Simple setup and faultless operation April 28, 2008 Mr. A. Walker I was able to set this printer up and within 1hr had it working across my wireless network with 3 computers. During install the software did apear to hang a couple of times but nothin that a reboot did not sort out. I am using a d-link dir-655 router with WPA encryption which is an excellent router. I bought this printer without reading online reviews, just a good one in a magazine. Glad I did not read reviews here now as I see some people had horrible problems. Fortunately I am very happy with how this has turned out.
Very good printer April 25, 2008 SJ Goldsworthy (London, UK) Reading the other reviews for this printer I am begining to worry I've actually bought a different printer! Set up was a breeze, although I attached it to our home network via an ethernet cable rather than wirelessly. I must admit I had a poor experience of a lexmark wireless bridge in the past, so the wireless functionality may well be poor, however I can only speak from my experience of it as a wired network printer. The driver/software installation took about 20 minutes on my Vista desktop and about 35 minutes on my XP Laptop. The installation software offered an option not to install the lexmark toolbar for internet explorer (which I would advise against installing, given other users experiences of compatibility issues with internet explorer). Both laptop and desktop are printing and scanning fine in great quality. One piece of advice I would give is that if the printer is connected via ethernet cable to a part wired, part wireless network and you are installing the drivers on a wireless laptop remember to select that you are connected to the printer by cable (it seemed somewhat counterintuitive to me given the laptop wasn't connected to anything). People who are struggling with the wireless set-up would do well to consider connecting the printer to their router/hubs via ethernet cable if they have a spare ethernet socket/cable available. The only reason I've given this printer 4 stars is the lack of Linux drivers/support. I have a tiny eee pc that I use mainly for web browsing and research, and it would be handy to print direct from it on occasion (which is difficult without linux drivers..).
A terrible purchase February 12, 2008 Mr. A. J. Herrett 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
What a fool I was to purchase this product. Slow, build quality appalling, poor print quality, very difficult to install. It tries to install about 200mb of rubbish on your PC, adds Lexmark to your IE toolbar causing it to intermittently crash. Wireless set up is a joke. This does not work with WPA-PSK Wireless networks (it has to be open or WPA). Drivel of the highest order. Disgusting
No good for printing with Vista - fine for copying February 11, 2008 J. Delaney 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I have a laptop running on Vista and thought this wireless printer would be great. Unfortunately, 3 months later I still cannot get it to print wirelessly or even wired through the USB. The driver disk included does not cover Vista so you have to download it from the website - but it still does not work. I rang the Lexmark helpline twice and the guy the other end (who was in India and the line kept going dead) kept trying different things over the telephone and seemed unable to help so after half an hour we decided to leave it and I would try a few more things myself. To print I now have to email my documents to my desktop and then print from that as it runs on Windows and works fine. The end result is good print quality and it is also great for doing colour copies with a multi-page feeder. When will they supply a decent Vista driver?
Bad printer January 4, 2008 Jeffrey_bowling19 3 out of 6 found this review helpful
The drivers for this printer are just like the x4550 they are not completely compatible with vista so depending on your computer and OS there could be a vast number of problems. To top it off the lexmark doesn't have a return policy so your stuck with it. I wouldn't wish this brand on my worst enemy's.
