and again proved they were working perfectly, even bought a new ethernet card for oen computer as that had connection issues in the past, still the same problem But I could connect to the routers web page perfectly, did a factory reset, everything, still no connection when the router was connected to the modem but did get a connection without the router Bought another brand name router, all problems solved, so I won't be using LinkSys again, which is a shame as its well made, easy to use and works basicaly out the box 6 months is not acceptable for something to just die, but to all purposes appear that its working perfectly
