On the face of it this product would appear to be the ideal solution to people who don't want to remember lots of passwords, however there are penalties for this freedom.
For a start, the software that is supplied with the unit *DOES NOT* work with Firefox. This is a show-stopper if you, like me, have been using it exclusively for the past few months. You can get upgraded software that supports it (and other non-MS software) from the vendor (Softex, not APC) but this upgrade is not free, in fact when I checked it was $49.99, as much as the product itself.
Secondly the resident program that monitors your activities and the webpages you visit to detect password fields is quite a resource hog. Navigating around webpages will cause your CPU load to rise sharply before tailing off a few seconds later. If you surf quite quickly you could find that the overall temperature of your CPU is raised by a few degrees. The software also appears to load the computer randomly at other times (I can only presume its hooking Windows applications looking for anything that might look like a prompt)
This load is a minor concern for most people, but it would be quite frustrating for someone looking to get the most out of their PC (e.g. an avid gamer, etc).
In terms of fingerprint recognition the hardware and associated OmniPass software is excellent. It takes up to 8 copies of as many fingers you would like to register, and once calibrated is able to authenticate the user very quickly. If you are a slow/medium typer you would definitely see the benefits of just placing your finger on the pad as opposed to typing out the password every time.
Faster typers might be a little frustrated as it can take a couple of seconds for the software to realise there is a password on the screen/webpage, and another couple of seconds to authenticate the user.
Of course, replacing typing is not primarily what this is all about - it's security. If you can live with the minor gripes, and particularly if you use Internet Explorer anyway, then this is an ideal purchase for the security conscious.
