4 out of 5 stars Used them for Uni!   August 17, 2007

Anyone who is looking for or prefer a portable, simple sound system for uni or office without the added wires and bulk, or who simply need the space, this is a perfect choice.

They look fabulous, build quality is good and the product has some weight for stabilty on a desk but also to reproduce sound accurately - which surprisingly responsive with deep bass without a separate sub!

Power, volume, bass and treble are conveniently located behind a pivoting door. Has a headphone jack for private listening, shielded for use near video monitors, as well as polished, piano-quality black finish.

2 out of 5 stars Good sound , but poor build quality...   June 26, 2007

I bought these about a year ago. I was impressed by the overall quality of the sound and the low bass frequencies these speakers could reproduce given their size. But a couple of months later I started to faintly hear some parasites when I turned the volume knob, but nothing to worry about at that time. Sadly, with time these parasites became louder and louder, and now, after about a year use, when I turn the volume knob, I hear parasites, scratches and unbalanced sound volume (left-right)and I can't exchange them... So my advice, try your luck buying these speakers, but whenever you start to hear parasites and scratches when you turn the volume knob, run to the store and exchange them...

5 out of 5 stars Great speakers   February 4, 2007

I am really pleased with these speakers. The sound quality is excellent and they look cool.

I agree with the other reviewer that they are slightly larger than usual PC speakers but I am used to that now, so don't find it a problem.

The sound quality is so good that I am now using my PC as my main hi-fi.

5 out of 5 stars Exactly what I wanted   August 23, 2006

Great speakers, great sound and aesthetically pleasing. I bought them to connect up wirelessly to play music from my computer via Apple's Airport Express and wish I'd done this earlier. Now I get great sound quality in place of my computer's tinny speakers. Very happy with the value-for-money.

4 out of 5 stars The Best 2.0 Computer Speaker Set   August 14, 2006

Unlike most PC speakers, the Altec Lansing MX5020s are aimed at those with a discerning ear for quality sound. Rather than offering high volume and overpowering base, these speakers simply aim to produce the best sound for the money. And overall they do a very good job. Bass is surprisingly powerful (due to the MAXX Bass technology), but remains rich and defined throughout, a far cry from the random thumping that can plaque cheap 2.1 speaker sets. Meanwhile, the medium and upper ranges are reproduced crisply with detail throughout. Most impressively, the treble sounds clear and luxuriant, rather than sharp and abrasive, as is often the case for computer speakers.

Physically, the speakers are larger than you'd expect, but given the polished black finish the size is easily forgivable, as they look stylish alongside any computer, visual or audio equipment. Separate controls are provided for treble and bass, as well as the usual headphone socket, which prevents fiddling around at the back of a computer when you need to switch over. There's even a handy auxiliary input that allows you to plug in a second audio device (such as an MP3 player).

Overall, if you're looking for the best quality 2.0 computer speaker set then these are it. Only the relatively high asking price prevents them from achieving the full 5 stars.
